The "Letters from the Earth" column which has been a part Of The Crimson Dawn for quite some t ime wiZL appear no longer because the main souX'ce of the 'Zetter s' is no longer available to uS for use. News and letters, particularlYJX'om overseas, are still welco me and encouraged, as we all enjoy hearing from one another. When letters suitable for inclusion in The CX'imsan ,Dawn are on hand; they will be sha.red with all via this new coZumn By His graoe, may we keep each other well infoX'med on the progress of thi great mission!

Sweet Brothers and Si sters, My wtirmest Namaskar to you all·. When I was at Sectorial Office, I became very attached to my duty. It

was not that I was attached to my position so much as doing the work efficiently. So when my dear sister Radhaka came, I honest ly thought. she could not do it without me. So naturally, I became ill and could not work at all! Still HiS Finance Dept. rolled on. It was then that I was finally able to let go and trust in His plans.

for a year or so I had desperately been wanting to go to AMRIT, but always something stopped me. There again& it wasn't until now by His Grace that lam able to be here.

the word I amri ta I from Sanskrit & means "Nectar of the Gods". The name was well chosen. His words and philosophies we are learning have touched me to the coret and have satisfied my spiritual hunger as never before. Sure. I had been studying the books, but with others to talk to. and someone who knows it well. everything takes on a new light. So many avenues are opened up as inte rchange ideas because then we see the practi co. 1 ity of it a 11. and truly know that this is a way to live and be. What is even mOre important is that the environment here is suited to the vibrations of what we are doing.

I adnit it. I am hooked. I hope that all Margiis have some opportunity to come here. or even

The Chakraborty Commiss ion was formed &n mid-19?4 to investigate:

-Allegations of poisoning of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti in Bankipur Jail on February 12J 1973;

-Tortures and harassment;inflicted on Shrii Shrii Anandamurti and His disciplee;·

-Damages done to Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha with political motivation of the Government concerned;

-Any incid ental matters relating to the above issues

 CC1ffi@mlf@1bCD:llfitW CC(Q)mmull©

Considering the facts and circumstances, the Commission arrives at an irresistible conclusion that the tortures of inhuman nature have been perpetrated by the Central Government, Bihar Government and C.B.I. on Ananda Murtijii and his disciples.

Damages have been done by the said Government to the Ananda Marga Organization and overwhelming witnesses have stated facts regarding this.

Poisonous drug in overdose was administered on Ananda Murtijii, in jail, on 12. 2 . 73. Political motivation induced the Government to do such nefarious act in applying the medicine which undoubtedly acted as poison on Ananda Murtijii. If, by an aillninistration of poisonous drug in overdose and due to its chemical action, serious deterioration of health is cause(-d), that application D f medicine comes within the definition of poison as such, administration of barbituates, which is a poisonous drug, administered to Ananda Murtijii in overdose without prescription and examination on Ananda Murtijii amounts to poisoning him by the administration.

The Government has no respect for the sacred democratic and civil rights of a citizen and the action of the Government towards the Ananda Marga and its Guru is in gross violation of democratic and civil rights as enshrined in our constitution.

The idea of Ananda Marga becoming self SUpporting through honest and profitable means is one whose time has come. In America Wq are ba t hed in wea l t h; a fa;1ta s c flow of green energy engulfs us. It is hard to beleve that we can remain as poor as we do by accident. The anSWer then becomes obvious: we are stopping the flow of money, blocking Ba'ba's green energy from flowing into us as it might.

A shift then must take place in our minds from 'how can poor us get a few bucks' to 'how can we stop

stopping the inflow of Ba'ba's energy, money not exceptedJ that for lack oj' we are hindered in this mission. ' The 'truth' of either myth is not the point. The point is the direction that the mind is pointedJ and from what position it is pointed. This is similar to the flow of beginning sadhana; from seeing ourselves as beinp Door (a negative ego trip" but an ego trip none the less) 1-0 opening ourselves to the flow - which also has economic realities.

when we are told to feed a large gathering we don't mess around with a little saucepan. No, we get a big stewpot. Similarly, we have been playing around with economic savcepans, and we need to work with cauldrons. We have to relax our financial sphincters and let the flow happen. We will have to relax our fears about money. Abstaining from wea l t h, li ke a bs taining from food, can be OK for spiritual growth, but the Guru doesn't want us to die from starvation. Take the mantra and eat with sincerity and devotionJ and don't tense up when He takes the form of nourishment or money. Remember that in our financial crawling and learning to walk we will make mistakes and occasionally fall. That's alright with our Father. We shall soon become track stars! Though we'll fall in the cinders a couple of times, we must continue.

In His whirlpool of Love,

Tapasvi (alias Ross Scalise)

Spacing-out or Tuning-in? It seems to me that for Margiis in the U.S. one of the biggest

obstacles in our way of rea lizing and implementing Ba'ba's mission is that of "spacing-out" . What exactly is "spacing-outM? It is being in no particular space, like a space of meditating, working, communic ating, or relaxing. Being "spaced-out" is allowing one's self to be in between all of these spaces but really experiencing none of them. When we lack the discipline and the one-pointedness of mind to tune our energy into a particular space, we end up being Mspaced-out".

Why does "spacing-out" seem to be a particular problem in Ananda Marga? I think there are two main reasons. The first is because we, as Margiis, have a lot of energy with which to "space-outR• Our Master has given us a dynamic ideology combined with a system of Tantric practices which help us contact and control the infinite energy within our selves . Although we have developed the disci pline to do the practices, we have yet to develop the internal discipline necessary to give proper expression to that energy_

The second reason comes from our recent past. Many of us have come from a drug culture where being "spaced-out" was given positive value. We are still greatly deterred by the youthful attitude of thinking that we are free if we have no re sponsibilities or commitments. But, as Janis Joplin put it, "Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to do."

However, the part of our beings that has begun to penetrate the spiritual world knows this to be a very limited concept of freedom. Actually, we are only as free as we are committed.

Now that we have defined the problem, what can we, as children of a great Father, do about it? First of all, as with any problem, we can recognize it as such. Then we can begin to make some attitudinal changes and adjust our behaviour accordingly.

Another thi ng that we must come to grips with is this idea of commitment, and the role discipline plays in making real commitments. Being committed is as fundamental as not diverting our attention from an activity in which we are engaged. Even this takes discipline because our egos are always willing to trip off on little tangential points of interest , which keeps us from accomplishing the task at hand. But commitment in its more pervasive sense means developing an attitude which responds to a request or an idea for action with -I WILL" and not "Yah, maybe" or "rIll see what I can doR.

Rather than Sitting around saying,"Oh, there is so much work to be doneH, we must, with the ideation of God in our minds, commit ourselves to a particular detail or project (no matter how big or small) and carry it through to its completion. By doing this we will overcome our inferiority feeling of thinking ourselves incapable, and evolve into the dynamic personalities which our Master expects. The way to accomplish something is to mentally determine to do it spark the action of beginning, and then pursue it one-pointedly, allowing no room for negative or inferiority feeling to creep inl

I feel that only by coming to grips with the problem of -spacing-outR and its remedy - commitment and discipline - can we begin to advance with the speed Ba'ba' says is necessary to establish a truly "human societyH.

" Blood less revo l ution is only po ssib le i f the number and i n f l uence o f t he Vipra-minded among the Viks'ubdha S hudra be very great."

-P . R. Sarkar , The Human Society, Part II

Renaissance Universal is Ba'ba's program to mobilize the Vipra-minded--professionals, academics, executives, artists--to create the moral and intellectual revolution necessary to bring about Sadvipra society. Revolution begins on the spiritual plane, and then proceeds through the mental to the physical plane. A revolution to end human exploitation is inevitable, but how we channel our energies may determine whether many lives are spared or lost.

RU is just now manifesting in our Sector, as a channel to bring the Ideology t o society's intellectuals, and to develop and utilize the intellectual potential already existing within A'nanda Ma'rga. Our first project is the creation of a Quarterly journal. Renaissance Universal, to be a forum for progressive thinkers (and doers!) both inside and outside of A'nanda Ma'rga. To reach into the heart of the Viprian culture, the assistance of all Vipra-minded Ma'rgiis is needed. Energy can be utilized in writing articles. which may or may not specifically mention Ba'ba's Ideology or "spirituality." but in some way concretely relate a spiritual perspective to the problems confronting society today. Articles are welcome concerning any aspect of human culture, from the arts, literature, physical or social sciences. Ma'rgiis are also needed to recommend and contact members of the society who might contribute to the journal. and help with distribution and promotion when the first issue is published in Mar ch.

We are also currently preparing short position papers relating the Ideology to specific social issues, such as "RU and the Energy Crisis," "RU and World Population," etc. Suggestions and people wishing to write position papers are welcome. Another RU project is the revising and printing of Amogha Siddhi's paper, Birth of an Ideology, a history of the growth and repression of A'nanda Ma'rga in India, currently being serialized in several Regional Newsletters. RU is also active coordinating interdisciplinary study groups on college campuses on the World Food Crisis, and is planning an East Coast RU Retreat for Ma'rgiis.

We can all help the growth of His Mission by keeping the RU office informed of all interesting lectures, workshops, newspaper and journal articles which appear in our area, which might be used in the journal. RU Newsletter, or made available in an access file to other Ma'rgiis. Please send in anything you think might be useful (tapes of lectures by progressive thinkers outside of A'nanda Ma'rga are especially valuable.) Ba'ba has given us unlimited potential to accelerate humanity's evolutio n through the use of the intellect, guided by our intuition and love. Now it is our responsibility to utilize His gifts for the welfare and upliftment of all. If you are interested in participating in this aspect of His Mission in any way, or have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please write to RU, 24 Witherspoon Ln., Princeton, N.J. 08540.

whl1t is this work?

This month' s philosophy selection is a follow-up to last month's article. It is taken from the same source, Shrii Shrii Anandamurti's book, Ananda Marga, (Elementary Philosophy), chapter III, "What is This World?" Readers may wish to re-read last month's selection, or, better still, review chapters I and II of the source book, which is available at most jagrtis, and is in many Margiis' personal libraries.

It has been reasoned out earlier that Purus'a i s a subtle entity which on being qualified looks crude. In that state, as His consciousness cannot be expanded or opened out, He appears to possess lesser consci ousness. Purus'a gradually appears more and more crude and f inally He ta ke s the crudest form of Ks'it itattva or earth, where we f ind Him as an inanimate object with His consci ousness completely dormant. Thus the greater the influence of Prakrti, the more crude He appears, while with lesser influence He is subtler.

The universe has been created out of Purus'a only. In other words, Purus'a, on being qual ified by the GunIa of Prakrti, has created the un iverse out of His own Self. Purusla we know is (a) subtle ent ity which can be appreciated only as an idea. Yet the moon, the sun, the stars and planets, the atmosphere and earth are all found in th i s creation having been made of the subtle Purus'a. We have to adm it that this creat ion has been formed by a subtle ent ity gradually becoming crude. That Purus'a i s subtle has been established by logical reasoning earli er. Then if th is crude un iverse has been created out o f this subtle (entity), the seed of the crude universe must have exi sted in this subtle entity to germinate into this expansive universe on being qual if ied (by) Prakrti. We get butter from milk only because it existed in milk in another f orm.

Purus'a could not hence be called subtle or understandable only as an idea if the seed of the crude universe existed in H i m. Subtle is something which can be understood or app rec i ated as an idea only and has no crudeness in it. Ether ial factor in which no perceivable crude substance can be traced is called crude because sound can travel through it. Etherial factor has no dimensions and no perceptible exi stence, yet merely becaUse of the presence of the quality of permitting sound waves to travel through it, it is called crude. The presence of someth ing makes it identifiable: it cannot be sa i d to be subtle or understandable only as an idea. Purus'a, if the seed of the uni verse exists in Him, cannot be said to be subtle. He has to be crude, but it has already been establi shed that Purus'a is subtle and so the seed of the crude universe could not exist in Him. Here again a contradictory position arises.

It has been said earlier that the universe is created out of Purus'a, but i f the seed did not exist in Purus1a, how could the universe be created? This sounds w i thout any log ic or reason ing and the only statement which would appear logical is to say that the universe was never created ,

as Purus'a is subtle by nature and (the) crude universe could not be created out of Him. It has, however, been said earlier that the universe was created out of Him and as it has been logically proved to be true, the only other rational statement would be to say tha th7 rude universe was never created reality. Yet the existence of ths vsble universe cannot be ignored.

-8-

DFTS-03696

Page 11: bl - Ananda Marga USAcd.anandamarga.us/1975-02 Crimson Dawn - Newsletter...The "Letters from the Earth" column which has been a part Of The Crimson Dawn for quite some time wiZL appear

In fact, this crude universe is created only as a thought projection of Purus'a. On being influenced by Prakrti, a wave in the mind of Purus'a sets in and in that the entire creation takes on different form as an imaginary entity. The universe comes into being only as an .imaginary entity in the mind of Purus'a, and no crude stuff is required for its creation. Imaginary objects are not crude realities for the creation of which crude stuff may be necessary. Hence Purus'a, who is subtle, can easily create the universe out of His own Self.

Accepting the creation to be only a thought wave gives rise to (the) following doubts:

1. How do we find this world to be real if this is not a crude reality and exists only as (the) thought projection of Purus'a?

2. The creation should come to an end the moment the thought "wave o,fPurus' a ceases to exist. Thought waves or imaginary entities are only momentary and their cessation should being about complete annihilation (of the universe).

When imagination brings a shape into being in a person's mind, it does not appear to be imagination only. I t is mind that imagines , and as long as a person is under this spell of imagination eVery imagined object appears to be factual . It is after this spell is broken that he realizes it to be his imagination only.

Let us now analyse imagination and see how an imagined object appears factual in imagination. In an earlier chapter it has been explained that the part of mind which performs all action is Aham'tattva (ego; sense of, -I do") and the part of mind which shows or becomes the result of action is called Citta (mind stuff). For instance, when Aham'tattva sees a book the Citta grasps the Tanma'tra* of a book and has to take the shape of a book itself. Similary, when a person imagines some forms, the Aham't attva starts functioning and Citta has to take that form to enable Aham'tattva to see it. Like Rama, sitting in Bha'galpore and hinking of Choranghi in Calcutta, makes his Aham'tattva think of Chowranghi and his Citta has to take the form of Chowranghi. At that very moment Aham'tattva starts seeing Chowranghi in imagination.

* Tanma'tra: The inferential vibratory emanation from any object conveying a characteristic of that object to a sense organ is known as 'tanma'tra'. We see because a sight tanma'tra comes to our eyes. we can hear because our ears are sensi ti ve to sound tanrna' tras. etc.

-9-DFTS-03697

Page 12: bl - Ananda Marga USAcd.anandamarga.us/1975-02 Crimson Dawn - Newsletter...The "Letters from the Earth" column which has been a part Of The Crimson Dawn for quite some time wiZL appear

The external application of Citta is with the help of the ten Indriyas (five sensory organs and five motor organs). But while imagining Chowranghi the help of none of the Indriyas is required because Calcutta, being 250 miles a"iay from Bha'galpore, is beyond the reach of all the Indriyas and thus Citta loses its contact with the Indriyas and takes the shape of ,Chowranghi on its own. When Citta loses contact with the Indriyas they become non-functional and the man loses his sense of relationship and distinction of place, time' and person. Rama would know of his existence in Bha'galpore with the help of his eyes only. But if Citta has lost its contact with all the Indriyas and has instead taken up the shape of Chowranghi, it will not be able to make use of the functions of Indriyas of receiving Tanma'tra from immediate surroundings. This makes Rama see Chowranghi in his imagination, although he may be in Bha'galpore at that moment. Because of the Indriyas losing their function, Citta is not able to take the impression of Bha'galpore and Aham'tattva cannot see any part of Bha'galpore. He sees only Cnowranghi and feels himself to be in Chowranghi. Citta only takes up the shape of Chowranghi at the instance of Aham'tattva. It does not imagine. The imagination has to be done by Aham'tat tva and Citta has to become like that substance and take that shape. As soon as the imagination of Aham'tattva ceases, Citta also loses its shape and at the same moment the Indriyas start functioning. Then alone he realizes that the Chowranghi that he has been seeing existed only in his imagination. It is due to this that the imagined object appears factual as long as the spell of imagination lasts. The moment that spell is broken it appears to be imaginary and not real.

Citta has the capacity of taking the form of an object without the help of Tanma'tra, only at the instance of Aham'tattva. The shape that Citta thus takes up is imaginary and not real. Imagination itself is not real, (so) the shape formed in it cannot be real. Imagination may not be real yet Citta has actually to take a shape and so even if the shape is imaginary or unreal, the fact that Citta becomes like it is a reality.

Imagination (Kalpana') has been analysed and why it appears factual has also been seen. It has now to be seen whether this universe has been created as a result of the imagination of Sagun'a Brahma** or not. It has been said earlier that on being influenced by Prakrti,Sagun'a Brahma projected Itself as this universe. This presupposes existence of mind as no action can be perfo1d without mind. The multiple of all unit consciousness is Purus'a in Sagun'a Brahma. It has been seen that every unit consciousness gets mind because of the influence of Prakrti. Purus'a in Sagun'a Brahma, being a mUltiple of all unit consciousness, also gets His mind on being influenced by Prakrti. His mind becomes the collection

** Sagun'a Bratlna: Where Prakrti (the O'perative or qualifying principl e) is active" it is termed 'Sagun'a Ilrahma'. 'gun'a' meaning 'binding force'. 'Sa' meaning" with', Where Prakrti is entirely dormant. it is termed 'Nirgun'a Brahma'. 'Nir' meaning 'without' or 'none', Hence SaQun'a Brahma is activated or manifested Cosmic Consciousness. the manifest creation,

of the infinite unit minds. Just as every unit consciousness is a multiplicity of cosmic consciousness, every unit mind is also a part of the cosmic mind. Cosmic mind being a collection of all the unitminds comprises, like them, of Buddhitattva (pure MIM feeling), Aham'tattva, and Citta. Aham'tattva is the part which works and Citta becomes the result of that action. The universe is thus created by the Aham'tattva of Sagun'a Brahm. by making its Citta take up the form of the creation.

Citta manifests itself in a form in two ways. It could, under the orders of Aham'tattva, take the shape of any object either by grasping the Tanrna'tra with the help of the Indriya or take a shape without grasping any Tanma'tra at the instance of Aham'tattva and as a result of the thought waves of Aham'tattva. The latter is called Kalpana' or imagination, i.e., Citta adopting the shape and form of the objects imagined in the thought waves of Aham'tattva. Nothing existed before or beyond Sagun'a (Brahma), hence its Citta could not take the shape of any external object

even if Aham'tattva wanted it to do so. Its Citta has therefore to adopt the shapes and forms in the thought waves or imagination of Aham'tattva of Sagun'a Brahma. Citta forms the result of the actions performed by Sagun'a Brahma and this universe is also a result of these actions. The-, universe is thus a manifestation of Sagun'a Brahma's Citta. Citta of Sagun'a Brahma has taken up the shape and form of this universe as imagined by Its Aham'tattva, and when Citta takes up a form this way it.is called' Kalpana' or imagination. Hence this creation also is the imagination or Kalpana' of Sagun.' a Brahma,

The universe should not appear to be a reality if it exists only in the imagination of Sagun'a Brahma. Earlier we have seen that the imagination of unit consciousness appears to be factual as long as the spell of imaginati9JLJasts. The imaginiltioll of Sagun 'a Brahma, which is only a multiple of all unit consciousness wif1appear to be factual for the" ,same reasons. It is only this that makes the cosmic'mind also consider Its imagination to be a fact. Unit mind or an iOdividual's mind is only a part of the cosmic mind and whatever appears true to the cosmic mind will also appear true to the indivioual mind. Thus this expanse of universe although existing only in imagination appears to us a reality.

The one who exploited the masses is'also a person; this

Our first Sec t() ia l V.S"Se Camp3 he ld foul' da y8 over new Year's iJn Hutchin80n, Kan8as (at the 8ite of the 2nd & 3rd "U.K.K. " retreats) was a great succeS8. The Dharma Pracar Dept. was hoping 150 might e it3 but when over 200 sincere and dedicated Margiis attended3 an unusually high and devotional vibration was oreated, a s the following report, by si ster Tapa svini, we l l indioa t e s.

V.S.S. stands for "Vishva Shanti Se va", Ifl", "Servioe to Universal Peaoe". Another aoceptable meaning is "Volunteer s in Social Servioe".

I have just returned from one of the MOst beautiful and flowing experiences of my life, theVSS retreat. If I were searching for one word to describe my reaction to the retreat it would be this - Surprise! I, like many others, had heard that there would be a tremendous amount of discipline. I went knowing that it would be ugood for meR, yet somewhat hesitant. I braced myself - like one about to receive a dose of strong medicine. .

What a joke He played on me! He showed my what an intellectual I vas • •• so many preconceived ideas about what RdisciplineR is. Never in my life have I experienced an atmosphere of such incredibly high energy, such lOVing, beautiful people, such a strong family feeling! We all realized at the beginning that this was going to be a great opportunity to grow closer to each other and to Ba'ba', and that discipline is a necessary tool for growth. And so everyone put all their energy into really trying to make it workr to follow the schedule, to be on time, etc. No complaining, no negativity, no hanging out, no little groups standing in hallways criticising. Just the very powerful vibration of everyone trying to -unite our intention-. It was truely inspiring to see a meeting dismissed and 220 Margiis take half-bath and return to their places within seven minutes. The positive energy generated from everyone trying to Rmove together- was really elevating.

As one brother put it, uThis retreat is to create the feeling that we all are the same. Everyone's ego will get powdered down a littleo· To alleviate the feeling that -I am special, live been in Ananda Marga four years· etc., everyone, acaryas, LFT9s, old Margiis, new Margiisg - everyone did the same duties, fOllowed the same schedule, and everyone's ego, 18m sure, did feel a bit more humble at the end,.

The activities WERE rigorous. The schedul WAS tight. Yet the very word DISCIPLINE has taken on an entirley new meaning in my dictionary. To me , it now means FREEDOM freedom from the bandages of negative habits, freedom of movement to the Higher Self, and freedom from sluggishnesse - the opportunity to move about on the wings of higher and higher energy. That bitter medicine 1 had bargained for turned out to be an ice cream sundae!

an encampment of love The day began with calisthenics and karate warm-ups, and phys

ical activities were spaced regulary throughout the day. The results were amazing@ Instead of people sleeping in class, feeling lazy or "run-down", our bodies were alert and vibrant, and all around ?eople were expressing their amazement at how little sleep they seemed to need$ One sister related how she had come into t he sisters' dorm in the middle of the night and could hardly believe the vibration -

even though everyone was asleep. she said, there was no Msleep vibra tionOO at all. And that is something many of us experienced, - the feeling that we never did really sleep, in the usual sense of the word, - the energy level was so incredibly high, that we just got carried along, like so many bubbles on the crest of a wave .

I am so very grateful to Him for giving me the opportunity of attending this retreato I only hope that there will be many others so that all the Margiis will be able to enjoy this beautiful exper-ienceo

.

The VSS Retreat really brought about a new realization in my life@ the realization that discipline is the key to freedom. And I now know through direct experience that earnestly trying to follow the 16 Points is the most joyous thing one can do.

ooUnderstanding the real meaning of restraint, make proper use of it and you will see that your sensual desires have taken to the path of cessation with facile ease - you will notice what .a pierful vibration of energy your cessationward sensual propensities have created in your psychic body and how your mind is proceeding towards the internal world -towards the Supreme Being with irresistible force . -

Shrii Shrii Anandamurti , from Subha's'ita Sam'graha , IV, Chapter IQ "The Chariot and the Charioteer"

It is not necessary to go into the details of the retreat -that can only be understood through direct experience. But what I want to convey is the beauty, the joy, and most of all, the impact of the love expressed there. Such a feeling of Sam'gaccadvam'! Such a feeling of NUnity, Strength, OrganizationW (now I understand these words!), and such a family feeling of love. Alr-of us were struck by the realization that "Yes, it really is happening!" What we've all been hoping and waiting for so long is finally beginning to manifest. Someone related the story of how Swami Vivekananda said, "Give me 12 lion-hearted people and I can change the world • • • only . two in each country and the entire world can be changed." We all realized that the time has come. Baiba9 has given us the greatest opportunity of many lifetimes, and we can. in fact. change the world. He has given us the tools, the most beautiful gift, the 16 Points , and now it8s up to us ..

·You have to serve humanity. You have to dedicate yourself to the cause of man as (a) whole. Your life is valuable. You should not waste a single moment. The task is glorious. The task is novel. Lead the life of a warrior and constantly fight against evils. You will be victoriou s . So march ahead! March ahead! March ahead!-

Dada Pranavanandaji 's letter:

The follohling letter hla s received at Sectorial HQ in Denver

quite recently (mid-January) from Dada Pranavanandaji, Actin g

General Secretary of Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samg ha.

December 15, 1974

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

This is to confirm the following telegram having been sent to you---

"ATULANANDAJI IMMOLATED HINSELF INSIDE JAIL ELEVENTH DECEMBER PROTESTING AGAINST INDISCRIMINATE SEARCH OF BABA'S CELL AND BELONGINGS AND BODYLIFTING ANp HUMILIf\TION DONE TO. BABA NOVEMBER 26. HE WAS DEMANDING RESTORATION OF BABA'S RING STOLEN THAT DAY BY SEARCH PARTY STOP ORGAIHSE DEMONSTRATIONS AND MOBILISE WORLD OPINION AGAINST THESE BRUTALITIES. INFORM l\LL WORKERS AND UNITS. DETAILS FOLLOW."

As you might have already known from our various communications that Govt authorities especially the prison ones have been creating pin pricks off and on causing provocation. They took off the curtain from Baba's cell-door which is made of iron bars and exposed Baba to the chill of winter nights. Very often they lock Him early in the evening much before scheduled time and invariably they disturb Baba during Puja hours by knocking the lock and frequently they search Baba and cell in most uncourteous, careless and irresponsible manner.

It was on November 26 that a search party led by jail superintendent entered Baba's cell ahd conducted the search. During the search they treated Baba in most disrespectful and humiliating manner, bodily lifted Him times and again, disrobed Atulanandaji and scattered Baba's things on the floor. To make the pinch most felt they virtually stolen Baba's pearl-studded ring. I t was really too much! too much!

When Baba came to know that ring is missing which was kept in His purse, He immediately wrote to Governor of Bihar, I.G. Prisons andI.G. Police. Perhaps this letter was also dumped in the chilling darkness of cold storage as might have been the fate of His earlier letters. When we came to know it all, representations and protests were made to several Govt. authorities but to no avail.

On December 10, Atulanandaji gave a written ultimatum that if Baba's ring was not restored by the noon of December 11, he would immolate himself. This warning was also treated in a cold and heartless manner. True to his words Atulanandaji sprinkled kerosene over his body and set it to fire shortly after mid-day on December 11. When the fire was detected, they tried to extinguish but it was too late. He sustained severe burn-injuries. He was rushed to hospital where he breathed out last six hour later into the realm of eternity.

Sisters and Brothers!!1 Perhaps we had gone into slumber turning our eyes and ears off from tortures, humiliations and pangs of slow death Baba was going through and perhaps it needed this supreme sacrifice on the part of Atulanandajito awaken us to the realities of Baba's physical anguish. Shall we respond to the call which Atulanandaji has made by his supreme sacrifice? Shall we shake off lethrgy, rise into fury and jump into action to avenge the prolonged and tortuous persecution of Baba, Ananda Marga, and Ananda Margiis? Do we (the Ananda Margi,i community all over the world) have the guts to declare war on immoral forces ? Are we ready to put our every thing at stake in our fight to liberate Baba? If so, let us not waste time. Let us declare emergency and let our all programme, all activities and all projects be war-oriented. Let us mobilise and concentrate all our resources and energy in a supreme effort and let us eventually begin the fight to liberate Baba without loss of time.
