Dear Parishioners:

Spiritual Communion. What is a spiritual communion? During this covid-19 pandemic, when the faithful are unable to physically attend Mass and receive communion, the Church has encouraged us to make a spiritual communion. But some have asked me if it is as good as the sacrament? Is it a true substitute? Is it anything more than a prayer? Spiritual communion has been around for many centuries. It has been used where sacramental communion is not possible. For example in countries where Catholicism is not allowed to be practiced and in parishes where there is no priest the practice is often the only thing possible. Under other circumstances such as imprisonment, necessary obligations (like caring for a sick family member), military obligations, marriages unable to be blessed in the church, etc., the faithful are encouraged to make a spiritual communion. War, plagues, and natural disasters are also times when spiritual communion has been the only option. Yet, there is another group who is also encouraged to make spiritual communions. They are the people who receive sacramental communion on a regular basis. They are encouraged to make this conscious act of desire to be one with Christ. Communion should never be just a routine thing. St. Thomas Aquinas defined a spiritual communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament and a loving embrace as though we had already received him.” St. Teresa of Avila wrote that by spiritual communion “the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you.” The desire to attain God, and for God to live in us is the ultimate goal of a faithful disciple whether we are able to physically receive communion or not. In 1983, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the faith declared that all the effects of Holy Communion can be received through spiritual communion. Thus, it is not a substitute for communion or simply a prayer, but rather an essential part of any worthy communion. How do you make a spiritual communion? There is no set prayer. There are many available or you can create your own. I offer the following from St. Alphonse Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above all things and I desire Thee in my soul. Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though Thou wert already there, I embrace Thee and unite myself wholly to Thee; permit not that I should be separated from Thee. Amen.

Pray it frequently during this pandemic and even after it is over. Ask the Lord to increase your desire to be one with him in all things. If you do so, the power of the Eucharist will remain in you and grow stronger.

Happy Easter. On another note, I wish you all a Happy Easter. The first disciples found new life in the midst of sorrow and pain. The joy of Easter was felt by those who knew the pain of Good Friday. In light of the covid-19, may we too come to see what they saw and be filled with joy. Fr. Jeff

SCHOOL NEWS! SCHOOL CLOSED Here is what Blessed Sacrament is doing to allow you to practice your faith as fully as possible during this crisis.

First of all, there will be no public masses until further notice. Everyone has a dispensation from the weekly obligation to attend Mass. There will be no daily Masses for the public. Mass at Blessed Sacrament can be viewed online - there will be a link on the website. We will tape the Saturday evening Mass "Sine Populo" (without people) and it will be available on Sunday morning. You can make a spiritual communion. You can also call the parish for all other spiritual and sacramental needs.

The parish is not closed - questions can be directed to the parish office at 217-528-7521. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.

Adoration Chapel will remain open and you are encouraged to come and pray. The public hours will remain 5 AM to 10 PM. Please remember that the Chapel is for private prayer. We ask that you not pray out loud or in a way that distracts another person trying to pray privately.

Holy water is available in the dispenser in the chapel. Please bring your own container to take it home. If you are taking large amounts, please see one of the priests to have them bless your water. Parish Penance Services have been cancelled, but we will be offering confessions in the confessional off the chapel, every day, Monday through Friday, from noon to 1 PM and Saturday 3-4pm Confessionals are being sanitized daily.

Visit the parish website at www.bsps.org. This is the best way to know what is going on in the parish.

The parish depends on your stewardship and generosity in order to bring sacraments and spiritual services to you. With everything severely curtailed, our finances have suffered. Please remember to mail in your contribution or donate online through the secure link below. This will help us meet our obligations. Call the parish office to sign up for ACH (automatic contributions). Many parishioners are also suffering financially from this crisis.

A donation to H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People in Emergencies), formerly known as St. Vincent de Paul, will let our parish reach out to them.
