SSoocciiaall TTeecchhnnoollooggyy:: KKeeeeppiinngg iinn TToouucchhKeeping up with technology can be daunting. The newest phone or mediadevice comes out only months after you bought the “latest and greatest” thing. In order to appeal to a broad audience, cultural facilities also aspire to keep upwith the fast-paced changes of technology. It wasn’t long ago that the typicalart museum may have led you from painting to painting using an audio devicesuch as a wand or headset. Today, technology has shifted to the use of apersonal smart phone, complete with downloadable applications to help aguest have an enriching experience days or months after the museum visit hasended.

In order to reach out to new audiences or to enhance an experience for aseasoned art and museum lover, the Heritage, Culture & the Arts (HCA)Division of the City of Lakewood has implemented new methods tocommunicate and educate. The addition of a Facebook page, cell phone audioprogram called Lakewood by Cell and the future addition of a Twitter feedhave brought the art, theater and museum programs to a new level forLakewood. The City’s new website also helps to communicate with and enrollparticipants in the many offerings of the division, www.Lakewood.org/HCA.

FFAACCEEBBOOOOKKThe museum, art center and theater have a variety of programs, oftenhappening simultaneously. The HCA Facebook page offers the public theopportunity to stay up-to-date on the latest concert, art exhibit opening ormuseum program. Additionally, the page often posts interesting history factsabout Lakewood. For example, did you know the city’s first official name wasJefferson City? “Like” us on Facebook to find out more interesting triviaabout the state’s fifth largest city. Search for Lakewood Heritage, Culture andthe Arts.

LLAAKKEEWWOOOODD BBYY CCEELLLLDo you ever wonder what inspires an artist? Do you wonder about the peopleof the past that shaped Lakewood? With the City’s new Lakewood by Cellprogram, you will find answers to these questions and more. With a quick dialof a specific phone number from your personal cell phone, you can hearinformation about art or history in Lakewood. The cell phone program isavailable during many of the art exhibits at the Lakewood Cultural Center andCivic Center. Lakewood Heritage Center has also added the program to eachof the historic structures at the museum.

TTWWIITTTTEERRDo you tweet? Are you always keen to look at your feed to find out the latestnews? If so, our upcoming Twitter feed will be one not to miss. Stay informedof museum store sales, find out if a performance has any last-minute seatsavailable and amaze your friends with a fast fact from the museum.

Cultural facilities are always looking for ways to keep in touch with or attractnew visitors and participants. As the Heritage, Culture & Arts Division of theCity of Lakewood enhances and expands its presence in the realm oftechnology and social media, we welcome your feedback by [email protected].

With a banjoand fiddle, one might think they’re traditional bluegrass, butthink again. Cello and hand drums round out the group, creating a truly new sound. A little bit bluegrass, a little bitfolk, a little bit classical and whole lot of original, HarpethRising is a band to watch.

American rock band Steely Dan’s popularity peaked in the late1970s, with the release of seven albums blending elements ofjazz, rock, funk, R&B and pop. Rolling Stone called them “theperfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies.” The band’smusic is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structuresand harmonies with a revolving cast of rock and pop studiomusicians. Kid Charlemagne faithfully recreates the SteelyDan sound, providing a fun trip down memory lane.
