7. InastudycarriedoutattheUniversityofArizona,theeffectsofincreasedCO2 concentration ontherateofphotosynthesisinspringwheat,Triticum aestivum,wereinvestigatedoverthecourseofanentiregrowingseason(fromthebeginningofFebruarytotheendofApril).TherateofphotosynthesiswasmeasuredastherateofCO2uptakefromthetimeofemergencefromtheseedtomaturity.ThecontrolplantsweregrownatanormalairCO2 concentrationwhilethetestplantsweregrownatanelevatedCO2concentration.

10. Thesickle-cellhemoglobinallele(HbS)hasahighfrequencyinregionswherethereismalaria.Thisisbelievedtobeduetoaselectiveadvantageagainstfatalmalariafortheheterozygote(HbAHbS).Individualswhoarehomozygousforthesicklecellallele(HbSHbS)havesicklecellanemiawhileheterozygoteshaveamuchlesssevereformofthedisease.NormalindividualswithoutsicklecellanemiaaredesignatedHbAHbA.
Thisstudyinvolved1022childrenlivinginanareaofKenyawheremalariaispresent.Thepossibleprotectiveeffectofthesicklecellalleleagainstmortalityduetomalariawasinvestigated.Thedatashowthepercentageofchildrensurvivingafterbirthoveraperiodof48months.
