TTT E who does not practise altruism; he who is^ -* not prepared to share his last morsel with aweaker or poorer than himself; he who neglectsto help his brother man, of whatever race, nationor creed, whenever and wherever he meets suffer-ing, and who turns a deaf ear to the cry of humanmisery is no Theosophist.

HELENA P. BLAVATSKYEach human being is an incarnation of his God,

in other words, one with his " Father in Heaven."All that an average man can know of his " Father "is what he knows of himself, through and withinhimself. The soul of his " Heavenly Father " isincarnated in him. The soul is himself, if he issuccessful in assimilating the divine individualitywhile in his physical animal shell.

No Theosophist has a right to remain idle, onthe excuse that he knows too little to teach.

^Th^ identity of our physical origin makes no

appeal to our higher and deeper feelings. Matter, deprived of its soul and spirit, or its divine essence, cannot speak to the human heart. But the identityof the soul and spirit, of real, immortal man, asTheosophy teaches us, once proven and deep-rootedin our hearts, would lead us far on the road ofreal charity and brotherly good will.

QUOTATIONSThb fearless warrior, his precious life-blood

oozing from his wide and gaping wounds, willstill attack the foe, drive him from out his strong-hold, vanquish him, ere he himself expires. Act,then, all ye who fail and suffer, act like him ; andfrom the stronghold of your Soul chase all yourfoes away ambition, anger, hatred, e'en to theshadow of desire when even you have failed.

^A MAN who would wield a two-edged sword,

must be a thorough master of the blunt weapon.^

Let thy Soul lend its ear to every cry of painlike as the Lotus bares its heart to drink the morn-ing sun.Let not the fierce Sun dry one tear of painbefore thyself hast wiped it from the sufferer'seye. But let each burning human tear drop onthy heart and there remain, nor ever brush it off, until the pain that caused it is removed.

    HELENA P. BLAVATSKY

Strive with thy thoughts unclean before theyoverpower thee. Use them as they will thee, for ifthou sparest them and they take root and grow, know well, these thoughts will overpower and killthee. Beware, Disciple, sufifer not, e'en though itbe their shadow, to approach. For it will grow, increase in size and power, and then this thing ofdarkness will absorb thy being before thou hastwell realized the black foul monster's presence.

" Truth, high-seated upon its rock of adamant,is alone eternal and supreme."

Our Higher Self is a poor pilgrim on his wayto regain that which he has lost.

For every flower of love and charity you plantin your neighbor's garden, a loathsome weed willdisappear from your own.

QUOTATIONSNo one; can study ancient philosophies seriously

without perceiving that the striking similitude ofconception between all in their exoteric formvery often, in their hidden spirit invariably is theresult of no mere coincidence, but of a concurrentdesign ; and that there was, during the youth ofmankind, one language, one knowledge, one uni-versal religion, when there were no churches, nocreeds, or sects, but when every man was priestunto himself. And, if it is shown that already inthose ages which are shut out from our sight bythe exuberant growth of tradition, human religiousthought developed in uniform sympathy in everyportion of the globe ; then, it becomes evident thatborn under whatever latitude, in the cold Northor the burning South, in the East or West, thatthought was inspired by the same revelations, andman was nurtured under the protecting shadow ofthe same Tree oe Knowledge.

The selfish devotee lives to no purpose. Theman who does not go through his appointed workin life has lived in vain.

HELENA P. BLAVATSKYFrom birth to death every man is weaving des-

tiny around himself, as a spider does his web.

Man requires but one church the Temple ofGod within him.

Give up thy life if thou wouldst live.

Those who worship before the shrine of theever-Unknowable Cause of all causes, ought to doso in the Silence and sanctified solitude of theirSouls.

Happiness may follow the performance of duty, but must not be the motive for it.

QUOTATIONSIt [Theosophy] will gradually leaven and per-

meate the great mass of thinking and intelligentpeople with its large-minded and noble ideas ofReligion, Duty, and Philanthropy. Slowly butsurely it will burst asunder the iron fetters ofcreeds and dogmas, of social and caste prejudicesit will break down racial and national antipathiesand barriers, and will open the way to the practicalrealization of the Brotherhood of all men.

" So shalt thou be in full accord with all thatlives ; bear love to men as though they were thybrother pupils, disciples of one teacher, the sonsof one sweet mother."

ThosS who practise their duty towards all, andfor duty's own sake, are few; and fewer stillare those who perform that duty, remaining con-tent with the satisfaction of their own secretconsciousness.

HELENA P. BLAVATSKYThere is a road, steep and thorny, beset with

perils of every kind, but yet a road, and it leadsto the Heart of the Universe. I can tell you howto find those who will show you the secret gate-way that leads inward only and closes fast behindthe neophyte for evermore. There is no dangerthat dauntless courage cannot conquer ; there isno trial that spotless purity cannot pass through;there is no difficulty that strong intellect cannotsurmount. For those who win onward, there isreward past all telling, the power to bless and serveHumanity. For those who fail, there are otherlives in which success may come.

^Sow kindly acts and thou shalt reap their frui-

tion. Inaction in a deed of mercy becomes anaction in a deadly sin.

^Be humble if thou wouldst attain to Wisdom.

Be humbler still, when Wisdom thou hast mastered.

QUOTATIONSFor mind is like a mirror; it gathers dust while

it reflects. It needs the gentle breezes of Soul-Wisdom to brush away the dust of our illusions.Seek, O beginner, to blend thy Mind and Soul.

^Be more severe with yourself than with others

be more charitable towards others than towardsyourself.

^Nature gives up her innermost secrets and im-

parts true wisdom only to him who seeks truthfor its own sake and who craves for knowledge inorder to confer benefits on others, not on his ownunimportant personality.

That light that burns in thee, dost thou feel itdifferent in any wise from the light which shinesin other men?

HELENA P. BLAVATSKYMan is arrogant in proportion to his ignorance.

The; duty of a Theosophist : to fear no oneand naught save the tribunal of his own conscience.

AIy doctrine is not mine, but Theirs who sent me.

" Theosophist is, who Theosophy does."

Self Knowledge is of loving deeds the child.

Theosophy is the quintessence of duty.

QUOTATIONSThe;rE is but one Eternal Truth, one universal,

infinite and changeless spirit of Love, Truth andWisdom, impersonal, therefore, bearing a differentname in every nation, one Light for all, in whichthe whole Humanity lives and moves, and hasits being. Like the spectrum in optics giving multi-colored and various rays, which are yet caused byone and the same sun, so theologized and sacerdotalsystems are many. But the universal religion canonly he one if we accept the real primitive meaningof the root of that word. We Theosophists soaccept it; and therefore say, we are all brothers by the laws of nature, of birth, of death, asalso by the laws of our utter helplessness frombirth to death in this world of sorrow and deceptiveillusions. Let us then love, help and mutuallydefend each other against the spirit of deception;and while holding to that which each of us acceptsas his ideal of truth and unity i. e., to the reli-gion which suits each of us best let us unite toform a practical nucleus of a Universal Brother-hood of Humanity without distiction of race, creedor color.

^T^HBOSOPHY is that ocean of knozvledge which-* spreads from shore to shore of the evolutionof sentient beings; unfathomable in its deepestparts, it gives the greatest minds their fullest scope, yet, shallozv enough at its shores, it will not over-whelm the understanding of a child.

WILLIAM Q. JUDGEOur philosophy of life is one grand whole, every

part necessary and fitting into every other part.Every one of its doctrines can and must be carriedto its ultimate conclusion. Its ethical applicationmust proceed similarly. If it conflict with oldopinions those must be cast off. It can never con-flict with true morality. The spirit of Theosophymust be sought for; a sincere application of itsprinciples to life and act should be made. Thusmechanical Theosophy, which inevitably leadsas in many cases it already has to a negation ofbrotherhood, will be impossible, and instead therewill be a living, actual Theosophy. This will thenraise in our hearts the hope that at least a smallnucleus of Universal Brotherhood may be formedbefore we of this generation are all dead.

Thb; fact that we are now working in the Theo-sophical movement means that we did so in otherlives, must do so again, and still more importantthat those who are now with us will be reincarnatedin our company on our next rebirth.

QUOTATIONSHold fast in silence to all that is your own,

for you will need it in the fight; but never, neverdesire to get knowledge or power for any otherpurpose than to give it on the altar, for thus alonecan it be saved to you.

The true road is plain and easy to find ; it isso easy that very many would-be students miss it,because they can not believe it to be so simple.

/The person who revolves selfishly around himself

as a center, is in greater danger of delusion thanany one else.

No POWER, human or divine, can save us fromthe consequences of acts performed. Each manis his own Creator, creating his future life by hispresent. The end to be reached is self-dependence,with perfect calmness and clearness.

  • 7/30/2019 Blavatsky, HP - Junge, WQ - Tinglay, K - Quotations (1912)

    32/56

WILLIAM Q. JUDGEIn a place like yours, where so many of all sorts

of natures are together, there is a unique oppor-tunity for gain and good in the chance it gives onefor self-discipline. There friction of personalityis inevitable, and if each one learns the great " giveand take," and looks not for the faults of others, but for the faults he sees in himself, because ofthe friction, then great progress can be made.

Organize and Work, for work, unfaltering work,is the first expression of brotherhood, and organizedwork is the second as well as the last expressionof the same ideal. Masters, knowing how to workwith nature, are the most perfectly organized bodyin the world; for nature as a whole and in all herdepartments is the faultless type of organization, and, as one of the Masters wrote, they " but followand servilely copy nature in her works." Let thisyear, then, be one of Work and Organization.

    33/56

QUOTATIONSThe power to know does not come from book-

study nor from mere philosophy, but mostly fromthe actual practice of altruism in deed, word, andthought ; for that practice purifies the covers of thesoul and permits that light to shine down into thebrain-mind.

Remember this : that as you live your life eachday with an uplifted purpose and unselfish desire, each and every event will bear for you a deep sig-nificance an inner meaning and as you learntheir import, so do you fit yourself for higher work.

Use with care those living messengers called" Words."

True mercy is not favor but impartial Justice.

    34/56

WILLIAM Q. JUDGEThe; placid surface of the sea of Spirit is the

only mirror in which can be caught, undisturbed, the reflections of Spiritual things.

    Jt

It is not what is done, but the spirit in whichthe least thing is done, that is counted.

    Jt

Three great ideas. Among many ideas broughtforward through the Theosophical Movement thereare three which should never be lost sight of. Notspeech, but thought, really rules the world ; so, ifthese three ideas are good let them be rescuedagain and again from oblivion. The first idea is, that there is a great Cause

in the sense of an enterprise called the Cause ofSublime Perfection and Human Brotherhood. Thisrests upon the essential unity of the whole humanfamily, and is a possibility because sublimity inperfectness and actual realization of brotherhoodon every plane of being are one and the same thing.

  • 7/30/2019 Blavatsky, HP - Junge, WQ - Tinglay, K - Quotations (1912)

    35/56

QUOTATIONSThe second idea is, that man is a being who may

be raised up to perfection, to the stature of theGodhead, because he himself is God incarnate. This noble doctrine was in the mind of Jesus, whenhe said that we must be perfect even as is theFather in Heaven. This is the idea of humanperfectibility. It will destroy the awful theory ofinherent original sin which has held and grounddown the western Christian nations for centuries.

The third idea is the illustration, the proof, thehigh result of the others. It is, that the greatHelpers of Humanity those who have reachedup to what perfection this period of evolution andthis solar system will allow are living, veritablefacts, and not abstractions, cold and distant. Theyare, as our old H. P. Blavatsky so often said, livingmen. These Helpers as living facts and high idealswill fill the soul with hope, will themselves helpall who wish to raise the human race.

Let us not forget these three great ideas.

KATHERINE TINGLEYSee: the gates of Life and Peace standing open

before you, if you have but faith and trust to enterin. But none can enter alone, each must bring withhim the sad and sorrowing. None can cross thethreshold alone, but must help to bear the burdensof the overburdened, must aid the feeble steps ofthose who are discouraged, must support those whoare bowed down with sin and despair, and as hesends out the radiation of his own joy and strengthwhich he receives from his own aspirations anddevotion to his own Higher Self, joy and strengthand power shall enter into the lives of those others, and together they shall pass through into Life.

QUOTATIONSOh ! that every atom in my being were a thous-

and-pointed star to help men to see the divineeverywhere, to know their limitless power, to feelwhile in the body the exhaustless Joy of Real Life,to wake and live instead of dreaming the heavydreams of this living death, to know themselves asat once part of and directors of Universal Law.This is your birthright of Wisdom, and the hour ofattainment is nozv if you will. The great trouble with the human race is thatits members do not rightly value the imaginationwith which they are blessed.

It is imagination, recognized as a liberatingpower, that produces the gems of poetry and artwhich we so much admire, and it is the mindproperly guided by this power which will elevateus all.

  • 7/30/2019 Blavatsky, HP - Junge, WQ - Tinglay, K - Quotations (1912)

    42/56

KATHERINB TINGLBYFear nothing, for every renewed effort raises

all former failures into lessons, all sins into ex-periences. Understand me when I say that in thelight of renewed effort the Karma of all your pastalters ; it no longer threatens ; it passes from theplane of penalty before the soul's eye, up to thatof tuition. It stands as a Monument, a reminderof past weakness and a warning against futurefailure. So fear nothing for yourself; you arebehind the shield of you reborn endeavor, thoughyou have failed a hundred times. Try slowly tomake it your motive for fidelity that others maybe faithful. Fear only to fail in your duty toothers, and even then let your fear be for them, not yourself. Not for thousands of years have theopposing forces been so accentuated. Not one ofyou can remain neutral ; if you think you can, andseek to do so, in reality you are adding your powersto those of darkness and lending your strength tothe forces of evil. The cry has gone out to each, and each must choose. This is your opportunity.

  • 7/30/2019 Blavatsky, HP - Junge, WQ - Tinglay, K - Quotations (1912)

    43/56

QUOTATIONSAs a body of students we have advanced to the

point where, if we will, we may interpret the HigherLaw in a new way: for we have that divine powerwhich enables us to interpret and, to an extent, tounderstand, the workings of the Law. When wefail in this it is because there is a lack of faithin ourselves, and a lack of trust in that divinequality of the nature that makes clear all things forrighteousness.

    Jt

Wisdom comes from the performance of dutyand in the silence, and only the silence expresses it.

While; the bells are ringing on the outer plane, calling men to a recognition of the New Time, thesoft, silvery tones of the compassionate Heart ofLife are sounding forth their sweet music to thesouls of men, calling them away from the paths ofdarkness, unrighteousness, and despair, to the ever-abiding Glory of a Truer and Better Life, and theHope and Peace of a New Day.

will not see the Light, for the Light itself hasnever faded and never will.

Where there is industry there is prosperity;where there is prosperity there is happiness ; wherethere is happiness there is hope for the realizationof a more perfect life.

    5e

When we look into the present, into the heartsand minds of men, and get the " feel " of thingswhen we listen to the mighty, mighty urge ofthe moment, we know that we are challenged bythe Higher Law to do ten thousand times morethan we have done before, ten thousand times morethan any other body of people on earth. Why?First, because we have the knowledge; second, because we have the opportunity; third, becausewe have this Center from which to work.

QUOTATIONSScepticism has been the great stumbling-block

for humanity all down the ages. It has ever stoodbetween man and his divine possibilities. But whena man bestirs himself to right action, and beginsto feel the possibility of a divine life in himself, then the door will open and he will find com-panionship and help all along the way, even in themost silent and most trying moments of his life.

Humanity calls for aid. Who of you has thestrength, the will, to go forward? To them I call, and upon them is already the flush and the Lightof the victory beyond conception.

Humanity has long wandered through the darkvalley of bitter experiences. But the mountainheights are again seen, suffused with the glow ofdawn and the promise of a New Gk)lden Age. Thepathway is once more seen to that realm wherethe Gods abide.

  • 7/30/2019 Blavatsky, HP - Junge, WQ - Tinglay, K - Quotations (1912)

KATHBRINE TINGLEThe truest and fairest thing of all, as regards

education, is to attract the mind of the pupil to thefact that the immortal self is ever seeking to bringthe whole being into a state of perfection. Thereal secret of the Raja Yoga system is rather toevolve the child's character than to overtax thechild's mind : it is to bring out, rather than tobring TO, the faculties of the child. The granderpart is from within.

You can never tell how far an apparently in-significant bit of good work may spread, for it islike a stone thrown into the water in the endlesssuccession of ripples.
