OWNERThe Santo Cristo co-operative of Ainzon
PRODUCTSCampo de Borja (Tinto), Garnacha Seleccion, Santo Cristo
SIZE OF THE VINEYARDSThe cooperative controls 900 hectares of vineyards, but the "Santo Cristo Seleccion" is sourced
from the best located and oldest vineyards.
LOCATION OF THE VINEYARDSThe winery is in the village of Ainzon, with vineyards running from Ainzon in the heart of the
DO south to include some fantastic high altitude sites. Just over the border from Navarra, and
only 50 miles from the Rioja region, climatic conditions here are very interesting, with warm
Mediterranean influences in summer and cool, Atlantic influences in Winter. Rainfall is low
(350 to 450mm per year), there is lots of sun, but altitudes of 350 to 700 metres mean cool, fresh
conditions.
SOILSoils are stony over iron-rich red clay on a limestone bedrock. In many places, the stones are
large and ressemble the famous galets of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
GRAPE VARIETIES100% Garnacha (Grenache)
AVERAGE AGE OF THE VINESSome young vines, many older vineyards (40 years and upwards)
AVERAGE PRODUCTIONFirst year (2008) production of this cuvée was 30 000 bottles. Second year production was
increased to 55 000 bottles. Given the great resource of old vineyards here, further increases in
production can be envisaged.
VINIFICATION AND AGEINGCool fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Ageing in vat...no use of oak. Blending between tanks
to achieve a complex balance of broad, rich old vine mouthweight with fresh, floral and mineral
aromatics on the nose.
NOTES ON THE PROPERTY This area is known for viticulture since the Middle Ages, when the land belonged to the nearby
large monastery of Veruela. The Santo Cristo coop was officially founded in 1956, and is now

one of the best in Spain, with modern equipment including state-of-the-art bottling line, cool
underground cellars, skilled winemakers and a dynamic young MD. One of the reasons it runs
so well is that although they have 900 hectares of vineyards and 700 member growers, 80% of
the vineyards belong to just 30 growers, so it has been easier to get qualitative practices into
place.
