My dear parishioners, Inserted in this week’s bulletin is a copy of last fiscal year’s financial statement, which was recently submitted to the Diocese of Brooklyn. The fiscal year for the diocese and all the parishes is September 1 through August 31. Last year, when I presented to you the report for 2013 -2014, we have a deficit of $389,000. This past year, we made great progress but we still had a deficit of $24,301. I was hoping for a smaller deficit, but the last two weeks of August our investments took a hit when the market went down. We lost a bit of money, which we have since recuperated, but that is not reflected in the financial report you received this weekend. It is still a tremen-dous turn around and we are continuing to make ad-justments to insure the financial viability of our par-ish. Two of the areas we saved the most money last year was in salaries and in major repairs. In salaries alone, we saved $143,000 compared to the previous year. We had many major repairs and we still have more to do. As anyone who owns a home knows, you are never done. Our total for church repairs was $69,357; just over $30,000 was towards the new wheelchair ramp. The rest was towards the new camera system, the lighting outside of the church, new locks and other minor repairs. Rectory repairs were totaled at $18,032, which included the renovation of the secre-tary’s office, camera installation, new locks and the lighting around the rectory. Another $41,769 went towards the school building, which included air con-ditioner repairs, new locks, outside lighting, and about $25,000 in repairs to the boiler and heating system. The biggest expense continues to be salaries and benefits and that is the norm. One item I would like to highlight is that there was a significant in-crease in the money received from the candles for the shrines. I attribute that to the installation of the cam-eras and the changing of the locks in the church. The week after the cameras and locks were installed, the weekly donations to the shrines doubled and some weeks tripled. I think you know what I am saying. I am grateful to all of you for your generosity and your love for our parish. We are growing stronger, not just financially, but also spiritually. Christmas Gifts for “Hour Children” and the “St. John’s Home for Boys”
Please help make Christmas a little brighter for a needy person this year. We will once again be collecting gifts for St. John’s Home for Boys and Hour Children. Hour Chil-dren helps the families of women who were recently incarcerated. St. John’s Home is a residence for boys from troubled families. Gift tags are in baskets on the altar and in the back of the church. The gifts will be picked up today, Decem-ber 20th. St. Mary’s has been very generous in past years and it has been greatly appreciated. May God bless you for your generosity.
