-50-PREFACE TO HISTORICAL NOTES *
These charts cover 1200 years of human history. Some races, such as the Chinese and the Hebrews have kept genealogical recordsas a matter of course, but it has been a matter of practiceamong Anglo-Saxon to do it only for important people. This doesnot give any of us the right to be unduly proud, however. Letus look at the facts: Everyone has two parents, 4 grand-parents,8 greats, and so on. By the end of 20 generations this beeranmes
a good sized city— each one of us has 1,048,576 ancestors* As a
generation is counted as about 55 years, this great number' is
achieved in 600 years. Another 600 years, to cover this chart,
would show an astounding figure, probably larger than the entire
population of Western Europe and Britain at that time* The
answer is, of course, that with intermarriages and many children,
we are all descended from the same people—a different mixture,of course} but, good, bad, or indifferent, we are all from the
same stock.
Times were savage in the early days, so many men who,tho wiseand capable, were at the same time crsfty and cruel. Charlemagnehimself, though the greatest ruler of e'arly Europe, did not hesi-tate to behead those who refused to be baptized.
In 1075? 3- revolt of Norman knights broke out, and Waltheof, one of the few surviving Saxon knights, joined them. WilliamThe Conqueror hurried back from Normandy and put down the in-surrection, but he let the Norman knights go, and beheadedWaltheof (who was one of our early ancestors-) See I. lb.
Even in the days of the Pilgrim Fathers, persecution had madethe leaders, stern and unbending. John Oldham was the leader ofa group of ten adventurers who arrived on the ANNE, and immediate-ly started trouble • The old chronicle states that John wasforced to run the gauntlet between a line of soldiers to a wait-ing boat on the shore and each of them gave him " a bob upon thebumme" and a "thump on ye brich", and bade him "go & mende hismanners." He came back several times, but finally went to BlockIsland where an Indian killed him, and thus was brought on thePequot War. (He was also our ancestor, since his daughter mar-ried Jonathan Brewster, son of Elder Brewster i ' (I. 5a )
IAGNA CHARTA ^i„
As most of you know, the harsh rule of King John, and his •
heavy demands upon the barons finally forced them to band to-gether to find ajway toward a more democratic government. Atthe high altar of the Norman Abbey of Bury, Stephen Langton,Archbishop of Canterbury gathered the barons and swore toforce the King to sign the Magna Charta. This he did, thoughJohn could not write his name, so had to make his mark. Later,Bishop Langton refused to obey the Pope's command to excommunicatethe barons who signed the charter.
Magna Charta Barons who are ancestors of most of the peoplenamed on these charts (except husbands and wives, Unless theyhave come down on other lines.) All of these on Chart I.

* The lapse of time being so great, it is not surprising thatthere are differences of opinion regarding certain lines o'
1
descent. This is so regarding William Marshall. Some au-
thorities claim that Maud, his daughter, (Chart I. kg) hadno children at all by her husband, Hugh Bigot (Adams & Weis).
Browning says she had 5 sons and 5 daughters; but the sons had
no children. Wurts says she had children. Wm. Chauncy Fowler
in his Chauncy Memorials has her name in the line of descent.Sir. Winston Churchill, in The Eirth of Britain speaks ofa son of John Marshall.
I have accepted the records of those who believed she had
children, chiefly because her children are credited with in-
heriting offices, which, as I understand the old English law,
could be inherited only through her; e.g. Marshall of England,
which went to her son Roger, and was returned to the Crown
by the 5th Earl of Norfolk, her grandson.

Chauncy Memorials). Because he was a man of greet piety —and greaterdetermination, he was always in trouble. He was persecuted for op-posing a "Book of Sports" which permitted Sund^t games after church, and "was cast into prison in England for opposing changes in the Com-munion.
In New England, in his first pastorate, he raised a contro-versy by insisting that children must be baptized by complete im-mersion, not by sprinkling; and that it should be done at night. He took another charge with the same result. He finally decidedto return to England where his university would employ him.
Eut Dr. Dunster, first President of Harvard had died, and thetrustees, knowing of Dr. Chauncy's scholarship, decided that thequestion of infant baptism would not arise in a college, so theyoffered him the position of President of Harvard, l6^h, at 100pounds a year, on condition that he no longer published his tenetsregarding infant baptism.
Of him and Dr. Dunster was said that both were able, faithfuland earnest; both learned beyond the measure of their contempo-raries, end probably in this resnect never surpassed in that office.
Dr« Chauncy's chief difficulty was financial. He had ten child-ren and could not have managed without his small income from anestate in England. There are letters extant to the Fathers of theMassachusetts Commonwealth. One complained: "The allotment of Indiancorn was uasd to pay debts, as well as 100 pounds of your petition-ers own estate* There is no ground belonging to the President tokeep cattle upon, so that neither milk, butter, or cheese can behad but by the penny. These details were revealed by a succeeding President,Dr. Quincy, who said:" Dr. Dunster and Dr. Chauncy exceeded every oneof their successors in suffering, sacrifice and privations, yet theywere^the fain support of Harvard for pO years when its friends were

~3 MEAD (continued)The Mead homestead on upper Lake Avenue in Greenwich, Connecticut^
has been standing since pre—Revolutionary times. During the RevoluAtion a number of British soldiers came to the door and demanded food.
Grandmfcher Mead (ifcufh Ly&.Tisi) was alone in the house with theyounger children, tut she picked up her broom and barred their way,
announcing that they had done too much damage to her family alreadyand would get no food in her house. They threatened her with theirbayonets, but evidently respected her bravery, for they thrust theirbayonets into the wall of the room, and when she did not yield, theypulled them out and went away. Those bayonet holes were still therewhen, as a child of seven, I was taken to the house, and they im; «*
pressed me mightily. Unfortunately a will was circumvented and theperson who acquired the property sold it immediately. It is stillstanding, and has become a beautiful estate.
WARNER
Lucien Birdseye Warner, who married Helen Mead, was of Englishbirth and parentage. His father, on the death of the child T
s moth-er, took him to Brooklyn, N. Y, where he put hin in charge of twoaunts. He then returned to England. The boy's name at that timeWas Martin Van Buren Warner. The aunts evidently did not like thePresident of that name, so they re-named him after a Brooklyn Judge,Lucien Birdseye. Years passed. The boy grew up, married and wasnear retirement. One day his wife saw an advertisement in theBrooklyn paper asking for the whereabouts of Martin van Buren Warner.Mystified, th^ry answered the ad. They discovered that all the rel -
atives in England had died, and there was a legacy. But they werenot interested in Lucien Warner. All witnesses were dead; what to do J
Suddenly the wife remembered a small book that Martin had earned formemory work in Sunday School more than ^>0 years before. Theyfinally found it, inscribed to Martin Van Eur en Warner, and a gener-ous legacy was turned over to them.
The Warner family is now widely scattered, fflogt §f them inCalifornia. See Chart VII.
THE LIVINGSTONS -?7~The Livingstons, Jays, and Schuylers were all related by des-cent from the Earls of Livingston and Callender. There is a rhymethat puts a Livingston among the Maids of Honor of Mary, Queenof Scots
—""Mary Seaton, Mary Beaton, Mery Livingston, and me."
The Livingstons came to America in 1674 with a grant from KingGeorge I. for extensive estates on the Hudson River, and soon be-acame wealthy and powerful Barons. Their attempts to enlargetheir holdings from the State of Vermont is related by DorothyCanfield Fisher, in " The Vermont Tradition". Sarah Livingstonmarried John Jay, Chief Justice. The oath of office was adminis-tered to George Washington by Chancellor Robert Livingston ( a
cousin, not in direct line.')
The Van Voorhies family, one of whom marided a Livingston,(Chart IV. ), were among the errly settlers of New York City,
(then New Amsterdam). They also have a long distinguished hist*-',
ory. References: Cyclopedia of Biography, Hawkes; Biographyof Signers of Declaration of Independence, Dwight; AmericanBiographical and Historical Dictionary, W9 Allen, D.D.Heilmsn's , History of the Revolution; Historical register.
THE VICKERSThe name Vickers is frequently found in the annals of ancient
Sheffield, England. The name is associated with the colonial daysof the Province of Maryland and has been identified with theEastern Shore since 1750* Several generations of Vickers livedin Massachusetts before the settlement of Maryland. JamesSavage in his Genealogical Dictionary of the first settlers of
New England, tracing 5 generations who arrived before 1692,
and one Vickers who was in New Haven in I67O; died, 1684.

Gen. George Vickers was admitted to the bar of Kent in 1Q^>P 9 and
in I856 was one of 21 Whig members of the Senatorial College.
THE GOODRICH FAMILY
The Goodrich family is noted for the long lane of Christianministers which it produced, many of them professors in Yale,
and two who nearly became President of Yale. One was electedand declined; another tied with Dr. Styles and withdrew in
his favor. During the Revolution some of these professors
-58-were cited for their assistance in recruiting.
The femily is very old. According to the Domesday Book, compiledin Saxon England about 991 A.D., Godric was a landed proprietor. In
the reign of King Stephen, 1155-1154? William, and William Fitz-William Godric lived in Yorkshire. Those in America were noted for
literary ability and poetry, as well as their high-/, personal stan-dards.
Browning, Strothers, ANDERSON Dabney, DulaneyThrough the above lines, Woodford Dulaney Anderson 's ancestry
has been traced through Norman and Saxon lines to William the Con-queror and to the Saxon kings, through Edward I. His sister, JennieAnderson Brown spent a lifetime in tracing many branches of thefamily. The records are voluminous. The present writer hopes to beable to organize them for publication. Revolutionary ancestry ofWoodford D. Anderson and his descendants: Captain John DabneyStrothers, b. 1721; d. April, 1795; m. Mary Willis Wade.Captain John Browning, b. April 16, 17^9; d. The father of W. D. Anderson is reputed to have been des-cended from Chief Justice of the U. S., John Marshall. His namewas William Samuel Marshall Anderson, of Snow Hill, Md*
There is a story told of the name Dulaney , for which I do
not vouch. It is said that an early king of France had a
hostler, who in a crisis, saved his life. The hostler was there-opon dubbed Duke du 1 'on , or Duke of the asses—which namebecame Dulaney.
MEADThe Meads came from England after I65O and settled coastal
Connecticut, together with Knapps, Closes, and Husted. Of theseven patentees who founded the town of Greenwich, the descendantsof Emily Chauncy Goodrich Mead are descended from five. The Meadswere very prolific— 19 children was not uncommon. They inter-married closely, used Bible names for their children, and werefor many years men of the soil. During the Revolution, AbramMead, (Chart III. ^d) had 15 children. His two oldest were intheir teens, but they went to war, also the husband of the eldestdaughter. Abram stayed home to feed the other 10 and the Revolu-tionary soldiers. All three of the soldiers were killed. I havea poignant memorial to these youths, written at the time of theirdeath.
The Romig Family ~59~
When the British brought the Hessian Soldiers over to help themfight the American colonists a large number of German familiescame over and settled in the area of Lancaster, Pa. These havebeen known for generations as the "Pennsylvania Dutch". Some ofthem are descendants of the Hessian soldiers. They are known for theirupright behavior, their thrift, and their cooking.
Rev. Harry G. Romig, the father of Arthur M. Romig, D.D. (Chart V.)who married Adelaide Helen Anderson, was one of these. He met hiswife, Lucy Alexander, at Park College, Mo., and they went together tothe mission field in China.
Lucy Alexander was of pioneer stock who were early, settlers ofTexas. Her mother, left with small children because of early widow-hood, organized the first school in the Panhandle, and had a large partin the development of the country. Many of her descendants are stillther6. Two sons and a daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Harry Romig haveseen service on the mission field, one son is a doctor, and anothera college professor.
Dri and Mrs. Arthur Romig (Helen Anderson) were in China for tenyears as missionaries. Just before Pearl Harbor, the U. S. governmentordered all mothers with frmilies out of China, so Helen and threechildren took the next to the lpst boat to America. On the day ofPearl Harbor, there was a Japanese soldier on every doorstep of a for**'
eigner. Arthur and his parents were interned, one in central Chinaand the other two in North China. There was no word from them forwell over a year, and no one knew whether they were alive. Thencame the negotiations, and finally the Gripsholm , with all threeon board J At the present writing, Dr. Romig is Presbytery Executive ofthe City of Washington, D. C. , and his sister Ruth Bolton has hadto be evacuated from Africa, with her children. Her husband, EricBolton ( a relative of the Livingstons) has gone back to the Congoarea.

Descent from Odin, through the Koyal Line of theSigarabri, and Charlemagne
The trend of human history, so far back as canbe ascertained, indicates that man first appearedin Asia, and migrated from there in tribal groupsto the rest of the world.
The Eddas of Denmark and Norway, the early ureekand Koman writers—and even Ezekiel and Zepha-niah in the .Bible,—mention these hordes of mi-grating people; so that current students of man T swanderings can probe with some degree of accuracy.
A branch of the Kimmerians (Cimbri) was drivenfrom their home in Scythia (Ukraine) in 654 B.C.by the Getae (Goths). Odin, their leader, laterdeified by the Danes, guided the tribe westwardthrough many vicissitudes, until they reachedJutland (the Danish Peninsula), in 603 B.C.Odin had four sons. Slgoldr succeeded Odin; Baldurbecame king of the Angles; Vedeg and Sigge set-tled along the North Sea and the tribes coalesced.Vedeg T s line apparently terminated shortly. Thetribe took the name of Sigambri (from Sigge),and became the ruling dynasty. Later they werecslled Merovingians from one of their kings. In451 A.D., Clodio, the earliest known king, de-feated the Roman General Aetius, and ruled to theSomme River. He died in 447.
Merowich ruled to 457Childerith; 457-481. His grave was discovered
