One of Chrysler Corporation’s newbreed of dashing young executives was inMiami recently to address the monthlymeeting of the Southern AutomotiveMedia Association (SAMA) and he toldthe group that his company has some greatnew vehicles in the pipeline for theAmerican consumer.

Speaking to SAMA board members gath-ered for lunch in Miami Beach on the sixthfloor of the new and stunningly beautiful1111 Lincoln Road parking garage, RalphGilles — who is the president and CEO ofDodge and also serves as the vice presidentof design for Chrysler Corporation — saidtoday’s car companies are going to findthemselves locked in a “knife fight” formarket share.

“We [Chrysler] have some great things[vehicles] in store that are coming and willhelp round out our portfolio,” Gilles said.“But it’s going to be an interesting ‘knifefight’ out there because everybody’s carportfolio is going to meet head on; every-one’s going to have a small car, everyone’sgoing to have a medium car, everyone’s gota luxury brand. So the ones that win will bethe ones with the brand that actually means

something to people.”Gilles conceded that all of the U.S. com-

panies are turning out good vehicles todayand the industry has become intenselycompetitive.

“The American car companies are build-ing some really good cars right now,” hesaid. “We know internally that we are see-ing huge strides in quality. And that’sreflected at our dealers where the averagedealer is basically doing maintenance workand not warranty work; a very steep drop inwarranty claims.”

Gilles told the auto writers thatChrysler’s partnership with Italian car com-pany Fiat is progressing very well.

“It’s phenomenal,” he said. “We’re wellunderway; we’re almost two years into itnow and the transparency is incredible. Theback and forth exchange between engineersis great. We’re already doing commingleprojects.

“The Fiat 500 is being built in Mexico, engineered by Americans for this market. The engine is being built in Dundee, MI.So, it’s happening, real time!”

Gilles also said Chrysler has not been leftbehind in the development of an electric carand has one in development that will be onthe market by the end of 2012.

“Electric vehicles make sense, but thevehicle demand has to be right,” he said.“The thing about electric powertrains isthat they are very scaleable, very easy tomove around. So we’re going to use theFiat 500, it’s the perfect donor; it’s a verylow energy-demand type of vehicle and it’s

very efficient. All the work that we did thelast three years [on electric vehicle technol-ogy] is not going to waste and it will be outin less than two years. It’s well under way.”

Flanked by six new 2011 Dodge vehicles— a Charger, a Challenger, an Avenger, aCaravan, a Journey and a Durango —Gilles told SAMA members that Chryslerand Dodge have redefined their marketingstrategy after coming out of bankruptcy andare focusing on a more youthful buyer.

“The new younger buyer is somewhatunpolluted,” he said. “Their mindset hasyet to be formed. We do okay with our loy-alty in terms of our current buyers; we’rekind of growing with them, but it’s time tofish in fresh waters, basically.”

Gilles also said that auto racing fits wellwith Dodge’s marketing strategy.

“We make rear-drive, V-8 poweredvehicles and that’s what we race,” hesaid. “So we’re one of the few automak-ers that actually build what we race. Andit’s hard to ignore the reach thatNASCAR has. Eight-and-a-half-millionpeople watch every weekend, so you’vegotta be there. If you’re not, you’realmost suspiciously absent, especiallyfor a brand like ours, which is all aboutperformance.”

Dodge CEO says ‘great things’ are coming for U.S. consumers

As Research and Development manager forPollo Tropical, she creates and refines many ofthe great variety of menu items served at the 120Pollo Tropical restaurants.

“I began my adventure in the kitchen when Iwas just 10 years old, but didn’t think it waswhat I wanted to be when I grew up,” said Kleis,a resident of Key Biscayne.

Today Kleis plays an influential part in themany new, fresh menu items that Pollo Tropicaloffers customers — including such flavors as thenew handheld wraps and sandwiches like theGrilled Chicken Quesadilla Wrap and GrilledChicken Chipotle Sandwich; salads such as theShrimp Quesadilla Salad; soups, seasonal sidedishes and more.

Kleis, who works out of her office nearDadeland, is one of more than 1,500 womenemployed at Pollo Tropical.

Anative of Puerto Rico she is a mother of fourchildren. She said her path into the culinary pro-fession came as a surprise. After high schoolgraduation she moved from Puerto Rico to theUnited States to attend Brown University inRhode Island.

At Brown, Kleis majored in AppliedMathematics but changed her major to French

and International Relations.During her junior year, shetraveled to Leon, France tostudy at the Université deLeon II as an exchange stu-dent. That same year, shemet a fellow student whochanged her life.

“I cooked one night, andshe loved it,” Kleis said ofher classmate. “She suggest-ed that I intern with a chef, and I figured that since I wasin France, it was the perfectplace to give it a try.”

That summer of 1983,Kleis got an internship witha well-known chef, Georges Blanc, at his restau-rant, La Mére Blanc.

“I was so intimidated and scared to make mis-takes; it was such a male-dominated profession, and I cooked for fun but never alongside profes-sionals,” she added.

After her internship, Kleis returned to theUnited States to finish her bachelor’s degree atBrown University. By then, she had decided thatshe would strive to become a chef. She movedback to Puerto Rico to accept an internship at theCaribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan.

She missed France and in 1986 she wentback. She took a position as an intern at Chez

Pauline. She continued toapply for positions and intern-ships in various restaurants inFrance to gain more knowl-edge and skill of the culinaryprofession.

“I once applied for a joband was told that I wasn’t fit tocook in the professional worldbecause I was a woman,”Kleis said. “It was a differenttime, and women were notseen as they are now.”

Later, Kleis moved toGeneva, Switzerland to workat the five-star Hotel BeauRivage with her mentor,

Georges Blanc. She was one of two womenamong 25 chefs. She worked alongside Blancfor a year, also traveling to Puerto Rico and theSouth of France during the winters and sum-mers to act as a private chef for the owners ofChanel.

“Looking back, I was very fortunate Georgeswas my mentor,” Kleis said. “He grew up with hismother in the kitchen and accepted women in his.”

Kleis interned in two other restaurants in Francebefore moving back to Puerto Rico in 1990 andcreating one of the most prestigious off-premisecatering companies on the island.

“We catered for the Puerto Rican tourism

company, Major League Baseball, several ofthe governors’ inauguration balls and theNational Governor’s Association Convention,”she said.

In 2006, she developed a restaurant concept— Urban Cuisine — a fast casual restaurant thatemphasized quality and freshness at affordableprices. Within six months of opening, the restau-rant was chosen among Puerto Rico’s top 20favorite restaurants in a public survey by a localnewspaper.

Two years later, Kleis and her husband decid-ed to move to Miami. While here, she appearedin various cooking segments for DespiertaAmerica before she was hired by PolloTropical.

“At that point in my career, I wanted a job thatgave me a balanced life and put the skills I have togood use. Pollo Tropical has given me that opportu-nity,” Kleis said. “I am very fortunate to have founda home here, in their kitchens.”

Today, when she’s not creating recipes andnew flavors for Pollo Tropical, Kleis spendstime with her husband and four daughters. Shealso is writing a book about her experiences inthe culinary profession.

“I think it’s important that a woman chooses acareer she loves whether or not it’s considered aman’s profession. You have to pursue what youlove because that’s how you are really going todo your best,” Kleis added.

Baynanza was created in 1982 in an effortby Miami-Dade County to save BiscayneBay. To date, it’s the largest event of its kindin South Florida.

The program was created whenlocal community leaders andDERM (Department ofEnvironmental ResourcesManagement) staff joinedforces to raise awarenessabout the dire conditionsof one of our mostimportant naturalresources, BiscayneBay. At the time, thebay was being threat-ened by the directimpact of pollutionfrom sewage runoff, marine debris, and othercontaminants.

The main idea for thecreation of Baynanza was toget the community involvedin the efforts to bring BiscayneBay back to life. Twenty-nineyears later, the Baynanza BiscayneBay Cleanup Day has become synony-mous with Baynanza.

On this day, thousands of volunteers goout to dozens of locations throughoutMiami-Dade County to pick up tons of trashfrom the shorelines and nearby islands of thebay. But Baynanza is more than just a one-day event. This internationally known pro-gram is comprised of more than 35 greatenvironmental events organized by severallocal agencies and sponsors.

Baynanza runs from March to April everyyear, giving the community an array of edu-cational events from which to choose.

This year, Miami-Dade County will mark

the 29th anniversary of Baynanza and theBiscayne Bay Cleanup Day, which will becelebrated on Apr. 16. There are 31 cleanupsites from which to choose. At five of the 31locations, dozens of local boat owners willtake hundreds of volunteers to clean more

than 15 nearby islands in BiscayneBay. Our goal this year is to sur-

pass the record of more than 40tons of trash collected during

the 2010 Cleanup Day.Beyond the actual

cleanup of this vital natu-ral resource, Baynanzahelps our communityunderstand the enor-mous impact of pollu-tion and the conse-quences of littering. The Biscayne BayCleanup Day helps toeducate people of all

ages and promotes anenvironmentally friendly

message to protect thebeautiful Biscayne Bay for

today and for the generationsto come.If you would like to be part of

this event, you can register online at<www.miamidade.gov/derm> or call 305-372-6784.

Miami’s Brickell Financial District is

experiencing a sharp climb in the number

of residents and businesses that call the

area home, and the district’s newest hotel

property is prepared to deliver 10,000

square feet of new retail/restaurant space to

the market.

The under-construction Hampton Inn &

Suites Miami Brickell-Downtown, set to

open this fall at 50 SW 12 St., offers retail-

ers and restaurant operators an opportunity

to capitalize on rising population growth in

the surrounding neighborhood, an influx of

commercial activity throughout Downtown

Miami, and the steady flow of visitors who

will occupy the Hampton Inn & Suites’ 221

guest rooms and 3,500 square feet of meet-

ing space.

The 10,000-square-foot street level

space, accessible from SW 12th Street, is

the largest contiguous block of restaurant

product now available in the Brickell

Financial District. The storefront space can

be divided for multiple users and offers

ample on-site parking, making it ideal for

restaurant operators ranging in size from

2,000 to 8,000 square feet.

Hospitality Operations Inc., the Miami-

based developer of the new Hampton Inn

& Suites, has engaged Kerry Newman of

the brokerage firm Koniver Stern Group to

spearhead the leasing of the space.

“The Hampton Inn & Suites Miami

Brickell-Downtown will be the newest

mid-range lodging option in a Downtown

Miami market that is enjoying heightened

popularity as an international destination

for visitors and businesspeople,” said

Bernard Wolfson, president of Miami-

based Hospitality Operations Inc., the pro-

ject’s developer.

“This dynamic, coupled with the hotel’s

mid-market appeal and the Brickell area’s

emergence as a hotbed of residential and

commercial growth, means our street-level

storefronts offer big business opportunity

for restaurateurs seeking a presence in the

area.”

The delivery of another 10,000 square

feet of retail/restaurant space in Downtown

Miami comes just as the area welcomes a

flurry of new retail and restaurant openings

as operators tap into dramatic residential

growth that has seen the area’s population

nearly double in the past decade.

Since 2009, Downtown Miami has wel-

comed a total of 76 new shops and restau-

rants just as residential occupancy in the

district’s high-rises has risen from 62 per-

ent to 85 percent, according to a recent

study by the Miami Downtown

Development Authority.

Property features include a 210-space

parking garage offering convenient and

affordable parking for restaurant patrons,

the availability of monument signage

fronting SW 12th Street, and close proxim-

ity to public transit options, including

Metrorail and Metromover. The hotel will

feature a modern, upscale interior design

reminiscent of a high-end property.

Construction of the 15-story Hampton

Inn & Suites Miami Brickell-Downtown

began in mid-2010 and topped-off in early

2011. The project, which is LEED-regis-

tered, will include a number of sustainable

features, including a 35,000-gallon cistern

to collect rainwater for irrigation purposes,

low-flow water fixtures, and an Ozone

laundry system designed to reduce the con-

sumption of water, energy and chemicals.

John Moriarty & Associates of Florida is

general contractor.

I like the 2011 Subaru Forester. It’s acompact SUV competing in the same classwith the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 andothers. It’s stable and rugged in off-roadtraveling and it has an excellent all-wheel-drive system that eases the going in tougherdriving situations.

The Forester’s all-wheel-drive system isstandard and it really does give the vehicleexcellent traction and handling in badweather, and it’s well equipped with safetyfeatures. Forester was named a Top SafetyPick by the Insurance Institute for HighwaySafety after getting a five-star rating in allgovernment crash tests and a four-star rat-ing for rollover resistance.

Forester was introduced as an all-newmodel in 2009 after being redesigned togive it a wider track, a longer wheelbase, adouble wishbone rear suspension, morecargo space and more rear-seat legroom.

It’s classified as a “crossover” vehicle, onewith a car-based chassis that has beendesigned to deliver good handling and goodfuel economy. The Forester is slightlylonger than Honda’s CR-V and a littleshorter than Toyota’s RAV4.

The Forester XT has a distinctive func-tional hood scoop, five-spoke 17-inch alloywheels, a chrome-tipped dual exhaust and aspoiler that juts over the rear window.

On the inside, the cabin is nicelydesigned and the seats are comfortable, while driver visibility is excellent from allangles. The center stack has faux aluminumtrim and holds the climate and audio con-trols. The center console is deep and slidesforward four inches to provide an armrest.

The rear seats are split 60/40 and foldflat to yield a huge 68.3-cubic-foot cargoarea (33.5 cubic feet with the rear seatup). The rear seat also reclines and there’sa retractable center tray with fixed cupholders.

For 2011, there’s a long list of improve-ments, including an all-new engine for thebase 2.5X models (the 2.5XT keeps thesame turbocharged 224 hp twin camengine). The new engine has a slightlylonger stroke and a slightly larger displace-ment, and a chain-driven double overhead

Miami to join cities portrayed by French painter Alain GordonBY YAFFA MIZRACHI

Paris, New York, Amsterdam, LeTouquet Paris-Plage and now this April,Miami will join the prestigious list of inter-national cities portrayed by French painterand sculptor Alain Godon.

A visual narrator and master of color,Godon’s paintings capture the essence of acity — its people, culture, monuments, andarchitecture — and his playful imaginationinfuses his work with expressive lines andrich vivid colors. Introducing the collectionas Miami’s premier architectural landmark isthe New World Symphony’s new campus,New World Center designed by PritzkerPrize-winning architect Frank Gehry.

Bernard Markowicz, U.S. agent forGodon, will debut the complete original oil-on-canvas collection of artwork depictingthe sites and spirit of the Magic City duringa feature exhibition on view starting Apr. 2at Markowicz Fine Art gallery, located inthe Miami Design District.

While touring Greater Miami withMarkowicz in 2009, Godon fell in love withthe area and characterizing architecturefound in its esteemed performing arts the-aters, remarkable historic landmarks, and

modern art deco structures.Last April, Godon released two oil-on-can-

vas paintings of South Beach art deco archi-tecture of the 1930s with pieces that includeThe Colony Hotel and The Hotel Marseilles, named Les Alumettes and Vacances aMarseilles, respectively. This year, Godonwill add some eight to 12 new original oil-on-canvas pieces to the collection.

“The moment I arrived in Miami, I wasimmediately drawn to the colorful energyof the city and distinct beauty apparent inthe architectural landscape and culture of itspeople,” Godon said. “During my stay, Ispent my time immersing myself into thelifestyle while visiting many of the area’smost spectacular sites, of which I took hun-dreds of photos.

“My inspiration for the Miami collectionwas love at first sight and I am overwhelmedwith excitement to continue to tell my storyvisually by bringing to life the magic of thecity, portrayed on canvas,” he added.

Godon began his architecture series fiveyears ago, at which point, his collectionsattracted more and more collectors whowere intrigued by the originality of his styleand unique technique.

Picking up every characterizing detail

that embodies an architectural structure,Godon has a very unusual method of look-ing at a building that is skillfully portrayedwithin the art piece. Each painting capturesseveral structural points of view influencedby the building’s many angles, which are allplaced on the face of the image to exposethe landmark design elements upfront, expanding the architectural integrity.

“Miami is an international epicenter thatprovides a wonderful opportunity for AlainGodon to present his work to people fromall over the world,” Markowicz said. “Hisoriginal style and masterful use of colorwithin his paintings and classical brillianceas a sculptor, has brought Alain great suc-cess and built him a reputation throughoutEurope as a sought-after artist.”

Markowicz Fine Art is located in theMiami Design District, 1 NE 40 St. No. 5,Miami, FL 33137. Gallery hours areMonday-Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., andSaturday, noon to 5 p.m. For more informa-tion, call 786-362-5546 or visit online at<www.markowiczfineart.com>.

A national study of civic engagement

by people in major cities shows

Miamians currently are among the least

to be involved in their community. The

Miami Foundation hopes to use this

report as a catalyst to bring civic leaders

together and start a positive dialogue on

ways to increase Miamians’ community

involvement.

The report, titled A Tale of Two Cities:

Civic Health in Miami and Minneapolis-

St. Paul, was unveiled recently to Miami

community leaders convened by The

Miami Foundation. It examines commu-

nities’ civic health and measures indica-

tors such as volunteering, community

engagement, voter turnout and one-on-

one interactions with neighbors.

“The findings in this study are critical

in learning how to improve our communi-

ty,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president of

The Miami Foundation. “Part of our mis-

sion as a foundation is to make people

aware of these issues and start the discus-

sion that will lead to getting citizens

involved.”

Soto hopes that Miami’s leaders will

use the report’s conclusions as a starting

point, a positive first step.

AMONG THE STUDY’S FINDINGS:Education in Minnesota appears to be

more “civic.” Minneapolis-St. Paul

schools collaborate more with other com-

munity-based educative institutions and

engage adult citizens in ways that build

their satisfaction and trust. Minneapolis-

St. Paul institutions do a better job of

teaching civic knowledge.

Minneapolis-St. Paul residents appear

to have stronger social networks than

residents of Miami. More of them have

meals with other members of their

households (92 percent vs. 84 percen),

use the Internet to connect with family

and friends (64 percent vs. 55 percent)

and talk to neighbors (51 percent vs. 45

percent).

Levels of trust and satisfaction are

much higher in the Minneapolis-St. Paul

area than in the Miami area. Forty-two

percent of St. Paul citizens generally trust

the local government, compared with just

24 percent of Miamians. Thirty-two per-

cent of St. Paul citizens feel the leaders of

their community represent their interests,

compared with just 18 percent of

Miamians.

Minneapolis-St. Paul residents are

more than twice as likely to volunteer

than Miami residents (37 percent vs. 15

percent), and 45 percent of Minneapolis-

St. Paul residents had participated in at

least one community group vs. 22 percent

of Miami residents. This may be due to

the fact that non-profits, which are an

important resource for civic engagement,

are much more extensive and better

resourced in the Minneapolis-St. Paul

than Miami.

“I encourage our community’s leaders

to take the time and analyze this informa-

tion so it can be put to positive use,” said

Penny Shaffer, BlueCross BlueShield of

Florida’s market president, who is on the

Miami Foundation’s board of trustees.

“Miami is a unique, vibrant city with a

constantly changing population. Civic

leaders need to find ways to get others

involved in and excited about improving

the overall health of the community in

which they live. I have lived all over the

United States and the world and believe

Miamians do care very much about this

wonderful city.”

A Tale of Two Cities: Civic

Engagement in Miami and Minneapolis-

St. Paul is the result of collaboration

among four partners: National

Conference on Citizenship, Florida Joint

Center for Citizenship, and Center for

Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg

College in Minneapolis.

The Florida Joint Center for

Citizenship is a partnership between the

Lou Frey Institute at the University of

Central Florida and the Bob Graham

Center at the University of Florida.

Assistance was provided by CIRCLE

(Center for Information and Research on

Civic Learning and Engagement) at Tufts

University.

Established in 1967, The Miami

Foundation, formerly the Dade

Community Foundation, has helped hun-

dreds of people create personal, perma-

nent and powerful legacies by establish-

ing custom, charitable funds. More infor-

mation can be found at <www.miami-

Hailed by critics around the globe,

conductor-pianist Ramon Tebar will

take on the roll as Florida Grand

Opera’s (FGO) new music director start-

ing June 1, becoming the first Spanish

conductor to lead a major American

opera company.

It took two years for FGO to careful-

ly fill the position and Tebar aims to

not only meet but surpass the high

expectations.

“I am honored to have been appointed

music director, getting the opportunity

to be part of Miami’s cultural renais-

sance and its impact on the South

Florida community,” Tebar said.

Tebar has worked with FGO in the

past, conducting Lucia di Lammermoor

in 2009. The production was highly

acclaimed by audiences and critics

alike, which led to his return to FGO in

November 2010 to work his magic on

Turandot. His work earned him FGO’s

2010 Henry C. Clark Conductor of the

Year Award.

“We are proud to welcome such a

blossoming talent as Ramon Tebar to

Florida Grand Opera,” said Bob Heuer,

FGO general director and CEO. “His

background, youthful energy and

diverse experience in symphonic and

operatic repertoire make the ideal match

for our organization and we look for-

ward to seeing what we can accomplish

together.”

Tebar’s artistry and finesse has graced

other companies throughout the country,

including the Cincinnati Opera, Atlanta

Symphony and Naples Symphony

Orchestra.

Leaving Spain in 2005, Tebar accept-

ed an assistant conductor position with

Palm Beach Opera. There, driven by his

passion and ambition, he participated in

more than 20 productions including

Madame Butterfly, La Boheme and

Italiana in Algeri.

Tebar’s brilliance was detected at an

early age when his parents bought him

an electronic keyboard at the age of 5,

and by 7 he was enrolled in Valencia’s

music conservatory. His gifted and

skillful competence was quickly recog-

nized. At the age of 15 Tebar was put to

work as an assistant conductor and

accompanying pianist.

Graduating with honors from the

Joaquin Rodrigo Music Conservatory

(Conservatorio Superior de Música

Joaquin Rodrigo) in Valencia, Tebar

received a Special Honor Award in

Piano and vhamber music degrees along

with numerous other acknowledgments.

As FGO’s music director Tebar will

be responsible for protecting the musi-

cal integrity and performance level of

the orchestra, chorus and singers as well

as providing his own artistic vision.

“For me, it was love at first sight,”

Tebar said, recalling his experience with

FGO. “I am very thankful to Bob Heuer

and the board, knowing this will be a

very exciting journey for both FGO and

me.”

Tebar will simultaneously serve as

music director for FGO and Palm Beach

Symphony, in addition to touring the

world for a series of concerts and

appearances. He resides in Palm Beach

with his wife and newborn daughter.
