  • Next Sunday's Mass Readings – January 17, 2021

    Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

    Reading I 1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19

Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was.

The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.”

“I did not call you, “ Eli said. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep.

Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am, “ he said. “You called me.”

But Eli answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.”

At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD, because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet.

The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.”

Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth.

So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.”

When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, “Samuel,

Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.

    Responsorial Psalm Psalms 40:2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10

    R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

I have waited, waited for the LORD, and he stooped toward me and heard my cry.

And he put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God.

    R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

Sacrifice or offering you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me.

Holocausts or sin-offerings you sought not; then said I, “Behold I come.”

    R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.

“In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, to do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!”

    R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

I announced your justice in the vast assembly; I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know.

    R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

    Reading II 1 Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20

    Brothers and sisters:

    The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body;

God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?

But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with him. Avoid immorality.

Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body.

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not

your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.

    Gospel John 1:35-42

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”

The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.

Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?”

They said to him, “Rabbi” — which translated means Teacher —, “where are you staying?”

He said, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day.

It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.

He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” — which is translated Christ —.

Then he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which is translated Peter.

PARENT INFORMATION REGARDING TUITION ASSISTANCE 2021-2022 DIOCESAN TUITION ASSISTANCE PROCESS IS OPEN

For the 30th consecutive year, the Diocesan Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is striving to keep Catholic school education

affordable for Catholic families who desire it for their children but who may need some financial assistance to make that

dream a reality. Thanks to the ongoing and genuine commitment of The Most Reverend Mark Brennan to the Catholic

schools in our Diocese, funds have, once again, been allocated for distribution to Catholic families in need of financial

    assistance.

Applying for TAP through FACTS is easy and affordable. You are encouraged to apply if your child is already enrolled or

has been accepted by one of the Catholic schools in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston for the 2021-2022 school year.

Who is eligible? Any Catholic student accepted for the 2021-2022 school year in any Diocesan Catholic school (PK thru

grade 12) and who belongs to a parish included on the drop-down list as part of the on-line application is eligible.

Determinations are based upon a family's degree of need relative to all other applicants.

How do I apply? Applications are made on-line. Go to www.factsmgt.com, click on “Grant & Aid Assessment” and log in. If

you do not have Internet access, contact your school office for assistance.

Cost? The application fee is $35. The Diocese will pay $17.50 and families pay the other $17.50.

Grants: Diocesan grants for Catholic families who have completed their applications and show financial need will receive

up to 50% of the child’s tuition.

Phase I Deadline In order to receive notification in late May, applications (including all required

April 30, 2021 documentation and payment of the fee) are to be received by FACTS by April 30, 2021.

Phase I is intended for families with children currently enrolled or already accepted for the 2021-2022 school year in any

Catholic school in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.

Phase II Deadline In order to receive notification in early September, all applications for 2021-2022 (including

August 14, 2021 all required documentation and payment of the fee) MUST be RECEIVED by FACTS no later

than August 14, 2021. This is a firm deadline. Phase II is intended for families new to the school or who have had a life-

changing event (i.e. birth, death, loss of job, major illness). If an application was submitted during Phase I, please contact

the school. Please do NOT submit a second application.

Note 1: No assistance will be available from the Diocese or from any school unless:

    1. an application is completed in full (ALL questions answered) and submitted

    2. all required documentation is provided, AND

    3. the family portion ($17.50) of the application fee is paid by the deadline.

Note 2: ONLY ONE APPLICATION PER FAMILY should be submitted per school year. If you made an error or had a life

event change, please do NOT submit a second application. Contact your principal and your application can be updated by

    FACTS.

Questions? If you have questions, please contact the principal of your school.

PASTOR'S RETREAT This Monday, I will be travelling to Kiawah Island, SC for 10 days of retreat. Monsignor Frederick P. Annie, my seminary classmate, has graciously agreed to come here for the Masses on January 16-17. There will be plenty of silence and solitude at Kiawah, surrounded by the beauty of the ocean. My good (44 years!) friend, Father Terry Bradshaw, of the Archdiocese of Louisville, will be with me for meals, Mass and prayer each day. You all will travel along in my heart and I will look forward to returning for the weekend of January 23-24. Thank you for enabling me to take this time away to drink deeply of God's Spirit! Parents Prayer for Vocations Gracious and loving God you have blessed us with the privilege of becoming Parents. We ask that you provide us with all that we need in accepting this awesome responsibility. We pray that we will be open to your spirit who is our source of strength as we witness to our children your love for each of them and your desire for them to be happy and to live a full life. We ask your help so we may guide and encourage our children to believe that they each have a special calling and to use their gifts and talents for others. We pray, Heavenly Father, that our children will discover and respond enthusiastically to your desire for them whether it be to the vocation of single, married, ordained or consecrated life. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus through the grace of the Holy Spirit.

    from Missy Mowrer:
