The process was instituted many years ago when the ‘cash world’ ruled, and parents often found it difficult to find the correct money to send along to school to pay for excursions etc, especially when more than one child was involved in an activity such as swimming or Edu Dance. What parents are probably not aware of however, is the amount of administration involving office staff and teachers that is necessary to make the up-front system work. With the introduction of Qkr, (pronounced ‘quicker’) which is now used by the vast majority of our parents/caregivers, pay- ment is a whole lot more efficient. If you haven’t already downloaded the App, here’s how it’s done: Qkr can be downloaded for free from Apple’s app store for iPhones (for iPads download the iPhone app) or from Google Play for Android phones and tablets. After downloading the app and registering, simply select Booragoon Primary School from ‘Nearby Locations’ on Qkr or type Booragoon after tapping the magnifying glass in the top right of the home screen on Qkr. School Review Our tri-annual school review took place this week, and the feedback received from the Director of Public School Account- ability, Mr Rod Lowther, and the Principal of Wembley Primary School, Ms Donna Snow was overwhelmingly complimentary and positive. I cannot speak too highly of our teachers, who presented their work to the reviewers throughout the course of the day. They are highly skilled practitioners, who provide our students with an outstand- ing education, in a nurturing, caring environment. Mr Lowther commented in particular on the inclusive nature of the school, and the fact that ‘We’re a happy school’ came more than throughout the meetings. We have a lot to be proud of at Booragoon PS. (This photo is testament to that!) Principal’s News Term 3 Week 6 Canning Banksia Swan

For your information, please be advised Booragoon Primary School now has a new

telephone number 6274 1800.

We are advising you this so that if the new number appears on your mobile phones you will know it is the school calling. If you are making calls to the school, the old number (9317 2133) will be diverted to the new number for the next twelve months.

Please be advised that the boys cargo shorts and girls skorts have been discontinued from our uniform suppliers due to the fact that there has not been any demand for them for quite some time. The price of the polo shirts, which has not been reviewed for several years, will rise from $24 to $26 from 1st November.

B ook Week 2019

The theme for this year’s Book Week was Reading is my Secret Power, and reading certainly does give us many powers. Numerous studies have shown that children who regularly read for pleasure outperform their non-reading peers academically; not only in literacy, but in mathe-matics as well. A recent UK study found that reading for pleasure not only boosts educational

outcomes for children, but also increases empathy, enriches social relationships, improves self-esteem, re-duces symptoms of depression and develops an overall sense of wellbeing. Reading is a very powerful thing indeed, and instilling children with a love of reading should be high on our list of priorities as both parents and educators.

Author & Illustrator Sessions Students in Rooms 1-4, 7 & 10 were lucky enough to meet Wendy Binks as part of their Book Week celebrations. Wendy is the author and illustrator of picture books including Where’s Stripey and Invisible Me, however some of you may know her better as the ‘Emu Lady’ from the Fremantle Markets. We heard all about her journey to self-publish her own books, as well as some interesting facts about emus and other Australian animals. The students (and adults!) then learnt some valuable skills that proved if you start with simple shapes, anyone can draw a great picture. Students in Rooms 8, 9, & 11-14 will be attending a presentation from author/illustrator James Foley next Thursday. He is a dynamic presenter and the students are looking forward to meeting him.

Junior Judges Due to the overwhelming number of entries, this year a third category was added to the Junior Judges program. Along with the Picture Book of the Year and the Younger Readers Book of the Year, students could also elect to judge the Eve Pownall Information Book of the Year. The Junior Judges were required to read and evaluate the six shortlisted books in their chosen category to determine which they thought should be the winner of the prestigious Book of the Year award. Once again the students did an amazing job and produced some very insightful evaluations. Congratulations and a big thank you to Clare P. from Room 8; Ava T. and Sandy G. from Room 9; Sophie C. from Room 13; Alex M., Leo W. and Olivia Y. from Room 14; and Millie G., Oliver B., Michael P., and Alex V. from Room 12. To view all the shortlisted books, or to find out more about the awards, visit https://cbca.org.au

Dress-up Day Our annual dress-up day parade is the most highly anticipated event of Book Week, and this year was no exception! Students and staff looked fantastic dressed up as book characters from all types of stories, and it was a delight to see some new characters mixed in with many old favourites. Thank you to all the parents who put in the effort to turn their child’s dreams into reality – I am always overwhelmed at the variety, originality and creativity of the costumes. An extra special thank you goes to those parents who encouraged their children to read the book from which their character was derived, and to those parents who make every week Book Week by putting in the time and effort to ensure their children experience the power of reading.

Book Week 2019 continued...

A big thank you goes to Mrs Casas for taking on the role of ‘Official Book Week Photographer’ and for assisting with the running of the parade. Thank you also to Mr Godwin and Max C. for coordinating the audio-visuals. A great time was had by all!

Competitions Kindy & PP Colouring Competition: Congratulations to the winners of the Book Week colouring competition: Rosamund, Emerson and Evelyn (from PPB); Rafaela from Kindy Gold; and Amelia and Jye from Kindy Blue.

Stripey Competition: In honour of Wendy Binks’ visit to BPS, students were invited to design a background for Stripey the emu (one of the characters from Wendy’s books). Wendy kindly judged the entries, and was amazed at the students’ creativity. Congratulations to the winners and runners up who received a Wendy Binks prize pack: Lilly K. & Kenzie L. (Room 7); Laura M. & Noah T. (Room 3); Chloe G. & Adam P. (Room 4).

Class vs Class Competition: This competition, open to students in Years 1-6, has been running since Week 3 and ends in Week 8. It has been great to see the high number of participants who are challenging themselves to extend their reading and earn points for their class. The winning class will be announced in Week 9, so stay tuned!

Drama Performances This year Ms Hamill coordinated performances based on the ‘Reading is my Secret Power’ theme during Drama classes. Five groups of students performed their imaginative skits during lunchtime on Tuesday, much to the delight of the captive audience. The skill with which the performers delivered their lines and acted out their scenes was very impressive!

Classroom Activities Teachers thought of some great book-themed activities for their students to complete this year, and I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing them on display in classrooms and around the school.

As always, a big thank you must go to all parents and staff for your support of this event, once again it was a highly enjoyable and successful week celebrating children’s literature.

More photos will be uploaded to the Booragoon Primary School website soon.
