Each, plug and receptacle insulator, have cavities.Picture 1

Marked by letters from A to M.

The keys attached to the strip fit into these cavities.Picture 2

They are marked by figures from 1 to 12.

The keys 1, 2, 3, ...., 12 are inserted into the cavities A, B, C,...., M.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR KEYING

1. Keying of the fixed connector(receptacle for standard system, plug for inverted system)

Choose six cavities into which the keys shall be inserted. Break therelated keys individually off the strip and insert them into the chosen cavities.

2. Keying of the free connector(plug for standard system, receptacle for inverted system)

Insert the balance of the keys remaining attached to the strip into thebelonging cavities and break off the strip.

We recommend 6 keys in each side of a pair of connectors. Including theexample shown above, 924 different keying possibilities are available.

Design Aids

KEYINGThis keying system has been developed in order to avoid the insertion of daughter boards into the wrong slot of a card cage.Apart from the fact that the Elco-keying system is easy to handle it provides a very cost efficient solution and has the followingadvantages: No breaking-off plastic parts for keying purposes in plug or

receptacle insulators. No tools required. Keying can be changed, keying mistakes can easily be corrected. Keys are supplied as handy strips carrying 12 keys. The needed

number of keys is broken off the strip and put into the corre-sponding cavities of the male insulator. The balance of the keys(still on the strip) is inserted into the cavities of the keying systemof the female insulator. The strip is then broken off. The Elco-version with keys on a strip is a considerable advantage againstcompetitors' solutions using loose coding keys.

Keying versatility (924 different positions). Compatible with leading manufacturers' products. Keys are available in white or red color. Styles B, C, D*, E, Q, R and 1/2C are available.

BOARD RETENTION CLIPSAvailable on Elco DIN (right angle & straight, headers & receptacles)...Clips are installed at the factory. Board retention clips eliminate the need for mounting hardware. They are designed to hold the connector in place during soldering.

THE NEW VARIPINTM

VaripinTM the flexible press-fit contact used byElco since the mid 1970's has after intensiveresearch been heavily modified in recent years.This research concentrated upon the contactzone and in particular the mechanical aspectsthat guarantee an equal force on the completecontact length and to prevent 'eye of the needle'cracking, or the contact itself damaging the PCB.The new configuration was determined by a numeric solution algorithm for elastic- andelastoplastic problems within structural mecha-nisms.The objective was the numerical simulation ofthe press-in process of the VARIPIN with theaim of optimizing its form and appearance.

INSERTION FORCESDuring the optimization of the press-in area aspecial core was created for compliance withthe maximum press-in (250N) and minimumpush-out (30N) forces specified in DIN 41611.In the diagram to the right the behavior of thepress-in- and push-out forces in relation to thediameter of the hole as well as the diagonal ofthe press-in pin (1.24 mm) are shown.

Press-Fit Technology

INSERTION FORCE AFTER THE THIRDEXCHANGE OF A CONTACT

Due to the very low strain on the PCB hole anexchange of pins in one hole is possible up to3 times without a significant loss of retainingforce. Using the Elco repair set contacts can beexchanged at any position within a press-inconnection. This repair can be done within avery short time (eg. 5 min.) even in the ''field''.Special repair insertions are available that allowexchanges to be made by hand.

DIMENSIONS Elco's 3-row, 96 contact position receptacleconnector with crimp contacts follows the pat-tern of the DIN 41612 standard. The innovativecontact principle assures reliable electricalconnection even under extreme conditions.The crimps are individually terminated andinserted into the housing. With the use of anextraction tool, the contact can be removedfrom the housing for inspection or repair.Main applications are as an input/output con-nector on backpanels or rack frontside.A complete tool program is available, fromhand crimp to automatic crimping machines.

Cable Cover For Style C/R/MSeries 8404

The 8404 series cable cover is an accessory extension toElco’s already large DIN 41612 connector range.The cover is suitable for use with any standard 96 positionshell size DIN connector, styles C, R and M. The design ofthe cover enables the completed assembly to be fittedtogether without the use of specialized tools. Field service

repairs are possible. The cover is assembled by fitting thejackscrew, which locks the two cover halves together, andalso locates and positions the connector.The cover is capable of housing crimp or IDC connectors. It is available with an RFI/EMI shield on the inner faces of the cover.
