FEATURES OF THE BLE*/*: ENHANCED GALLIUM ARSENIDE

    Optional Enhanced Gallium Arsenide (E-GaAs)

hybrids are now available in the STARLINE BLE.

These E-GaAs hybrids now replace the GaAs hybrids

from the previous BLE platform. This second

    generation technology provides improved distortion

performance in CTB and CSO over the standard GaAs

technology. Compared to silicon and competing GaAs

    technology, E-GaAs distortion performance remains

linear at significantly higher output levels. This higher

output level allows the customer to maximize system

performance and reduce system costs. We encourage

our customers to contact their Motorola Account

Representative to determine the optimal levels for their

    systems.

    DESCRIPTIONHIGH GAIN

Motorolas STARLINE series line extender, model

BLE*/*, leads the industry in features and performance

and is designed to meet the needs of today's expanding

    broadband communication networks. This two-way

capable single output amplifier offers high gain, high

    output levels, improved ergonomics, improved

distortion performance, five diplex filter options, 16 dB

return loss for E-GaAs, and Bode equalization. The

BLE*/* also allows optional advanced features such as

ingress control switching and status monitoring.

The latest BLE also offers high gain for both silicon

and E-GaAs platforms. This allows the operator to

hold existing amplifier locations during system

    upgrades thereby reducing system costs.

    ERGONOMICS: ENHANCED EASE OF USE

Enhanced ergonomics add to the ease of use for the

latest STARLINE series BLE*/*. This ease of use is

achieved by implementing taller attenuators as well as

plastic shells and guides for forward and return

equalizers, cable simulators and response correction

boards. All field- installed components are easily

accessible through the chassis cover and can be

installed and removed by a gloved hand without a

tool. Block diagrams distinguishing forward and return

paths by color are also printed on the chassis covers for

easy reference of components. The ergonomicaccessories are equivalent to the previous accessories,

with the addition of removable plastic guides and

shells. All current and former accessories are

    completely backward/forward compatible (please

    see Backward/Forward Compatibility section).

    BACKWARD/FORWARD COMPATIBILITY

Forward Compatibility: The latest BLE units may use

all ergonomic accessories, but it is also possible to use

the older version EQ-*-*, BCS-*-*, SEE-*-*, and JXP-

*A if desired. There is no need to remove the chassis

cover to install the older accessories into the newerunits.

    Backward Compatibility: The ergonomic accessories

are the same as the previous accessories, except for the

addition of the plastic guides and shells. See chart

below for nomenclature. Therefore, the plastic guides

and shells can be removed for use in older BLE

    versions.

BLE compatibility: If an electronics only package (E-

pack) is ordered, it will include the deeper housing

cover to accommodate ergonomic accessories. Note:

this is not the deeper housing cover associated with the status monitor. When ordering the status monitor

option, a deep housing cover is also required.

The reversible BLE*/* electronics package can be

made backward compatible with the STARLINE JLX

and 10-Amp BLE housing by installing the BLE-15

AMP Kit. This kit contains 50 mil gold plated platform

assemblies. This makes it possible for the amplifier to

carry 15 Amperes continuous through the input or

output ports and up to 20 Amperes for 2 hours at +60

    C. There is also a low current (10A) option on the

configurator that can be ordered for the electronic

module (no housing included) which is backwardcompatible with the STARLINE JLX and 10-Amp BLE

housing, without the use of a kit.

    60/90 VOLT POWERING

The BLE*/* is capable of 60 or 90 Vac powering. The

power supply provides a regulated 24 Vdc output over

an ac input voltage range from 38 Vac through 90 Vac

rms. The power supply also contains the additional

feature of a two position (LO and HI) selector that sets

the startup voltage of the power supply.

The BLE*/* is shipped with the selector set for 60 Vac

(LO). There is no damage to the amplifier if the jumper

is not changed. However, changing the jumper ensures

that the dc supply does not turn on until the proper

input voltage level is reached either 38 Vac or 55

Vac. This prevents excessive loading of the system

power supply during turn-on after a system shutdown.

The standard gas discharge tube surge arrestor can be

replaced with the Fast Transfer Electronic Crowbar

(FTEC-BTA) type surge suppressor for longer life

    overvoltage protection.

    DIRECTIONAL COUPLER TEST POINTS

Other features include -20 dB directional coupler test

points at the forward input, forward output, return input

and return output. The BLE*/* is enclosed in the BLE-

HSG/15 which allows access to test points without

    opening the housing.

    FORWARD PATH

The operational gain of the 750 MHz silicon version is

29 dB with 15 dB return loss. The 870 MHz silicon

version achieves 30 dB operational gain with return

loss of 15 dB. All E-GaAs BLE amplifiers achieve 28

dB of gain with 16 dB return loss. There is also a high

gain E-GaAs option which achieves 32 dB of gain.

Output level control is achieved through the use of an

interstage Bode equalizer which compensates for

coaxial cable attenuation changes due to temperature.

Equalization may be controlled manually, with a

thermal drive unit (Model TDU) or with a single pilot

closed loop automatic drive unit (Model ADU-XXX/*).

Both the TDU and the ADU boards are common to the

STARLINE family of amplifiers. ADU's utilize Surface

Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters for determining pilot

frequency. This improves amplifier stability over

    temperature.

The BLE*/* uses modular diplex filters which can be

changed for a different frequency split as required. The

amplifier can be configured with S split filters for a 5-

40 MHz return and a 52-870 MHz forward band. E

    splits (5-30 MHz/47-870 MHz), K splits (5-42

    MHz/54-870 MHz), J splits (5-55 MHz/70-870 MHz),

and A splits (5-65 MHz/85-870 MHz) are also

    available. NETWORK MONITORING

These same filters can be used for all Motorola RF

    distribution amplifiers.

The optional status monitoring transponder, model LL-

    BLE-F3, handles RF electronics performance,

measurement control and alarm generation. The LL-BLE-F3 monitors AC line voltage, power supply

voltage, internal temperature and features an optical

tamper switch. The LL-BLE-F3 is also used to control

the optional ingress control switch and is frequency

    agile up to 120 MHz.

    RETURN PATH

Return amplifier kits can be ordered with either high

gain or low gain hybrids providing 24 dB and 19 dB

minimum station gain, respectively. Return path

equalizers from 0 to 12 dB can be customer selected.

Optional features include thermal compensation and

    ingress control switching. Thermal compensation

comes in the form of a plug-in JXP-TH*B, which

stabilizes gain and match over temperature extremes.

When selecting the LL-BLE-F3 as an option, the

    deeper housing lid is required.

    CONFIGURATION

Also available is Ingress Control Switching in 3 states.

This pin diode attenuator circuit can lower levels by 6dB or by 38 dB with a controlled slew rate for

minimum bit errors. The LIFELINE Broadband Line

    Extender transponder, model LL-BLE-F3, and

accompanying deeper housing lid are required to

operate the Ingress Control Switch from a remote

    location.

To reduce customer costs and to accommodate

customer specific needs, the STARLINE BLE*/* can be fully configured in the Motorola factory at no

    additional cost to the customer.

Please refer to the BLE*/* configurator for options

    (see attached).

    1. Operating passband of station. Diplex filters are plugged into the electronic chassis.

    2. Referenced to the average gain across the stated passband.

    3. Minimum full gain at 870 MHz includes loss of equalizer but Bode slope reserves have not been set. Returngain includes loss of SRE-*-4 return equalizer. For E-GaAs, the standard minimum full gain is 32 dB. There

is also a high gain E-GaAs configurable option of 36 dB.

    4. Operational gain includes loss of slope reserves as well as equalizer. ForE-GaAs, the standard operational

gain is 28 dB. There is also a high gain E-GaAs configurable option of 32 dB. For systems using 870 MHz

silicon that are designed to the previous amplifiers with 26 dB of gain, implementing the P option in the

Configurator Special Options box will give a lower gain version of the new amplifier to match the old 26 dB

    of gain.

    5. Amount of Bode slope control range from midpoint (typical setting is -4 dB at 870 MHz @ 20C). This

control should not be used for gain reduction.

    6. Amount of slope created and cable equivalence of fixed interstage equalizer. Interstage equalizer is a plug-in.

    7. Noise Figure performance is specified typical. Noise Figure is specified at the cable entry facility of the

housing and includes the loss of 1 dB for the pre-stage equalizer. The return Noise Figure includes the station

    loss preceding the RF hybrid.

    8. Frequencies that relate the picture carriers or passband edges to the specified output levels and tilts.

    9. Measured with CW carriers and spectrum analyzer over specified temperature range. References the worst-

case channel. Specifications are compliant with the test methods as stated in NCTA RECOMMENDED

PRACTICES FOR MEASUREMENTS ON CABLE TELEVISION SYSTEMS.

    10. Measured with wave analyzer and synchronous, 100% depth modulated channels. References the worst-case

channels over specified temperature range. Specifications are compliant with the test methods as stated inNCTA RECOMMENDED PRACTICES FOR MEASUREMENTS ON CABLE TELEVISION SYSTEMS.

    11. Composite Second Order distortion refers only to those beat clusters that fall +0.75 MHz and +1.25 MHz

above the subject picture carrier. CSO beat clusters that have a -0.75 MHz and -1.25 MHz relationship to the

subject picture carrier are not included in this specification.

    12. CIN (Carrier-to-Intermodulation Noise). Contributions of data compression to noise floor. Performance

varies on a two-for-one basis with amplifier output level and should be calculated in a cascade using a 20 log

function, but CIN should be added to the high channel C/N calculation on a 10 log basis.

    13. Test points should be used with GFAL adaptor.

    14. Match measurement at the station input and output, cable-entry facilities, at the specified passbands foroperational gain.

    15. Measured with the stated AC Bypass Current.

    16. Measured at the power connector.

    17. Current draw at +24.0 VDC.

    1. Operating passband of station. Diplex filters are plugged into the electronic chassis.

    2. Referenced to the average gain across the stated passband.

    3. Minimum full gain at 750 MHz includes loss of equalizer but Bode slope reserves have not been set.

For E-GaAs, the standard gain is 28 dB.

There is also a high gain E-GaAs configurable option of 32 dB.

    5. Amount of Bode slope control range from midpoint (typical setting is -4 dB at 750 MHz @ 20C). This

control should not be used for gain reduction.

The return Noise Figure includes the stationloss preceding the RF hybrid.

Specifications are compliant with the test methods as stated in

NCTA RECOMMENDED PRACTICES FOR MEASUREMENTS ON CABLE TELEVISION SYSTEMS.

    11. Composite Second Order distortion refers only to those beat clusters that fall +0.75 MHz and +1.25 MHzabove the subject picture carrier.

    14. Match measurement at the station input and output, cable-entry facilities, at the specified passbands for

    operational gain.

    15. Measured with the stated AC Bypass Current.

    16. Measured at the power connector.

    17. Current draw at +24.0 VDC.

    18. AC current is stated in RMS continuous. A 10-amp compatible electronics package is also available for

installing into older 10-amp housings during upgrades.

    19. Group Delay is specified for standard NTSC video, where delay is the delta from picture carrier to 3.58 MHz

color subcarrier. Reverse delay is in a 1.5 MHz bandwidth.

    20. Hum Modulation performance is stated typical. Return band specified from 15 MHz. Hum Modulation (5MHz to 15 MHz) is 55 dBc.

    21. Distortion numbers are worst case over temperature in a cascade.

    22. The compressed data loading is QAM carriers and are 6 dB relative to the analog CW carriers.

    23. CTB (Composite Triple Beat). At the specified channel loading, Enhanced Gallium Arsenide performance

varies on a two point three-for-one (2.3:1) basis with amplifier output level.
