A publication of the Lennox Leadership
Development Organization
As I am sitting here, trying to think of what my first message to
LLDO should be, I received an email from David Heddens. The
email was about the upcoming Cowlympics at the Central Iowa
Fair grounds on July 11th. While looking at the flyer, I tried to
picture myself as one of the participants and having a team repre-
sent LLDO entering the event. This looked like it would be
FUN!!!!! Most of my co-workers probably know by now that I am an introvert,
so after a while this picture in my mind became less and less appealing. I can al-
most talk myself out of anything. John Maxwell said, “If we’re growing, we’re
always going to be out of our comfort zone.”
Last year LLDO had an outstanding year in all areas. As president I wanted my
theme to grow your confidence by “Meeting the Challenge” head on this year.
We all have challenges in our lives and we can make them positive ones.
On this note, if anyone wants to do the Cowlympics on July 11th please sign up.
You may see my name on it.
Committees are coming together and action has started with the planning of pro-
grams and Community service activities. If you are interested in a committee, and
time is the problem all you need to do is call one of the committee chairs and ask
how you can be of help. This is your club and with that WE NEED ALL OF
YOU TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. “The only limitations that we have are the
ones that we place on our own mind.” -- Author Tammy L. Turner
As president, I am looking forward to a great year and I know that I cannot do it
by myself. So with the help of the committees and membership let’s meet the
challenges and have a very rewarding year.

In Case You Missed It By April Blais
It was Tuesday, June 11th, late afternoon when the 2013 LLDO Top Management event took place at Elmwood
Country Club in Marshalltown. It was a very hot, beautiful day, and it was nice to be in the cool air conditioning
of the Great Hall looking out over the green golf course. Dave Lennox was there in his bib overalls and page-boy
hat. For the last 28 years Dave Lennox has been played by Bob Tibbetts. I was a little nervous to say “Hi” to him
at first, but saw he was a very nice man and was excited to talk to him over dinner. I appreciated how Bob kept
his cell phone in the chest pocket of his overalls, a modern twist on a classic outfit, and very convenient.
Many Lennox LDO members came with family, significant others, or friends. Katy Rhinehart and Tyler Gerdes
greeted guests with door prize tickets and name tags, and Chris Olivier took pictures throughout the night.
Soon the buffet line started. There were delicious salads, dinner rolls, pork tenderloin, beef, and brownies and
cookies for dessert.
Over dinner I talked to Bob Tibbetts about his life and how he
became the face of Lennox. He was born in Illinois but only lived
there a short time. He lived in St. Louis for a long time; in fact
that’s where he heard about an opening for becoming Dave Len-
nox. He’d been working in freelance marketing for a radio station
in St. Louis, and at that time Lennox’s marketing headquarters
was in St. Louis. Friends told him the first Dave Lennox actor was
retiring, so he auditioned and got the part! He told his wife if he
could have that job for at least five years, it would be great.
Now, 28 years later, Bob has become so accustomed to his page-
boy cap and mustache, he said he will wear his hat regularly in
retirement, and never get rid of his mustache. He said he has only
one main pair of bib overalls and one back-up pair. He also only wears one hat at a time until it wears out, but
he’s had eight different hats. When I asked Bob what he liked to do for fun, he said he loves boating and has a
40’ boat that he, his wife, two grown daughters and their families all like to use together.
After dinner, Linda Andrews opened the LLDO business meeting and introduced two new interns, Clay Hawken
and Joe Carnaroli, and new hire Kelly Graham. The New Member of the Year Award went to Nathan Mielke, and
the two recipients of Member of the Year Awards were Teri Wilson
and Dave Heddens. David Hanson installed the 2013-2014 officers Linda
Andrews, Dave Heddens, Steve Bolar, and Alejandra Martinez. Tom
Taylor then introduced speakers Lee-Eft and Gary Pennington. Lee is
the Lennox Des Moines District Sales Manager, and Gary is with Lozier
Plumbing & Heating in Des Moines, a five time Dave Lennox Award
winning Premier Dealer. They held an informative question and an-
swer session to explain a day in the life of a Lennox dealer. The talk
demonstrated how the hard work put in at the Marshalltown plant is
respected and appreciated in Iowa and across the world.

Did You Know? By Logan Boehm
July 4th is the National Day of the United States. This is the day that represents the country’s independence giving it the com-monly known name Independence Day. In the year of 1776, the original Thirteen Colonies separated from Great Britain. In June of 1776, Richard Henry Lee from Virginia proposed a reso-lution of independence which was approved by the Second Continental Congress soon after on July 2, 1776. After the vote for independence was passed, Congress turned its focus to the Declaration of Independence.
The declaration was written by a committee of five consisting of John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Robert Livingston of New York, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia. Thomas Jefferson was the principal author and wrote the first draft. Congress then de-bated and came up with several revisions on this declaration before finally ap-proving it and signing it on July 4th, 1776.
Many historians believe that the Declaration of Independence was actually signed on Au-gust 2nd, 1776, although John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson all referred to have signed it on July 4th in some of their later writings. Today, July 4th is a major holiday across the country. It is commonly celebrated with electrifying firework shows all over the nation. Everyone celebrates in their own way,
but all Americans know this to be a day where we celebrate our freedom and independence as a county.

On June 6th, the LLDO Board meeting was held in the small auditorium. In at-
tendance were the 2012-2013 outgoing board and the 2013-2014 incoming
board. By inviting the new board, it familiarizes them with how board meetings
are conducted and what to expect. After the meeting, lunch was provided and
the outgoing officers and chairs reviewed their standard work with incoming of-
ficers & chairs. Any new board member can rest assured they won’t be alone in
the job; help from former officers/chairs is always available. We want LLDO to
grow and prosper so we’ll do all we can to insure we have good leaders in the
organization.
Here is your 2013-2014 LLDO board:
If you are interested in helping on any of the committees, don’t hesitate to call the chairperson - it’s your
opportunity to make a difference, lead, and learn along the way.

National Management Week Recap By Vicki Miller
During Management Week in America, the Membership & Community Services committees held the annual celebration, but did so with a twist. Instead of serving breakfast as we have in the past we wanted to appeal to your sweet tooth with an ice cream sundae bar. This year we thought we would try something new while hosting the membership drive by promoting joining a committee.
Two drawings were held for a $20 lunch ticket each. One drawing was for potential members who joined LLDO. We would like to WELCOME Kelly Graham & Mike Gleason as our newest members with Kelly winning the drawing. The second drawing was to entice members to join committees. Mike Gleason, the winner of the second drawing jumped in with both feet and joined two committees. Congratulations Mike & Kelly!!
THANK YOU to all the members who not only stepped up to the challenge to join a committee but for also
choosing to get involved!!
1. Mike Gleason – Professional Development & Member Relations
2. Rick Elsberry – Professional Development
3. Teri Wilson – Member Relations
4. Joyce Wilson – Member Relations
5. Kelly Graham – Programs
6. Janet Borcherding – Public Relations
7. Glenn Harmelink – Member Relations
LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN… and WOMEN: The Member Relations Committee is still looking for more members to join the team. The total time commit-ment for the upcoming year is 30 – 45 min. Can you spare the time to take attendance or sell lotto tickets at one monthly meeting? Yes, I said ONE monthly meeting. If you can spare 45 minutes and willing to get in-volved, please contact Vicki Miller, membership chair at [email protected] or 754-4216.

NMA East Leadership Development Conference Trip
By Linda Andrews
My trip to Florida started with a good flight, and the drive to the hotel was uneventful; I liked that. From the hotel
room you could hear the palm trees whispering in the summer breeze of 80 degrees, and the bay from the hotel room
was beautiful to look at only 50 feet away. This may sound wonderful but there was one drawback, it wasn’t a vaca-
tion. On May 17th -18th, I again had the privilege to represent LLDO. This time it was at the 2013 NMA East Leadership
Development Conference in Panama City Beach, Florida.
In the two days that the conference was held, we had eight workshops, the
speech contest and a banquet following. Winners of the speech contest were
announced at the banquet. There were eight very talented contestants. This is
always the highlight of the conference; when you hear these young adults give
their speeches it just makes you proud of them all. Our contestant, Daniel Blom,
was the first one up to speak and gave a flawless presentation, but as I said there
were eight great speakers that night. Daniel did us proud, but not all can win, and it was not his night.
The workshop that I found to be the most challenging turned out to be the most fun. It was the Survival Workshop
held on Alligator Island. Although I did not see any alligators, I did see a Hermit crab. Alligator Island is a small beach
area that you can take a lunch out to or start a fire on, and that is what we did, or should I say we tried. We were giv-
en a kit which included a tarp with string, steel wool, a C-battery, and a wood rod. Our mission was to pitch a tent
and start a fire. Hint: the steel wool and battery were for the fire. This workshop was conducted by Ken Burton, Pres-
ident of S.T.A.R.K. Survival Company, Inc.
As always with this type of a trip, time does go fast. You try to take in as much knowledge as possible and reap the
benefits. I was honored to be able to have this opportunity to represent LLDO. Thank you.
I think people make their own faces, as they grow.

Last month a picture was featured of Governor Terry Branstad signing a proclamation declaring
Management Week in America as June 2-8 with Alan Anselman, Sandra Holubar, and David
Heddens. A similar photo was dug up recently from 1984, once again with Terry Branstad.
Which of the four men shown with the Governor in the picture below is an active
Lennox Marshalltown employee and who is it?
Please send guesses to Justin Huntington by July 22. A drawing will be held for all correct answers and
the winner will receive a drink of his/her choice from the cafeteria.

UPCOMING PROGRAM MEETING—
MOTIVATE, INSPIRE AND PRODUCE RESULTS
David “The Shef” Sheffield will be keynoting the September 19, 2013
meeting of the LLDO. “The Shef” became an entrepreneur at the ripe old
age of 19, going on to discover how to be a direct sales success. The sys-
tems he implemented helped build successful teams of 300-350 salespeople.
Neighboring businesses would then and still send their employees for a dose
of Motivation and positive attitude.
Shef has written 5 books over the last 10 years, Unleashing the Leader With-
in You, Unleashing the Vision Within You, Massive Dose of Motivation, One
Step From Striking Gold, and When Would NOW be a Good Time?.
I hereby issue you a challenge: Take Shef’s 10 day Challenge. See if it does in fact make a difference in your
life:
1- No News-Turn off media “autopilot. When was the last time you saw something positive on the news?
Eliminate non-work related news for 10 days and replace it with positive audios, books and videos.
2-Celebrate the Morning-Journal, read and create your “Gratitude List.” What you think and thank about,
you’ll bring about. Follow that with physical exercise if you can. DO NOT CHECK YOUR E-MAIL! Do that lat-
er. Answering e-mail puts you in a reactionary state. Set the foundation for success by starting the day
right.
3- Choose the words you live with-Eliminate words that don’t move you in a positive direction. You can’t
try something. Either you do it or you don’t. Being positive is often not easy, but it does help create great
results when you combine it with a great attitude and action.
4-Write your top 3 goals every day. They must be 50% believable. Keep them in front of you. You must
write them NOT type them. There are specific neurological reasons why writing anchors in your brain.
5-Drink 8 glasses of water each day. Dehydration does nasty things to our bodies and minds. Stay hydrated.
ALSO, FIND A WAY TO SWEAT AT LEAST 20 MINUTES, 3 TIMES A WEEK. Use it or lose it.
6- Removal of negative people. Clean out your “people Closet.” Negative people bring you down. Surround
yourself with people who inspire, push, and encourage you. If you can’t fully remove someone from your
life, love them from a distance. Life is too short to let other people drag you down.
Join us for an interesting, enjoyable and motivating time September 19, 2013 to meet David Sheffield. He
will have his books for sale at the close of the meeting and will be happy to autograph them for you.
