Prop,,!gationThere are three basic methods of startingor 'propagating' plants. They are seed gennination, rooting stem cuttings~(Cloning) and tissue culture. Tissue culture is an advanced fom1of celldivision. We will concentrate on the simpler,

more popular methods.

Rockwool is the most popular medium for germinating seeds hydroponically. Seeds or cuttings are insertedin small

rockwool cubes. The slabs of cubes are then laid in a standardplastic nursery tray with a clear hmnidity dome placed

over top. Once tl1eseeds have sproutedthe rockwool cubes are easilybroken off and inserted in larger cubes, theirhome untilharvest.

Stem cuttings ttom these types of plants can be rooted in seven to fourteen days, producing a plant that is an exact

genetic duplicationof the original or 'mother' plant. Plants started in this way will mature much sooner than ones

startedttom seed, saving valuable time and producing shorter,bushier plants.

Depending on the type of plant, each mother could produce tens, or even hundreds of identicaloffSplingevery couple

of months. Asexual propagation is an invaluabletool used for many commercial greenhouse crops. as well as for

hobby gardens.
