My dear parishioners, Last week, as I have done for the last nine years, I went to Franciscan University of Steubenville for the annual Priests, Deacons, Seminarians Retreat (but I real-ly see it as a conference). The theme this year was “United” and many of the talks reflected this theme. We were privileged to have Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Devel-opment at the Vatican give the first presentation. Most of us were moved by the humility of this man. His talk focused on the need for unity within the Church and that unity must be rooted in Jesus Christ.

Other speakers we had were Dr. Mary Healy (I’ve read several of her books), Dr. Andy Minto, An-dres Arango, Deacon Ralph Poyo and Fr. David Pivon-ka. Fr. Pivonka’s talks are always inspiring to me be-cause he understands the struggles of priests and inte-grates those struggles with the spiritual life. He stressed that Jesus needs to be the center of all we do, and not just another part of what we do. He said we can become schizophrenic if Jesus is not the center. Jesus demands of us an undivided heart and a man with a divided heart is inconsistent. A man with a divided heart is con-sumed with what other people think of us. A priest who is motivated by comfort, entertainment, food, etc. is un-happy and will not commit to anything; he will be un-clear of his identity. Since he does not know who he is, he is incapable of making decisions. A priest must trust in God, but if he does not trust God, he will never be single hearted for Him. Ultimately, a priest must give his whole heart to God if he is going to be an authentic witness of the Gospel.

My highlight for the week though was Tuesday evening during our Holy Hour. Praying before our Eu-charistic Lord is always a blessing, but the music chosen and sung by Bob Rice and his band, Steubenville Wor-ship, was perfect for that evening. Many of the others with me agreed on the power of that night, as we sung in one voice adoring our Lord. Some of the songs we heard that night are new such as Reckless Love by Cory Ashbury and Tremble by Mosaic MSC. The whole week was a time of praise and renewal. God bless,

Fr. O’Connor

Padre O’Connor

EVENTS AROUND THE PARISH...

Heart’s Home A Catholic Volunteer Program Next weekend Fr. Alex Morard, will be with us at all Masses, to talk to us about Heart’s Home. The volunteers reach out to the lonely and regularly visit people in their local community, orphanages, jails, shelters, and nursing homes. They welcome any-one knocking at the door and organize a wide range of cultural and educational activities. They act as a link between the people in need and the appropriate re-sources such as public assistance and rehabilitation centers. Standing at the foot of the Crucified Jesus with Mary and John, they are called to be imitators of their compassion and to intercede for humankind.

Quote from a Saint… “With all the strength of my soul I urge you young people to approach the Communion table as often as you can. Feed on this bread of angels whence you will draw all the energy you need to ght inner battles. Because true happiness, dear friends, does not consist in the pleasures of the world or in earth-ly things, but in peace of conscience, which we have only if we are pure in heart and mind.” Pier Giorgio Frassati [1901 — 1925]

Pier Giorgio Frassati [1901 — 1925]
