In a career spanning six decades, NEA Jazz Master/saxophonist Jimmy Heath has made history with Miles Davis, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd, Cal Tjader and dozens more. A prolific compos-er, many of Jimmy’s 125+ tunes have become jazz standards, recorded by everyone under the sun. Meanwhile Albert “Tootie” Heath blazed his own trail, playing drums for jazz icons from John Coltrane to Art Farmer and Kenny Barron. Together with brother Percy on bass, the Heath Brothers put out a string of albums and earned a reputa-tion as one of the first families of jazz.

Up until 1975, Percy had been busy with the Modern Jazz Quartet, but with the group in “retirement” (temporarily as it turned out), all three brothers were

free to join forces. Originally a quartet with pianist Stanley Cowell, but ex-panding after the addition of guitarist Tony Purrone and Jimmy’s son Mtume on percussion, the band recorded for Strata East (1975), four albums for Columbia Records, and two for Island Records. Tootie Heath left the group early on and was replaced by Akira Tana, although he came back for the final 1983 record. Although the Heath Brothers’ music was essentially hard bop, there were occasional departures into jazzy R&B on isolated selections.

While Percy passed away in 2005, Jimmy and Tootie proudly carry on this ensemble’s rich history. n

Partnered up with guitarist/producer Jordan Peters, the Brooklyn based proj-ect is introducing their debut album self titled RAT HABITAT Pt.1. This concept album blends electronica, soul, hip-hop, indie rock, sprinkled with a hint of Haitian Swag and explores what it means to be a 20-30 something “RAT” looking for love and stability while deal-ing with rejection and the complexities of family dynamics. ingeniously ar-ranged mix of original old school soul and funk songs. n

After a long journey, which brought her all the way from Dubai to South India to Boston, and now New York, vo-calist and songwriter, Shilpa Ananth continues to seek the perfect balance between all her different worlds. Her music is a blend of her Indian roots, with flavorful Jazz chords, and Hip Hop styled beats, and she sings in four lan-guages - Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, and English. Her original music represents at least two languages on each track, usually English mixed with her native tongue, Tamil.

Shilpa’s soulful voice feels like butter, as she strives to stay true to her past and present musical influences - A.R Rah-man and Robert Glasper- and build a bridge between the music from the East and West.

She is currently working on her five-song EP, titled Why Not?, which will be released in September 2014. n

Pianist Alex Brown’s reputation contin-ues expanding through his notable per-formances with everyone from innovative saxophonist Miguel Zenón to the legend-ary Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Cen-ter Jazz Orchestra. A member of Paquito D’Rivera’s ensemble since 2007, shared in that ensemble’s 2010 GRAMMY® nomi-nation for D’Rivera’s album, Jazz-Clazz. Of Brown’s 2010 debut CD with his own en-semble, Pianist (Sunnyside), DownBeat magazine proclaimed it “A really fine record that leaves you wanting more.” This just a year after his 2009 graduation with a Bach-elor of Music from New England Conser-vatory where he studied with Danilo Pérez

and Charlie Banacos, among others. Due to his diverse influences, Classical, rhythm & blues, hip-hop, Afro-Caribbean and Bra-zilian styles all co-mingle – naturally and in-fectiously – in Brown’s music. Doubtlessly, this versatility contributed to his collecting an array of student and young composer awards from ASCAP, DownBeat magazine and BMI, propelling him towards a profes-sional career. Now in Alex Brown’s rear-view mirror are appearances at top jazz venues and festivals, including: the Blue Note in New York (and Tokyo), the Telluride Jazz Celebration and Israel’s Red Sea Jazz Festival, among others. n

Youngjoo Song is one of Korea’s lead-ing jazz pianists. After graduating Berk-lee College of Music and Manhattan School of Music, she was able to ex-ponentially climb Korea’s Jazz charts in record sales and popularity where she then had multiple opportunities to per-form with some of the most prominent artists from both Korea and the US.

Her prompt escalation in the jazz world enabled her to record eight albums with distinguished labels such as EMI, Warner and Sony of which Free to Fly

was nominated for the Korean Music award in 2009, and Love Never Fails which won Korea’s “Best Jazz Album” in 2010. Her new album Tale of a City won the “Best Jazz Performance” at the 2012 Korean Music Award. Young joo Song recorded and performed with some of the most prominent jazz mu-sicians; including Steve Wilson, Mark Turner, Seamus Blake, Gretchen Par-lato, Kendrick Scott, Marcus Gilmore, Vicente Archer, Rogerio Boccato. n

History has produced its share of great artists and great people—John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie was both. As a per-former, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration. As a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces, and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues and com-patriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work.

For Dizzy Gillespie, playing in a small combo was never enough. His artistry compelled him to seek and to create larger ensembles because as a com-poser and arranger, a big band was the ultimate vehicle for self-expression. Given that the majority of his career took place after 1950 when the big band era was over, it’s especially no-table that Dizzy Gillespie continued to create brilliant music using the grand-scale formats of jazz big band and or-chestra right up to the end of his life in 1993.

The Dizzy Gillespie™ Big Band and Alumni All-Star group (small group) is the direct descendant of these ven-tures, and happily, the tradition lives on, nurtured by Gillespie alumni and executive director, producer, and bass-ist John Lee.

The Big Band and the Alumni All-Stars feature some of Dizzy’s closest com-patriots: senior statesmen and NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath and vet-eran Gillespie alumni Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Davis, Lewis Nash, and musical director John Lee. All of them are band leaders, educators, and recording art-ists in their own right.

The small group debuted in 1996 while the Big Band debuted in 1998. Together they continue to delight au-diences around the world with the en-during power and freshness of Dizzy Gillespie’s music. This is the legacy the master would have wanted—and a living tribute from the many extraor-dinary musicians in this group who exemplify his style, range, and com-mitment.

The Dizzy Gillespie™ Big Band’s mu-sical home would have to be New York’s famed Blue Note Jazz Club, which was for many years Dizzy’s fa-vorite jazz club not only in New York City, but in the world. The All-Star Big Band performs there for a week every summer, and the Alumni All-Star small group celebrates Dizzy’s birthday for a week every October. n

Coulon began when vocalist extraor-dinaire Imani Uzuri asked her dear friends, Rozz Nash (former lead singer of Groove Collective and Slavic Soul Party) and Neil Coulon (former drum-mer of the Boston-based band “27”), to perform at her Blue Note show in January 2008. The soon-to-be-married couple didn’t have any songs, and had played together only once - at a friend’s wedding. Overwhelmed with plans for their own wedding in Brazil, Neil and Rozz started preparing for the planned gig just a week beforehand, co-writing a

Joe Gransden has performed world-wide and released ten CDs under his own name. Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet, Grans-den’s singing voice has been com-pared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra.

Joe is from New York City and comes from a family full of musicians. Joe’s introduction to music came early on through his father, a gifted singer and pianist. His grandfather was a trum-peter of merit, playing professionally

his whole life throughout New York and on his mother’s side was the piano vir-tuoso Carmen Cavallero.

Not long after high school, Joe was on the road as a sideman with the Tommy Dorsey Band and Glenn Miller Band. He has also performed as a sideman with Barry White, The Moody Blues, Kenny Rogers, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin and The Whispers. Eventually moving to New York City, he performed with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Chico O’Farrill. Meanwhile, Joe formed his own group, which per-formed in Brooklyn each week and in-cluded guitarist Joe Cohn and former Betty Carter bassist, Matt Hughes. The Joe Gransden Trio’s growing legion of fans in both New York and recently in Atlanta has obviously taken note. A widening schedule has found Joe per-forming at The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, South Carolina, The Museum of Art and Design in midtown Manhat-tan, Spivey Hall in Atlanta and Tehema Golf Club in Carmel, California. Joe also just released his brand new album entitled Close To My Heart which was produced by saxophone great Kenny G. The album is a collection of smooth jazz covers and originals written by Joe and Kenny. Joe has been perform-ing with Kenny G and his band around the country for the past year or so. Fel-low musicians across the country hear a talented trumpet player whose ace in the hole is a well-developed voice. But around Atlanta and New York Joe is also a well-respected human being, a nice guy who treats people fairly. He has always managed to keep every as-pect of his career and life in balance. In this tempestuous decade, Joe’s lyri-cism is like a breath of fresh air. n

In 1977, The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud, but antiquated, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrange-ments. Brass bands, early predeces-sors of jazz as we know it, would often follow the funeral procession playing somber dirges, then once the family of the deceased was out of earshot, burst into jubilant dance tunes as ca-sual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late ‘70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club decided to assemble this group as a house band, and over the course

of these early gigs, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue’s name: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Thirty-five years later, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous mu-sic machine, whose name is synony-mous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. They have revitalized the brass band in New Or-leans and around the world, progress-ing from local parties, clubs, baseball games and festivals in their early years to touring nearly constantly in the U.S. and in over 30 other countries on five continents. The Dirty Dozen have been featured guests on albums by artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Buckwheat Zydeco, Dave Matthews Band, Modest Mouse, Wide-spread Panic, and the Black Crowes. n

The imaginative rhythms of Poncho Sanchez have made him one of the most influential conga players and percussionists in Afro-Cuban jazz. In addition to recording as a soloist, Sanchez has been featured on albums by the Jazz Crusaders, Eddie Harris, Freddie Hubbard, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Dianne Reeves, Joey De-Francesco, and Terence Blanchard. Becoming a member of vibraphonist Caj Tjader’s Band in 1975, Sanchez remained with the group until Tjader’s death on May 5, 1982. By then, he had already planted the seeds for his own career as a bandleader. He recorded two solo albums -- Poncho in 1979 and Straight Ahead in 1980 -- and be-gan performing with his own group in 1980, during Tjader’s vacations. A na-tive of Laredo, Texas, Sanchez moved to Los Angeles at the age of four, where he was deeply influenced by the music he heard in the Chicano neighborhood in which he lived. Initially a guitarist, he played with a series of junior high

school and high school rhythm & blues bands. Teaching himself to play congas, he spent hours practicing to Caj Tjader, Machito, and Tito Puente records. He was also deeply influenced by the hard bop sounds of the Jazz Crusaders. Af-ter more than two decades in music, Sanchez’s efforts paid off when his al-bum, Latin Soul, received a Grammy award as Best Latin Album of 1999. Throughout the next decade, Sanchez continued to record, releasing such albums as 2000’s Soul of the Conga, 2001’s Latin Spirits, 2003’s Out of Sight!, 2005’s Do It!, 2007’s Raise Your Hand, and 2009’s hard bop-influenced Psychedelic Blues. In 2011, he paid tribute to the innovative Afro-Cuban re-cordings of Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo by teaming up with trumpeter Terence Blanchard for Chano y Dizzy! Sanchez followed it up with a concert set entitled with Live in Hollywood, with his Latin Jazz Band. - Craig Harris, All Music Guide n

Ever since he started taking harmonica solos in the mid-’50s, Toots Thielemans has been without any close competition on his instrument, at least until Hendrik Meurkens arrived on the scene. Born in Germany to Dutch parents, Meurkens began as a vibraphonist, not playing harmonica until he heard Thielemans when he was 19. He traveled to the U.S. to study at Berklee and spent time in Brazil in the early ‘80s, during which he immersed himself in Brazilian jazz. Back in Berlin, Meurkens worked in the stu-dios, but also recorded with the Danish Radio Orchestra and had his own jazz

BABY DO BRASILBaby do Brasil is considered one of the biggest Brazilian singers, and a music leg-end who has been revolutionizing the his-tory of the Popular Brazilian Music (MPB). Baby is famous for her soft, indescribable and unique voice, and strong rhythmic versatility not only in her ballads but also in her electric songs. The success of her lyrics, like in “Sem Pecado e Sem Juízo”, “Cósmica”, “Telúrica” among many other ones, and interpretations of other artist’s songs like in “Menino do Rio” (Caetano Veloso), “Brasileirinho” (Waldir Azevedo), “Todo Dia Era Dia de Índio” (Jorge Ben Jor), among others, put her on the main-stream audience nationally and interna-tionally. She deservingly earned the rec-ognition of specialized critics.

After her performance in LA, she was fea-tured in The Los Angeles Times saying that “She has the fury and the fire of the Latin Janis Joplin”.

Her recent work “Baby Sucessos”, a proj-ect idealized and directed by her son Pe-dro Baby, a successful guitarist and com-poser himself, premiered at the Jockey Club Brasileiro by the end of 2012 in front of an estimated crowd of 5000 people. Since then, Baby has been selling out tickets in the biggest venues in the coun-try, resulting in the making of her much-awaited CD and DVD. For the enjoyment and happiness of her fans, we will finally have the new CD and DVD of Baby do Brasil in the main stores of Brazil and of the world by the second half of 2014. n

WAYNA

GRAMMY®-nominated, Ethiopian-born, singer/songwriter, Wayna has a voice as pure as it is passionate. Stevie Wonder says “she’s incredible.” Essence Maga-zine says “Wayna is one to watch,” and Billboard Magazine calls her “a stand out on the indie front.” With two Billboard chart-topping singles from her sopho-more LP, Higher Ground, and a coveted Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance Category for her remake, “Lovin You (Music)” featuring Ko-kayi, Wayna’s star is on the rise.

“The Expats” is the third and latest LP from this innovative artist. The album, which The Washington Post calls “bril-liant,” represents a new and daring de-parture from her previous work. Drawing from diverse cultural influences, Wayna and her Toronto-based backing band cre-ate a unique blend of African and Reggae-inspired soul, fused with classic and alter-native rock -- Sade and the Police meets Lauryn Hill and Radiohead.

“I’ve always been a bit of an Expat,” says Wayna “feeling different culturally from most of the people around me. For years, I tried to minimize those differences, but one day, I realized they make me who I am. I want this album to be about explor-ing and expressing all the ways in which I and every one of us are unique, cultur-ally or otherwise, and to celebrate those differences unapologetically.” We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” n

One of the greatest guitarists in jazz, Pat Martino had suffered a severe brain aneurysm and underwent sur-gery after being told that his condition could be terminal. After his opera-tions he could remember nothing. He barely recognized his parents, and had no memory of his guitar or his career. He remembers feeling as if he had been “...dropped cold, empty, neutral, cleansed…naked.”

In the following months, Martino made a remarkable recovery. Through inten-sive study of his own historic record-ings, with the help of computer tech-nology, Pat managed to reverse his memory loss and return to form on his instrument. His past recordings even-tually become “an old friend, a spiritual experience which remained beautiful and honest.” This recovery fits in per-

fectly with Pat’s illustrious personal his-tory. Since playing his first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut-wrenching performances, he rep-resents the best not just in jazz, but in music. He embodies thoughtful energy and soul.

Today, Martino lives in Philadelphia and continues to grow as a musician. As The New York Times noted, “Mr. Martino is back and he is plotting new musical directions, adding more layers to his myth.” His experiments with gui-tar synthesizers are taking him in the direction of orchestral arrangements and they promise groundbreaking pos-sibilities. n

Grammy-winner WALLACE RONEY was heralded as an “improviser who loves complicated almost mathemati-cal lines and who performs with cat-like grace” by The New York Times. Roney - a trumpeter, composer, and bandleader - is one of the most excit-ing and innovative musicians on the creative music scene. His consummate artistry and eagerness to explore and transcend musical boundaries have led him to collaborate with Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Jay McShann, David Murray, and McCoy Tyner; as well as to be featured as a so-loist with Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rol-lins, Curtis Fuller, Stevie Wonder, Ran-dy Weston, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Dizzy Gillespie, to name a few.

Wallace was mentored by Miles Davis after Miles heard him in 1983 at his birthday gala performance in Carnegie Hall. Their association peaked when Miles chose Wallace to share the stage at his historic performance in Montreux in 1991. After Davis died, Herbie Han-cock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Roney banded together and toured the world in tribute.

Praised by Time magazine for his “am-ber tone and patient and considered phrasing,” Roney has recorded over a dozen albums as a leader. Each recording illuminates the dynamic trumpeter’s keen compositional chops and versatility as a bandleader and composer. n

Harvey Mason is among the most re-corded and in-demand drummers of all-time. A legendary, multi-GRAM-MY® nominated session drummer, producer, composer & recording art-ist, he has worked with a pantheon of musical giants, including Barbra Strei-sand, James Brown, Herbie Hancock, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bjork, Carlos Santana, Mi-chael Jackson, John Legend, Seal, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has composed and written songs re-corded by artists ranging from Nancy Wilson and Mary J. Blige to The Notori-ous B.I.G., Lupe Fiasco, Nelly/P. Diddy and T.I.

In the ’70s and ’80s, Harvey Mason was king, working on Donald Byrd’s commercial breakthrough album Black Byrd and a series of successful cross-over albums for Blue Note Records. This led to his seminal work on Her-bie Hancock’s jazz masterpiece Head Hunters (1974), which featured the hit “Chameleon” (co-composed by Ma-son) and Mason’s own arrangement of Hancock’s “Watermelon Man.”

Mason’s precision playing has graced movies for such renowned composers as Michael Giacchino (Cars 2, Mission Impossible 1, 2, 3 & 4, Up , Star Trek,

Speed Racer), Michel Colombier (Prince’s Purple Rain), Michel Legrand, Miles Davis’ (Dingo), Dave Grusin (Three Days of the Condor, The Fabulous Baker Boys and On Golden Pond), John Williams (Hook), and Lalo Schifrin (Rush Hour 1,2 & 3 and The Enforcer), Harvey Mason (Dreamgirls, Get On Up) to name only a few.

Mason is also a founding member of Four-play, and he continues to flex his writing, playing, arranging and production skills with partners Bob James, Nathan East and Chuck Loeb.

Chameleon, Mason’s April 29, 2014 solo debut for Concord Records and 10th solo project overall, adds one more remark-able chapter to his legacy. A blend of R&B, urban and cutting-edge jazz, Cha-meleon takes its inspiration from the title track, which Mason co-wrote with Herbie Hancock, and is a knowing nod to Mason himself, aptly dubbed the “Chameleon” for his uncanny ability to perform so many styles of music. The album updates classic tracks that Mason either wrote or actually played on, such as Hancock’s “Chame-leon,” Grover Washington’s “Black Frost,” Patrice Rushen’s “Before the Dawn,” Don-ald Byrd’s “Places and Spaces” and Ma-son’s own “Either Way.” Look for Mason to hit the road with his new band Chameleon to support his Concord release. n
