OLE CHRIS … A LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear David:

I am sending in my renewal to Bone Yard Boats for my thirdyear after having scrutinized the Fall 2007 issue for the first ofwhat will be many times. It is really hard to put down thenewsletter when you see all of the boats available. Mycompliments to you on the newsletter and the website, and tothose who assist you in this endeavor.

In August of 2006, I took my wife to a marina in an effort tode-stress a little and look at some boats for sale. I hadspoken with a salesperson in relation to two or three boatsthat were then for sale. We had just arrived when we learnedthat there was something of a problem with one of the boats –it was bow down in the slip and was taking on water, so ofcourse the salesperson said he would understand if we wantedto skip that one. There was a sump pump grinding away withthe hose hung through a side window.

1940 CHRIS CRAFT ENCLOSED BRIDGE CRUISER – OLE CHRIS

Its name is OLE CHRIS and it is a 1940 Chris Craft EnclosedBridge Cruiser with a newly rebuilt straight six, Chris Craftgasoline engine. The interior is Philippine Mahogany, wornbut somehow holding out the prospect that it could be broughtback to a very attractive shine. The marina owner came overand told me it was a remarkably solid boat. They had calledthe owner about the problem, and he was on his way. I wastold that the owner had reached a point where he wasbringing the title over and that he had decided he wasfinished. If the boat was not sold, it was going to bedestroyed.

I continued to look and jumped on. I saw what looked likewindow crank handles. I cautiously cranked one, and downrolled one of the side windows. I saw three more crankhandles, two on each side. I peeked forward to see a galleyand an over/under set of bunks and a locker. I opened a doorto port and there was a head. The salon had an interior pilotstation but no flybridge. There was a newish, L-shaped sofathat supposedly converted into a double bed and providedstorage. I went back to climb out onto the deck. We quicklywent and looked at the other few boats, and I can’t even tellyou what they were. We ended up back at the Chris Craft.

I made the offer recommended by the salesperson, which wasway below asking price. The deal was struck with the supportmy wife provided by saying,… (Continued on Page 9.)

OLE CHRIS (continued from page 2.)

1940 CHRIS CRAFT ENCLOSED BRIDGE CRUISER – OLE CHRIS “How can you go wrong at that price?” OK, you live and youlearn. The bottom had to be refastened, recaulked andpainted – and the leak repaired – and while that was beingdone I had them sand and repaint the hull sides. Someonehad painted over just about all of the original brightwork andalthough the boat was hauled in September of 2006, it didn’tmake it back into the water until late April of 2007. Thenthere was the hassle of insuring an old wooden boat. I stillneed to scrape the paint and restore/preserve the brightwork. The result was that we took the boat out this summer after weobtained the insurance. It isn’t fast, about eight to ten knotstops. However, I filled both fuel tanks up to their sixty-fivegallon combined total, and after thirteen hours of operation Ihaven’t used ten to twelve gallons – no fuel gauge, just astick. I don’t want to say what I have put into this boat interms of money, but including the purchase price… It’s apaltry sum of money. I guess I could be in a sixteen totwenty-something footer, canvas-topped I/O somethingorotherdoing thirty knots, but it wouldn’t be anywhere near the same.I’m sending you some of my extra photographs. Take a look, and if anyone needs any extra incentive to grab up all of theseolder wooden boats, recite our story to them. Regards,

Richard B. Editor Note: I’d like to thank Richard for a wonderful letter. The bow shot of OLE CHRIS on page 2 says it all. Keep thoseinspirational letters and emails coming! www.BoneYardBoats.com

DINGHY NEWS FROM GINGER… By Ginger Martus

By the time you read this it will be well into the middle ofwinter -- or 'dullsville' in my case. But, we can always lookforward to spring and another busy boat season. Looks like Iwon't be as busy as I used to be; you see, I flunked my 'bonedensity' test, which tells me I shouldn't jump around the boatslike I used to. In fact, I should be thinking 'Geezerville,' but inthe meantime I still like to talk 'boat talk' and participate asmuch as I can.

Guess that's all my Dinghy news that's fit to print right now.Hope to have more stuff to tell you about in the next issue orwhen we see the first crocus. David is doing a great job withthe newsletter so when you see a boat in distress think ofDavid and let him know about it. Hope 2008 will be a good, fun and safe boating season for you all.

GINGER MARTUS BONE YARD BOATS FOUNDER

Newport, RI. This was before I knew of the merger with theInternational Yacht Restoration School. And so it came topass that AVOCETTE departed New Jersey on November 15,2007 at 7:30am and was trucked to Newport where she will bethe Flagship of both organizations. Briefly, what makes this boat so special is that she was ownedfor 52 years by one man, Fred Voges, who was Commodore ofthe Port Washington Yacht Club (1943-44) and kept her inpristine condition. Finally, at age 80 he had to let her go, andshe went from bad to worse from then on until the late BobTiedemann saved her and brought her to Newport where sheslept for several years until Bob heard that Jerry Bass (whitenight) was looking for his next restoration project. So, if you see a 48-foot all mahogany hull with gold on hertransom that says AVOCETTE and hopefully flying the PortWashington Yacht Club burgee at her bow, you'll know whereshe came from. In December, I drove to Cambridge, Maryland, to visit mygood friend Earl Brannock, and to see the 'work in progress' ofmoving his extensive nautical collection into the two-storybrick building, which is now known as the Brannock Educationand Research Center and is a part of the Richardson MaritimeMuseum. Yes, the two organizations merged in 2007. Aformal opening is planned for this April. If you're in the area, stop by and have a look. Located at Maryland Avenue,Cambridge, MD. You can't miss it! I have something that's too good to throw out, so it's up forgrabs. First call gets it, and I'll mail it too (609-859-2370). Itis a 6-page printout of 'WWII Construction Records' US CoastGuard Patrol Boats. Darned if I know how I got this. TheCoast Guard bought 230 new wood hull patrol boats, all thesame type and size -- 83 feet with 76 tons displacement. Allbuilt by Wheeler Shipbuilding of Brooklyn, NY. Includes thedisposition of the boats. Photo of one appeared in theJan./Feb. 2005 issue of Woodenboat magazine on page 136.

The big news is that I wasinstrumental in finding a new homefor AVOCETTE. This 1930, 48-foot Huckins was restored by the lateJerry Bass of New Jersey and wenton to win many awards at classicboat shows. When Jerry Basssuddenly died in July 2005, his wifeBette became the owner and notbeing a 'boat person' like you amdme, asked if I could find a new homefor AVOCETTE. I made a fewinquiries and later spoke with atrustee at the Museum of Yachting in

KNOW A BOAT THAT NEEDS SAVING?

1923 ELCO CRUISETTE 34'. (Continued from Page 1.) …heroriginal motor was removed (and lost for good) and replacedwith a 6cyl. From that point on she was launched with lessand less frequency, until at last she needed just enoughmaintenance to not be launched at all. At this point, she wassold to the well meaning, but unskilled previous owner whoproceeded to attempt to restore/repair her. Fortunately, verylittle was attempted. A few cedar planks removed, a couple ofribs sistered, and one plank replacement try.

“Unfortunately, the last action was to throw a tarp over herport amidships section and left that way for about ten years. What this resulted in was a very original Cruisette, rotten in anodd fashion. The bottom 2/3 of the hull/ribs/keel is verysound and true, with a clean bilge. But the top 3rd,particularly the port amidships where the tarp was, is rotten invarious stages. This boat does requires a completerestoration, but is such a prime candidate I purchased andtransported her in order to give her a little more time. Totallycomplete and original save for the engine, and there are manyextra parts from another Elco, including rudder, steering, andsome bronze & brass. Most if not all of the mahogany isabsolutely fine as is the interior. She was recently transportedwith no damage or movement as she is still structurally sound. As I have plans to move aboard another boat, a restoration issadly out of the question for me.”Asking $3,500. 1930 CUSTOM BRIDGEDECK CRUISER 30’

1930 CUSTOM BRIDGEDECK CRUISER 30’. We're completely open to any reasonableoffer/price is VERY negotiable!

“One of a kind classic. She was originally christened the‘TRIPLE R’ and built by a ship's carpenter named Bert Rominealong the Oakland/Alameda estuary in 1930/31. According tothe nephew, Bert Romine was a carpenter who built her for hisown use and probably to his own design. So now we finallyknow her provenance! In a covered slip since 1994. Bottomcompletely refastened in 2004. Basically unused in the lastfour years. Good engine, may need a little tinkering or a tune-up by now. Hull is Cedar on Oak. Decks are cedar on fir.Cabin is Teak and Mahogany. Graymarine 40hp. Newelectrical system with circuit breaker panel. Located Rio Vista,CA. Asking $12,500. Contact Sandra [email protected]

1958 DANISH KETCH 36’ (Continued from Page 1.) Ownersays, “I rescued this boat from the local marina, where theowner was going to have it cut up because he was losing hisslip. I moved it to a local shed to do some repairs, as it haddeck leaks and rot down low. I have removed several planksabove the keel and the lower ends of the frames are mostlyrotted, as well as many of the floors. The frames are notbroken however, so the lower 12" to 24" could be cut off andnew wood laminated, new floor beams installed, etc.Alternatively, new bent frames could be installed but would be more destructive. She also needs replacement of a rottedforekeel, a rudder repair, and replanking below waterlines. Then there is waterproofing of the deck so this doesn't happenagain. This is a beautiful boat and should be good for another50 years - its just too much work for me to accomplish quicklyand the boat draws too much for the skinny waters of Florida'swest coast. It really needs to move to cooler and deeperwaters. The boat is free to a good home. I have purchasedoak, purpleheart and bronze bolts for repairs, which I'd like tosell for my cost.” FREE! 1947 WINSLOW KETCH 32’. (Continued from Page 1.) “Thedeck is Southern yellow pine and was 80% traditionally re-caulked a few years ago. The Bronze fasteners keep findinggood wood when I put them into the major parts of the hull. There is an 8 year old Lead overlay covering the lower stembutt joint. There is another copper piece along the portGarboard, JIC. I have replaced the entire rudder, Bronze hullfasteners, Icebox companionway beam, Bow sprit, housecovering trim, hatches, keel bolts that did not need replacing, main panel wiring, engine stuff, etc. Starboard Aft Bulwarksare badly checked and wrinkle the paint whenever is it iscoated. She has been showing her age, but her sturdytraditional lines are priceless. Her complete line drawings areat Mystic with designer Ralph Winslow’s collection. I believethere are only a few of these built under the Tusitala designname. A Solar panel on the Aft deck keeps the tired pair ofbatteries up. Extra set of old sails. She is in Bristol ME. Thehydraulic trailer guys hold her securely; she travels over theroad nicely. She sets well on her full iron keel + jack stands. She draws about 5’6”.” Asking $11,000 OBO/trades. 1956 THOMPSON SEA SKIFF 15’

1956 THOMPSON SEA SKIFF 15’. Owner says, “This boatwas fully restored 4 years ago, but she could use a fresh coatof varnish and hull paint. She comes with a vintage 1958Evinrude Lark 30 HP with electric start. She rides on a vintageTee Nee trailer that needs a coat of paint. The boat takes 2-3days to swell up and after that she's as tight as a drum. Freshwater use only. This is a great boat at a great price. At 15feet she handles big water very comfortably and turns headswherever you go. Hate to let her go but I already have a 22foot 1949 Chris Craft to keep me busy, and the wife wants thegarage back!” Asking $4,500. Call Alan at 603-380-6000 [email protected] (NH)
