Pancake Fundraiser

Bishop Flaget will host its

first Pancake Breakfast on Sunday,

May 22nd at the Church of the

Ascension on Lynbrooke Rd from 9:00

a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The current plan is to hold

these once every two or three months,

rotating churches that our Council

coverts. The food and drinks will be

served free of charge. Donations will

be accepted.

Please support us by

volunteering to help serve the

breakfast or by brining your family to

breakfast! Haven’t you been wanting

to see what Ascension looks like and

hear Fr. Padgett preach for some time

know?

Call Dale Anderson at 493-

1065 if you would like to volunteer

your time.

Dear Brothers,

I cannot believe that al-

most two years has passed since

my election to the position of

Grand Knight of Bishop Flaget

Council. Reflecting back on

these two years, or even the last

3-1/2 years of our Council’s exis-

tence, and I really have come to

appreciate and respect those

men that accept the responsibil-

ity of leading a Knights of Co-

lumbus Council, especially one

like our own that serves multi-

ple parishes.

The Nominating Com-

mittee, comprised of Trustees

Joe Wise Jr., Matt Sanderfer,

Chuck Durbin and myself, had

the responsibility of developing

a slate of office candidates con-

sidering what kind of knowledge

and skills are required to suc-

cessfully lead and operate our

council. We put together what

we believe is a strong slate of

candidates for the 2005-2006

fraternal year. See the facing

page for the complete slate.

While we recommend

that you vote in their favor, we

know that a committee can

never consider all of the vari-

ables. So, if you or another

Brother you know has interest

in running for any of the elected

positions, please feel free to

nominate yourself or that other

Brother at the June Meeting.

Your nomination will be respect-

fully heard and the words of the

nominees prayerfully considered

prior to voting.

Most importantly, please

be there to vote! Your voice is

vitally important to the council

and it should be heard. I look

forward to seeing you at on June

7th.

God bless,

Tom Blocher, GK

Special Olympics of Kentucky

The message below is from Kelly Hutchinson who is with Spe-

cial Olympics of Kentucky. As you are aware of my effort to form

a team of Knights from the 9 Louisville Councils, the message is

a result of a phone call to Kelly last Friday.

She asked if the Knights would be involved with the Spring

Games by providing 20-25 volunteers from 8:30 - 3:30 Saturday

May 14th. She would like the Knights to be the team that would

oversee one of the competitions such as the Softball Throw.

They will train our volunteers that morning (rules and the way

they the game is to be run). This is not a hard or labor-some

task, Kelly promised we would have a GREAT time and the

experience would be very gratifying!

At the Metro Roundtable meeting Saturday we discussed

Knights from all councils joining in on this effort and we

agreed that all Councils being involved was good for the Knights

as well as SOKY, and felt we should easily be able to get the 20-

25 volunteers. If we have more, that is not a problem, we could

also be escorts for the athletes going from event to event. As you

see there are a lot of opportunities. She also mentioned if there

were a few guys that could only volunteer 3-4 hrs, they may be

able to serve lunches to the athletes.

I know the time is short, let me know how many volunteers you

can add to the effort. Contact me at my home 493-1065 or cell

802-6551 ASAP!

What Happens to Them if You

Can’t Care for Yourself?

Raising a family is costly. For many of us,

there’s not much left over for long-term

goals...such as saving for our children’s

education or for retirement. Ideally, car-

ing for a sick parent wouldn’t have to be

part of the equation. Yet, as with many

things in life, the reality can be quite dif-

ferent. Today, many people start families

in their 30s and 40s - while their parents

live well into their 70s, 80s, and 90s.

If one day you require skilled nursing

care, you might have to ask your children

for help - just when they’re ready to send

their own children off to college. This is,

in fact, a common dilemma among mid-

dle-aged people today. Experts have even

coined a term -“the sandwich generation”

– to describe those who are squeezed be-

tween the conflicting financial obligations

of caring for both parents and children.

Knights of Columbus Care - a long-term

care insurance plan - is the newest addition

to the Order’s portfolio of insurance prod-

ucts. It is available to members and their

spouses ages 40 through 85 in the United

States (35 through 80 in Canada), subject

to underwriting requirements. You have a

choice of nursing-home-only coverage, or

comprehensive coverage - which also cov-

ers at-home and hospice care.

In addition, you choose your daily benefit

amount, benefit duration, and elimination

period. This flexibility allows you to deter-

mine both your coverage and the premium

you will pay. I can furnish details.

The cost of nursing-home can lay waste to

even the most carefully planned retirement

nest-egg. This could force you to deplete

assets or to rely on your family for help.

Contact me to find out how long-term care

insurance can give you peace of mind.

Member Recruitment

A new fraternal year is upon us.

Congratulations to the newly elected

and appointed council leaders. I’m

sure you have a list of things that

you want to accomplish during the

coming year. I’m eager to help.

What would be helpful to all of us

would be an early start on those

goals, rather than waiting until May

or June. Let’s get an early start on

award season this year.

Fraternally,

Dan Turnwald

Hopscotch Courts

Brother Knights, the PTO

of St. Patrick’s School gave a big

Thank You in the weekly church

bulletin to the members of the

Knights of Columbus for painting

some four square and hopscotch

courts for the school children so

that they could enjoy recess more

ground.

Those

that participated

where Chairman

of the event

Ralph Millen,

who I understand

made some great templates for the

painting, Bill Janes, Mike Welch,

Brent Baughman and Dwight

Frank from St. Patrick. Bob

Rucinski from St. Albert and

Chuck Durbin from St. Aloysius.

Great Job Guys!

3rd Annual Founder’s Day

Dinner/Dance:

This was another great

event put on by the combined

efforts of Fr. Diersen and Bishop

Flaget Councils. Approximately

twenty couples attended this

swingin’ event that featured a DJ

as well as great food.

The lovely setting for the

event was Bethany Hall at

Immaculate Conception Church in

LaGrange, KY.

MSA Walk:

The rain let up just in time

for this event that raised funds for

research to develop a cure for MSA.

Several Brothers, their families

and even a pet or two came out for

the 3-mile walk. Participants

from our Council included Mike

Welch, Frank Fiorini, Dwight,

Shari, Eric & George Frank, Chuck

Durbin, Tom, Andrew, Iain and

Robbie Blocher.

Friends of our council that

participated included St. Patrick

parishioners Larry Jones and

daughters Elena and Lauren,

Blake and Julie Westoff and their

cuddly but huge dog!
