It is amazing how quickly time flies when were doing the work that we love. The Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center has been busy refining our programs and services and making plans for the future with our next strategic plan. We are also busy planning celebratory activities to commemorate our 40th anniversary as a nonprofit serving the greater Boston Asian American community!
As the global financial crisis deepens, BCNC is engaging in some very serious conversations and making decisions that will help ensure our vitality and sustainability for the next 40 years. Our focus is on maximizing our
resources by streamlining the organization, and keeping our impact high for children, youth, adults and families.
Our commitment to our community remains the primary focus, and in this spirit, theres an exciting new initiative that Id like to share. As you may have read through our eNews, BCNC has been fortunate to receive a Congressional Earmark grant in 2008 through the support
of Congressman Michael Capuano (Thank you, Congressman!). This project between our Adult Education program and our Childcare Department will focus on providing not only English in the context of childrens development, but also provide our staff with training in core 21st Century skills including the use of technology and databases, and the development of critical thinking through use of evaluation tools and metrics.
Higher childcare accreditation and licensing standards will require teachers have received or be working toward a college degree in order to meet minimum state and national standards in a couple of years, and its our hope that we can use our curriculum to support non-native English speaking childcare staff in other organizations to be successful and have a career ladder as early educators.
Earlier, I mentioned increasing BCNCs impact and maximizing our resources. Projects which provide opportunities to increase peoples skills provide a clear community benefit with impact far beyond the funding. Its programs and services like these which create opportunities and support for our families, and I hope that you enjoy reading about BCNCs impact in the newsletter.
But our resources will be quickly depleted without continued help and support from our family of supporters and donors. For this support, we are extremely appreciative and cannot extend our gratitude enough as we are more than aware of how these tough economic times impact us all. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be one of the premier Asian American nonprofits in the country!

Red Envelope Giving Circle
In the Chinese culture, hong bao (a red envelope with money inside) is given away for special celebrations such as the New Year, birthdays, and weddings. It symbolizes good fortune, prosperity, love, and appreciation.
The Red Envelope Giving Circle represents a group of leadership donors who, through their support of the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, show their commitment to children, youth, strengthening families, and building a stronger community. We deeply appreciate the donors listed here for their generosity towards the annual fund during fiscal year 2008.

Family Child Care
O ver the years, BCNC has developed an innovative approach to programming that emphasizes whole families, an approach that allows residents of all ages to engage in a network of services that supports their learning, growth and success. Today, that family-centered approach underlies all our work, and encompasses eight programs that serve
infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; school-aged children and youth; parents and grandparents;
new immigrants; and those who are born here.
Acorn Center for Early Education and Care Acorn received national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children in 2000, and was reaccredited in 2006. This process is very rigorous as only 8% of centers nationwide are accredited. During FY2008, Acorn enhanced its child
assessment system utilizing an online Creative Curriculum Assessment Tool. We maintained and improved our nutrition program and enhanced our parent services with a grant from the Massachusetts Children's Trust Fund.

Adult Education education. Eight graduating students became tutors in our program. Among all students in our ESOL program, 20 became citizens, 16 went on to higher education, 4 entered job training programs, and 18 found jobs or secured better jobs.
In FY2008, the program achieved advanced status in the performance standards categories of attendance,
average attended hours, pre and post [testing] percentage, and goal attainment. Although there are many factors that contributed to this high level of achievement, none stands out more than the dedication and determination of the entire staff. -- From the state monitoring report of BCNCs Adult Education program, April, 2008
