The Miami-Dade County Youth Fair andExpo recently announced the 75 recipientsof its annual college scholarship program.The awards were presented during a dinnerceremony on Apr. 25 at the R. Ray GoodeBuilding on The Youth Fair fairgrounds atTamiami Park.
The $1,000 college scholarships wereawarded to 51 public, private, charter andhome school high school students, fiveadult vocational students, and three alter-native education students. The Youth Fairdistributed the scholarships to 10 highschool seniors who will study for a careerin agriculture. Six theater and productionstudents attending Florida InternationalUniversity who volunteer their time andtalent in support of the Youth Fair’s per-forming arts divisions also received thescholarships.
To date, the Youth Fair has awardedmore than $10 million to help Miami-Dade County students achieve higher edu-cation goals. In addition, the Youth Fair isthe only venue where students can show-case their educational, art and scienceachievements all in one place and berewarded for their efforts.
More than 45,000 student projects wereexhibited to more than half a million fam-ilies, friends and fairgoers during theYouth Fair’s 18-day run in March.

In 2001, Sharpton was appointed by thenFlorida Gov. Jeb Bush to the Miami-DadeExpressway Authority (MDX) andMetropolitan Planning Organization andserved on those boards for six years.During his tenure at MDX, he was electedchair of the board in 2003 and served fourconsecutive terms as chair through 2007.

The opera season may be over, but stu-dents have been reaping the benefits of thistimeless art form thanks to Florida GrandOpera’s (FGO) educational programs,which bring opera into the classroom.
On May 22, the opera company’s head ofcostuming, Camilla Haith, visitedRichmond Heights Middle School to givestudents a first-hand account of how aca-demic subjects play a daily part in makinggarments for the stage.
“The thing I want to talk to you guysabout today is that, even though my educa-tion is extensive, most of the things that Iuse in my job I learned in grade school andhigh school,” Haith said.
With two bachelor’s degrees and a mas-ter’s degree, Haith assured students thattheir present studies lay an important foun-dation for their future and discussed threebasic subjects — history, math and art.
With costumes from the company’s latestproduction of Verdi’s La traviata adorningthe stage behind her, Haith began explain-ing the importance of historical context intheater.
“Creating an opera means creating a
world. When you decide what the parame-ters of that world are going to be, theneveryone on stage must exist inside that
design,” she said.When delving into the topic of fashion
history, students were often surprised by
what trends dictated in the 1800s. Theygasped at the thought of shorts and tankstops being considered indecent attire andlaughed at the revelation that men regular-ly wore corsets.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winningarchitects Herzog & de Meuron, PAMMwill offer 200,000 square feet of program-mable space, including 120,000 square feetof interior space — more than three timesthat of the museum’s current facility. It alsowill include approximately 80,000 squarefeet of exterior program space for the dis-play of works of art, educational activities,relaxation and dining. Located alongsideBiscayne Bay in downtown Miami’sMuseum Park, the museum is scheduled toopen in December.
Jones Lang LaSalle vice president JayLeone will oversee the property manage-ment of PAMM and optimize its spaceuse. His team will be responsible for afull-service platform that includes: engi-neering and operations, energy and sus-tainability initiatives, project manage-ment, landscaping, security, sourcing and

Miami Seaquarium will thrill guests withits new summer show “Sky Riders” featur-ing daring motorcycle high wire and acro-batic stunts. The show starts with aninclined motorcycle high wire act, 40 feetoff the ground. Acrobats run the motorcy-cle up and down the incline wires they per-form stunts atop the motorcycle while bal-ancing it on the cable.

Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) isthe first hospital in the country to launcha smartphone app for Apple iOS devicesthat uses Wi-Fi triangulation technologyto offer patients the convenience of anon-campus indoor GPS-like way-findingsystem, along with other serviceenhancements.
Through the Fit4KidsCare app, familiesnow can connect to MCH’s interactiveway-finding campus maps, purchase itemsfrom the MCH gift shop, order room serv-ice and much more.
The app originally was launched in2010, initially providing families withER and Urgent Care wait times, direc-tions to the main hospital and its nineoutpatient center locations as well asphysician directories.
In 2013, the hospital updated its appusing mobile-software companyMeridian’s software development kits fornavigation and indoor positioning.Additionally, the hospital also used Cisco’s802.11n Wi-Fi network and the MobilityServices Engine for computing locationinformation in real time from hundreds ofWi-Fi access points, exposing them cen-trally to third party software platforms likeMeridian.
“Miami Children’s Hospital is commit-ted to optimizing the patient and family
experience,” said Ed Martinez, chief infor-mation officer. “The new app is one ofmany tools for supporting families in navi-gating the campus. It supplements a color-ful, child-friendly interior way-finding sys-tem that uses colors and animal images asvisual cues as well as staff commitment toproactive way-finding support.
“In our increasingly technically connect-ed world, the new app adds a new dimen-sion to the process,” he said.
Once downloaded, the app’s new, indoor,way-finding feature provides smartphoneusers with an internal view of the main hos-pital’s layout. Using indoor positioning, itlocates the users on the smart phone andprovides step-by-step directions to anydesired location within the hospital, similarto a GPS guidance system. The technologyis an enhancement to MCH’s dedication toexcellence in customer service.
The application offers inpatients andtheir families the ability to order roomservice from the hospital cafeteria andorder gift shop items straight from a mobiledevice. Families and friends also can sendgifts or cards to patients admitted to thehospital by downloading the app.

It’s that time of yearagain — school’s out, nomore homework andchildren have lots of freetime to have fun.
But during summer,with the constant outdoorplay — including water
activities and, of course, the hot weather —parents should be extra cautious about thehazards to their children’s safety.
Here are some important safety tips thatcan help keep your children out of danger,and out of the emergency room.
WATER SAFETY• Never leave a child alone in the water
or near the water — not even for a minuteto answer the telephone or check the stove.
• Children should swim only withadult supervision, even if they are goodswimmers.
• Floatation devices and inflatable toysare just that — TOYS. They do not replaceadult supervision in the swimming pool, akiddie pool or a bathtub. It only takes sec-onds for a child to drown.
• If you have a backyard pool or liveon the water, you need to have layers ofprotection to protect your children. Theseinclude: window or door locks/alarms,self-latching pool fencing, a Shepherd’sHook or rescue ring should be available,and have a telephone nearby. Post emer-gency numbers and your address by atelephone.
• No diving into the water — always goin feet first to protect the head and neck.
• Select swimming sites that have life-guards available. Never swim in unguard-ed lakes or canals because there may bemany dangers lurking just beneath thewater’s surface. Unseen rip currents in theocean take too many lives.
• Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR). Due to the time it may take forparamedics to arrive, CPR skills can makethe difference between life and death.
• If you see someone in trouble in thewater, remember “Throw! Don’t Go.” Donot jump in any body of water to rescuesomeone because they may pull you under.Throw them a rope or rescue ring.
BIKE SAFETY• Always wear a helmet when bike rid-
ing. It can prevent head injuries and evendeath from a bicycle accident. Helmetsand other safety gear also should be wornwhen skateboarding, skating, riding scoot-ers and ATVs.
• Stay in control, be predictable, allowonly one person at a time on a bike. Notowing!
• Watch out for hazards such as loosegravel, potholes, broken glass and straydogs.
• Make sure your children wear brightcolors when biking. Teach them that justbecause they see the driver, that does notmean the driver sees them.
• Observe all signs, traffic lights, andstreet and sidewalk markings; ride sin-gle file, and use a steady front whitelight, a steady red rear light as well asreflectors when riding after dark.
SUN PROTECTION• The sun is strongest between 11 a.m.
and 3 p.m., so try to keep your children outof direct sunlight during this time of day.
• Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 orhigher to all children over 6 months oldand reapply it every two hours, or more ifswimming. Use sunscreen even whenyou’re in the shade.
• Children should drink plenty of fluids;they are susceptible to heat exhaustion anddehydration.
BUG BITE SAFETY• Keep your children safe from bug bites
by applying safe and effective insect repel-lents. Apply those with DEET, citronellaand soybean oil to the outside of clothingand exposed skin.
• Never apply the repellent directly to achild’s hands and face. Rub it into theirnecks and ears, staying away from theirmouth and ears.
• Dusk and dawn are the worst times forbugs, so stay indoors during these times orwear long-sleeved shirts and pants.

The first call for the TP7 Service startedrecently at PortMiami with the arrival of theMaersk Kristina, a 6,700 TEU (20-foot equiv-alent unit) cargo vessel. The service’s lineupwill include additional cargo vessels with acapacity of 8,700 TEUs. The South FloridaContainer Terminal Miami will handle thenew service at the PortMiami cargo yard.
The new weekly TP7 Service atPortMiami offers more competitive transittimes from Southeast Asia to the East Coastof the United States. PortMiami will be theonly direct service to Yantian, China, andKaohsiung, Taiwan in the market today.
Savannah-Charleston-Miami.“We are pleased to welcome what is now
the largest regular container service to call atPortMiami,” said Miami-Dade Mayor CarlosGimenez. “The new service is a majorenhancement to the port’s cargo offerings.”
PortMiami director Bill Johnson said heexpects that the new service is the first ofwhat will be increasingly larger cargo vesselsoperating from the Port.

The Joe Warner award honorsAHCA/NCAL members who have workeddiligently to educate members of Congressabout the needs of longterm care patientsand residents, and who have worked toadvance quality care in the long term andpost-acute care community.
Kelley Rice-Schild is executive directorof Floridean Healthcare, which operates theoldest nursing home (The Floridean) inMiami. She also is owner/partner in PartnerCare Pharmacy in South Florida. Rice-Schild comes from a background oflongterm care, growing up in the family-owned facility that was established by hergrandparents. She began working inFloridean’s activities department at the ageof 18, and today continues the tradition ofexcellent service, leadership and responsi-bility to the community.
Her grandfather, Jack Rice, also foundedFlorida Health Care Association (FHCA), thestate’s first and largest advocacy organizationfor longterm care providers.
Rice-Schild is a past FHCA president andhas received numerous awards for her serviceto the longterm care profession, includingFHCA’s highest honor, the Walter M. JohnsonCircle of Excellence Award, as well as NursingHome Administratorof the Year and the ArthurH. Harris Government Services Award.
Throughout her 20-plus years of serviceto longterm care, Rice-Schild has been along-standing advocate for providers andthe residents under their care. She hashelped to educate numerous federal andstate legislators about the profession, mak-ing regular trips to Washington, DC andTallahassee to testify before members ofCongress and the Florida Legislature on keylongterm care issues. She also has hostednumerous facility tours, press conferences,petition signings and other events that pro-mote the important link between adequatefunding and high-quality care.
She is a member of the American College ofHealth Care Administrators and the AmericanSociety on Aging and is actively involved in theAmerican Health Care Association, serving aschair of the Independent Owners Committeeand past chair of the Political InvolvementCommittee.
Kelley Rice-Schildcurrently resides in CoralGables and is married with three children.

The second grade students at the GordonDay School at Beth David Congregationhosted their annual Culture Fair on June 6during which each student learned about adifferent country, including its geography,culture, customs, economy and politicalstructure.
Students prepared booklets and displaysabout their countries, and the project cul-minated with a special day during whichthe children brought homemade foods andhandmade artistic creations from theircountry for the class families to enjoy. Theschool cafeteria was transformed into aWorld’s Fair of culinary delights! One stu-
dent even brought friends from Haiti (herassigned country) to celebrate.
The Gordon Day School is a Jewish ele-mentary school for children in grades K-5.It is a division of the Gordon Schools ofBeth David Congregation, which alsoencompass an Early Childhood Center,Religious School, and the Tikvah Center,the only autism-specific program within aJewish day school in Florida. Of course,it also made them feel like celebrities.

Kat Hurley-Bolinder spent her entirecareer traveling the world as a Delta Airlinesstewardess. She didn’t start exercising, how-ever, until she moved down to Miami withher husband in 1974.
It all started with a friendly wager.“I was bragging to the guy across the street
about the fact that I had lost some weight,”Kat said.
He said, “You think you’re in good shape?I bet that you can’t run around the block.”
Kat then replied, “Put your money whereyour mouth is.”
About halfway through the half-mile runshe realized that she was in pretty horribleshape, but she finished the run nonetheless.
Finally, she got back to her place, floppedinto a chair and said, “See, I told you I coulddo it.”
He then replied, “Yeah, but look at you”and she sighed, “Yeah, this is terrible!”
So, for the next few months, Kat traineduntil she was able to run four miles.
At that time she was flying San Franciscotrips for Delta and always had wanted towalk across the Golden Gate Bridge intoSausalito. But now with her newfound skillshe decided to run across the bridge.
“When I got out there and I got to the end
of the bridge, I was so exhilarated about run-ning my first time across the Golden GateBridge that I continued jogging intoSausalito even though it was farther than Ihad ever run before,” she said. “This was thefirst time that I had ever felt the ‘runner’shigh.’”
As a stewardess, Kat was able to travelaround the world and would use running asa way to take in the cities to which shetraveled.
“About every place Delta flies: France,England, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, Japan— every international destination — I wouldrun.” Kat said. “When I had a layover, Iwould run around a river, or in the woods, orthrough the city. Wherever I could.”
In 1976, Kat joined the Delta AirlinesRoad Running Club, where she would run arace in a different U.S. city every month andcompete in the World Airline Road Raceevery year. The World Airline Road Race isan international running competition held ina different country every year and sponsoredby different airlines from around the world.Through the World Airline Road Race, Katran in competitions in Australia, Finland,England and Spain.
Kat ran her first marathon in St. Georges,UT in 1994. She finished the race just 28 sec-onds under four hours, which qualified her
for the Boston Marathon. She said of heraccomplishment, ”For women over 50, thedeadline was under four hours. So I made it,which was pretty cool. But I said, ‘Oh crap,
that means I gotta run another one of thesedarn things!’ They’re not easy. They’re hard.Really hard!”
Throughout her life, Kat has run in twomarathons, two half marathons, tons of 5Ks,10Ks, and running competitions, and has runin countries on six continents.
Kat is now 71 years old and is retired fromDelta Airlines. This, however, has notstopped her from running. She spends fourdays a week running with a group of womenin a boot camp at Miami-Dade College, doesOrange Theory, and competes in long-dis-tance races. This past year Kat has run in twomud runs, a foam fest, and the ING HalfMarathon.
“In my age group, I always win.” Kat said.“A lot of times I’m the only one in my agegroup running in the event. But I do beatpeople in the 65-69 and 60-64 age groupsand a heck of a lot of other people too. I usedto run in the middle of the pack, but now I’ma little behind the middle.
“I’m still beating all of those peoplebehind me, though. That’s pretty amazingwhen you think about it. And I think, ‘Oh my,I just outran a 25-year-old kid.’ How aboutthat!”
Kat will be running in the EurasiaMarathon in Istanbul, Turkey next year andhas no plan of stopping any time soon.

The Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabrioletclaimed the overall Best Convertible auto-mobile title on June 6 at the third annual“Topless in Miami” event hosted by theSouthern Automotive Media Association(SAMA), headquartered at the elegant Ritz-Carleton Hotel in Key Biscayne.
The Porsche Carrera was contested close-ly in the category by the beautiful JaguarXKR. However, the Jaguar XKR went on towin the title of Best Exotic Convertible in thevoting by 72 SAMA members who droveand graded the 17 participating vehicles ondesign, ease of convertible operation, andoverall driving and handling characteristics.
“We’re really pleased with how the manu-facturers supported this event and how ourmembers have responded,” said PaulBorden, SAMA board member and eventcoordinator. “This was our third year and itreally was the best yet, with 14 auto manu-facturers entering 17 convertibles in theevent. And we had a great turnout by ourmembers; more than 70 of them signed inand drove and graded the cars.”
It was the second year in a row that thesleek Jaguar XKR has won a trophy in the“Topless in Miami” competition. ThePorsche Carrera and Mercedes Benz SLSAMG GT Roadster were the two otherentrants in the Exotic Convertible category.
At the same time, the BMW M3Convertible won the trophy in the 2013 BestLuxury Convertible class. It was challengedclosely by the Audi A5, the Infiniti G37 IPLand the Mercedes Benz E-Class convertibles.
In the Full-Size Convertible Class, the Chrysler200 Limited won top honors. It was closely fol-lowed in the balloting by the BMW 135is and theJeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4x4.
