Happy Advent!

We got an early Christmas present!

You have often heard me say that many people’s theology comes from their art. This keeps them from envisioning simple things that are so clear in the bible such as the many women present at the Last Supper and on Pentecost, imaging our God (and angels) as feminine as well as masculine, and so forth. Our Holy Trinity icon by Sr. M Helen Weier, OSC depicts the divine feminine. Even the color of skin in so much art gives people the impression that Jesus was a blonde haired blue eyed being rather than the middle-Eastern man that he was. The Finance Council has heard me talk about the need for us to have good art and that if we found some we should buy it. Well recently we have had the good fortune of getting two prints from Janet MacKenzie. One is her famous picture entitled Jesus of the People. In this picture Jesus has darker features. He does not belong to any one race or nation. As the Scriptures say, in Christ there is no male or female, Jew or Greek, slave or free. Another print we have acquired is “The Magi”. So many people think of magi as the three kings, even though the word kings is never mentioned in the bible. The magi were astronomers, seekers of wisdom. Did only men seek wisdom? So this painting depicts two women and a man, definitely with Asian features coming to visit Mary and the child Jesus. It is a striking print both for its originality and its power. Recently I was at a fundraiser where I saw the most beautiful picture of Mary Magdalen, the Apostle to the Apostles, as Hippolytus called her. It depicts Mary Magdalen after Jesus has revealed himself to her at the empty tomb and commanded her to go tell the disciples, “I am Risen.” Mary Magdalen is seen announcing this good news to Peter and his wife, Mary, Martha and Lazarus, James and John, Bartimaeus and others. Great biblical theology! There was a print of this at the fundraiser for $300. I thought we should get it. But then another attendee said, “No, get the original. It is so much nicer.” When I left that evening all I had was an email address of the sculptor. It turns out the sculpture is the work of Sr. Margaret (Peggie) Beaudette. I wrote her and got no reply so I wrote again. This was her reply:

Dear Father, I never received your email, but I surely would like to talk to you. Yes, I could order a copy of the Mary Magdalen relief. It is two feet high by three feet long, 1/2 inch thick and made of resin re-enforced with fiberglass. It is painted to look like bronze and sells for $9000.00. My cell phone is xxx-xxxx. I look forward to hearing from you. Sr. Margaret ( Peggie ) Beaudette. Well, imagine my dismay when I saw the price tag. Not even a chance for a church discount! We could never afford that. But then the woman who commissioned the work, Rita Houlihan emailed me. She had been talking to Sr. Peggie and informed me that Sr. Peggie had added an extra ‘0’ to the price. It was not $9000 but only $900. I was so excited I couldn’t wait to buy it. Then I received another email from Sr. Peggie: Father, you received my email, I assume. There is an anonymous donor. Send me your address so I can send you the relief. About three to four weeks’ time needed. Thanks, Sr. Margaret Was I reading this correctly? Someone donated this marvelous piece of art to our parish? I called (continued on p. 3)
