Spaces on board

Climbing on board a sailing boat for the first time will be like discovering a new world where things have strange names. No worries, you will soon feel at home and find all what you are used to.

There is a “dinette” (photo 1) inside the boat, i.e. the sitting room with a couch and one or more tables where you can dine. Each boat has cabins (photo 2), i.e. rooms with one or more beds (double, single or bunk beds), depending on the size of the boat. Any kitchen on board? Of course! The boat (photo 3) is equipped with a fridge, hob and oven. A bit smaller but equally practical are toilets on board which can be one or two, equipped with a washbasin and a shower (you will see how to use them on p.7).

Boat etiquette: the dos and dontsTips to appreciate the peculiarities of a vacation on a sailing boat

1) THIS BOAT IS NOT A HOTELBoats are not a hotel or a cruise ship. Space is always a big issue, so make others feel at home when interacting (e.g. where to stop for a dip) or during daily activities (e.g. what to eat for dinner).

2) NO HIGH HEELS OR HARD SOLES SHOES ON BOARDWearing shoes that might damage the boat and harm you on the boat and tender is a big no no. Do use boat shoes or the like (e.g. white-sole sneakers), or just enjoy walking barefoot.

3) SMOKINGSmoking on board is only allowed at the captain’s discretion and in specific areas on deck to safeguard the environment and respect other crew members. Do not throw cigarette butts in the sea!

4) DO NOT WASTE WATERFresh water on board is a precious asset; do not waste it.

5) THE UNKNOWN PANTRY!A small room or cupboard in which food and drinks are kept and is usually shared by an expense sharing crew (about 8-10 € per day).

7

You can generally charge your smartphone or your electronic devices when the boat stops at the harbour, as battery is charged during navigation to supply electric current; 12 Volt for the fridge and on-board equipment. Do bring a power adapter for cigarette lighters on board.

Wi-fi is provided on many boats. Alternatively when sailing along the coast, you may be connected if you have a Wi-Fi system on your smartphone. 3G networks are often not available at sea.

You can bring your children on board even if it is wisely believed this holiday is not suitable for kids. Many boats are in fact well equipped to accommodate kids as long as you abide by the security measures indicated by the captain.

Toilets on board have a peculiar exhaust system and are equipped with manual or electrical pumps to circulate the water, eliminating the waste outside. Tubes are narrow for safety reasons; do not throw unsuitable paper and objects that may obstruct them.

You should know that

Packing Smart and Travelling LightUse soft-sided bags; trolleys are unnecessarily bulky on board

LIGHT JACKET AND SWEATSHIRT

... and of course SOLAR SHIELD, SUN GLASSES,

HAT AND BEACH TOWEL

Health Benefits of Sailing Holidays...

The sun makes us feel good; it increases the production of serotonin and vitamin D which improves our mood and reduces stress. Before I forget, it also helps us to do away with the slight blemishes of the skin!

Sea water helps us return to our true nature made 75% of water, gives us that relaxing feeling and makes us feel more lively and dynamic. Moreover blue colour is known to have calming effects.

Sea salt has antiseptic, bactericidal and healing properties. It is also known since ancient times as an important source of magnesium, with anti-cancer effects.

The wind has a great regenerating power because it contains all the elements of sea water by increasing its beneficial power (e.g. sodium chloride, alkaline bromides and iodine).

Tips and tricks to improve your stay your cruise

1. Work with the rest of the crew and the captain.2. Be flexible, the itinerary may sometimes be subject to change.3. Experience the sweetness of doing nothing!4. Just bring a few things.

IT IS NOT AFFORDABLEThere are various accessible boat holiday offers. The average cost is 70 euro per day, not less than a stay in a big European capital.

I CANNOT TRAVEL BECAUSE I DON’T OWN A BOAT LICENSEA boat holiday with Bluewago always includes an experienced captain on board (the skipper) who welcomes you upon boarding and guides you throughout the itinerary of the cruise.

IT IS BORING!Swimming, snorkelling, water games, sup and fishing trips are just some of your boat holiday activities. Being bored is in short impossible:-), but if you want to experience the sweetness of doing nothing, just lie in the sun and relax while observing stretches of unspoiled coastline and breath-taking sunsets.

SOLO, GROUP AND COUPLE TRAVELA boat holiday is suitable for all, simply choose the type of boat and the navigation area that most suits your needs and you will live an unforgettable experience!

4 common places and how to get rid of themMany clichés to be dispelled about boat holidays

14

You can’t wait to start your boat holiday and you are anxious because it is your very first time?

15

Jokes aside, the captain (skipper) will make sure you have a memorable holiday in safety conditions during navigation, and ensure your needs are met. His decisions are in any case always unquestionable as he is responsible for the boat and the crew.

How long will it take?

Can’t we get off the boat at the harbour before mooring, so I don’t get wet in the tender?

I beg your pardon, why not move the sail? I can’t get a tan!

Why not use the engine to get there earlier?

Why not straighten the boat, it’s so uncomfortable?

Questions you should never ask the captain

16

Go green during your holiday become nature’s friend

Stop being a water waster, it is a precious and limited resource on a boat and is subject to adequate supply.

Use natural or eco-friendly detergents.

Limit the impact of noise and light pollution, respect nature along the coast including the inhabitants of the sea.

Optimise your pantry replenishment: choose products without packaging, avoid excessively using bottled water and plastic dishes, buy supplies at the harbours where you stop.

No garbage should go overboard and collect plastic packaging, glass jars and paper separately.

If you sight marine mammals, do not dive into water or give them food.

Do not collect sand and souvenirs from the sea, such as starfish or seahorses.

Fishing using tools and gears allowed to protect the surrounding marine flora and fauna.

17

The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion;

it is the ‘Living Infinite’Jules Verne
