Ebony G. Pa erson: Dead Treez Sunday | Noon‐5pm | Fuller Building, 808 Commonwealth Avenue, The Gallery

Dead Treez showcases the ar st’s mixed‐media installa ons and jacquard‐woven photo tapestries that explore class, gender, and race through the lens of popular culture, social media, dress, and personal adornment. Pa erson’s highly embellished, illuminated imagery is intended to cap vate the viewer in order to look beyond her mesmerizing surfaces for deeper meanings.

Influenced by Jamaica’s dancehall culture, Jamaican‐born Pa erson explores the paradoxical rela onship between tradi onal gender codes and the bombas c aesthe cs of dancehall pageantry, presen ng a complex vision of masculinity.  Dead Treez is an immersive medita on on dancehall fashion and culture, regarded as a celebra on of the disenfranchised in postcolonial Jamaica.

Ebony G. Pa erson: Dead Treez was organized by The John Michael Kohler Arts Center and our

gra tude is extended BMO Harris Bank, Herzfeld Founda on, and Sargento Food, Inc., for

major support of this exhibi on and to the Wisconsin Arts Board, with funds from the State of

Wisconsin and the Na onal Endowment for the Arts.

Sunday | 12:30pm & 6pm | Marsh Chapel, 735 Commonwealth Avenue

Mar ne Gu errez: True Story Sunday | Noon‐5pm | College of Fine Arts, 855 Commonwealth Avenue, Jo and James Stone Gallery

True Story presents video and photographic work by the Brooklyn‐based performance ar st

Mar ne Gu errez. Using various media idioms such as classic Hollywood film, fashion

photography, and music videos, Gu errez’s haun ngly seduc ve imagery explores the

construc on of gender and self. In each of her projects Gu errez casts herself in different

roles—from pop star, to Italian heiress, to exo c dancer. While her characters appear familiar,

they are not representa ons of reality; rather, they are hyperbolized manifesta ons of

feminine glamour, desire, and sexuality. Gu errez’s work, always narra ve, calls a en on to

the fic ons that surround and define us—those we internalize through daily life and those we

create for ourselves. The exhibi on is curated by Jordan Karney Chaim, doctoral candidate

and Raymond and Margaret Horowitz Founda on Fellow in American Art at Boston University.
