Executive Director’s Report

28TH ANNIVERSARY HOFFMANN AWARDS DINNER

One hundred and thirty school board members, administrators and guests attended the 28th Anniversary Hoffmann Awards Celebration, including representatives from our sponsors. The dinner began with music by a Middle School Jazz Band and Chorus from Alum Rock.

Our Co-Hosts, NBC’s Damian Trujillo and Sobrato High School (Morgan Hill) Junior Jennifer Gonzalez began their remarks with a remembrance of former County Superintendent Glenn Hoffmann (1967-84), for whom the awards are named. They exemplify Dr. Hoffmann’s strong belief in educational leadership as the key factor in educational reform. They provide recognition for successful school programs that have a significant impact on student success in our county.

The evening’s focus was the celebration of four exemplary district programs, the recipients of the 2012 Hoffmann Awards. Each award winner presented a video, produced by the SCCOE, highlighting their program.

Gilroy Unified’s “Elementary Engagement and Achievement Initiative” is a district wide initiative aimed at providing a common instructional model, including an infusion of technology, at all of their elementary schools. Milpitas School District’s “Literacy Support Specialist (LSS) Program” provides direct reading intervention services to targeted, at-risk students within the regular classroom context; and job-embedded professional development in literacy for classroom teachers. Mountain View/Los Altos High School District’s “LUCHA and El Cafecito” programs seek to train, provide information and empower families to be strong effective advocates for their students. East Side Union High School District’s “Teacher Instructed Programs on Saturday (TIPS)” – a program founded at Yerba Buena High School, provides at-risk and needy students with an opportunity for additional support, intervention and enrichment services. As a special tribute, TIPS was awarded the 2012 Kristi Porter Award for receiving the highest score on the award rubric.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION – B-MAD!

As you saw in a recent CSBA email from CSBA Director Dana Tom (Palo Alto Unified), the replacement for CSBA’s Legislative Action Conference is the new Board Member Action Day, also known as B-MAD. Board Member Action Day will take place on Friday, June 1, 2012. A complimentary webcast of important information is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 10:00 am 12:30 pm in the Saratoga Room at the SCCOE. B-MAD about the crises facing California’s school children, BMOTIVATED to advocate with us on their behalf and GO LOCAL! The current and future fiscal solvency of our schools depends on highly motivated partnerships and we are both motivated and passionate about increasing funding and improving the school experience and educational quality for California's public schoolchildren. CSBA is unveiling its new Board Member Action Day, or B-MAD, on June 1. This newly revamped legislative action effort will focus on going local, and is your opportunity to work with CSBA to make a difference. CSBA will provide the resources while you give the issues a face and voice via direct meetings with your legislative members at their district offices in your neighborhood. Join fellow board members across the state on Friday, June 1, for meetings with state Senators and Assembly Members in their local district offices. CSBA will schedule your district meetings with legislators and we need your commitment now. Register today to ensure your meeting with your state representatives and sign-up for the accompanying webcast that will provide you with all the information and tools you need to successfully advocate for public education. If you can participate, please join us on May 30 at the Santa Clara County Office of Education to view the webcast together and then meet in teams to prepare for the visits to legislators on June 1. Be sure to register with the link above and let me ([email protected]) know if you'll join us at the SCCOE on May 30.

Cont.’d from first page): President’s Column In January, our special guest speaker, Preston Smith, CAO of Rocketship Education, gave us an insight into the way Rocketship schools are stepping out of the traditional “box” and using innovative means to help their students achieve the results needed to succeed. A forum, “The Revolution of Electron-based instruction” co-hosted by the San Mateo and Santa Clara County School Boards Associations in February, turned out to be a very useful and enlightening morning. Thanks to Dana Tom (Palo Alto Unified) for helping to put together a panel that was very well informed on the current and future impact of technology in our schools.

Santa Clara County Superintendent, Dr. Charles Weis, reported on the state of the schools in Santa Clara County at our meeting in March, where a great deal of the focus is on closing the achievement gap by the year 2020. Also in March, our Legislative Brunch returned to Mission College where we were able to spend some quality time with our legislators. A big thanks goes to Albert Gonzalez (Santa Clara Unified) for chairing another successful brunch. The Hoffmann Awards Dinner, where we honored four programs with slide shows and cash awards, was a success again this year thanks to Danielle Cohen (Campbell), Dolores Marquez (Alum Rock), Chris Miller (Los Gatos), and VP Kathleen Sullivan (Morgan Hill Unified). Our Candidates’ Workshop is coming up on June 2nd. With Judy Hannemann (MVLA UHSD), Camille Townsend (Palo Alto Unified) and Ellen Wheeler (MVWSD) at the helm I have no doubt this will be an informative workshop for all future school board candidates. A special thanks goes to Vice-President Kathy Sullivan for procuring restaurants for the fall and Hoffmann dinners and to Treasurer Michael Gipe (Saratoga) for getting us closer to reaching our 501C3 status. I also have to thank our By-Laws Committee chaired by Camille Townsend (PAUSD) for doing a thorough job of going over our by-laws to bring them up-to-date. And of course, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish all that we do without our awesome Executive Director Rose Filicetti! If I forgot to thank anyone, please know that your efforts were very much appreciated. Have a wonderful summer! _____________________________________________________________________________

Good luck to Santa Clara Unified and Saratoga Union, which have special mail-in ballot elections in May for new or increased parcel taxes. These measures require a 67% approval from the local voters. Good luck also to Cupertino, Milpitas Unified,

Mountain View Whisman, and West Valley - Mission Community College District which have bond measures on the June ballot. SCCSBA supported these districts with the approval of resolutions at our February meeting.

Letters have been sent to Superintendents and SCCSBA Representatives for renewal of your district’s membership in SCCSBA by July 31. We offer board development services, communication, and other activities to promote public education in Santa Clara County. The Executive Board sets annual dues so that membership will remain within the reach of all districts. In keeping with this year’s budget cuts, we have voted to continue a reduction in dues by 10% for the coming year. Please continue to support SCCSBA with your dues!

Pam Parker, President 2011-12
