ATTENDANCE

Code po5200 Adopted September 4, 2018 Last Revised June 19, 2019

5200 - ATTENDANCE The School Board, as an agency of the State, is required to enforce regular attendance of students. The Board recognizes that the presence in the classroom enables the student to participate in instruction, class discussions, and other related activities. As such, regular attendance and classroom participation are integral to instilling incentives for the student to excel. Attendance shall mean to be physically present in a school or at another location where the school’s educational program is being conducted during regular school hours on a day in which the educational program in which the student is enrolled is being offered. Attendance shall be required of all School Corporation students, except those exempted under other provisions of State law, during the days and hours that the school is in session. Exceptions to compulsory attendance that shall be recognized by the school corporation as provided by State statute are:

A. service as a page or honoree of the general assembly (I.C. 20-33-2-14)

B. service on a precinct election board or helper to a political candidate on the date of an election (I.C. 20-33-2-15)

C. subpoena to appear in court as a witness in a judicial proceeding (I.C. 20- 33-2-16)

D. service in active duty with the National Guard for not more than ten (10) days (I.C. 20-33-2-17)

E. participating as a member of the Indiana wing of the civil air patrol for not more than five (5) days (I.C. 20-33-2-17.2)

F. exhibiting or participating in the Indiana State Fair for educational purposes by a student or member of the student’s household (I.C. 20-33- 2-17.7) The student must be in good academic standing as determined by the Corporation. Parents must request the absence in writing, it must be approved in writing by the principal, and it may not exceed five (5) days.

G. participating in an educationally related non-classroom activity which is consistent with and promotes educational philosophy and goals of the School Corporation, facilitates the attainment of specific educational objectives, is part of the goals and objectives of an approved course or curriculum, represents a unique educational opportunity, cannot reasonably occur without interrupting the school day, and is approved in advance by the school principal (I.C. 20-33-2-17.5)

For any of these exceptions a student shall not be recorded as absent from school. The Superintendent shall require, from the parent of each student or from an adult student who has been absent for any reason, a written or verbal statement of the cause for such absence. The Board reserves the right to verify such statements and to investigate the cause of any school absence. The Board considers the following for excused absences:

A. illness/appointment verified by parent/guardian or physician

B. required court attendance

C. professional appointments – Parents are encouraged to schedule medical, dental, legal, and other necessary appointments other than during school hours. When appointments are necessary during the school day, the student shall report back to school immediately after the appointment with a signed statement from the doctor, dentist, lawyer, counselor, etc.

D. death in the immediate family or of a relative

E. observation or celebration of a bona fide religious holiday in accordance with Policy 5223

Page 6: Bremen Elementary Middle School - Amazon Web Services › prod... · please watch the local news or sign up for closing alerts at wndu.com or wsbt.com to be informed of any school

F. maternity

G. military connected families’ absences related to deployment and return

H. such other good cause as may be acceptable to the Superintendent or permitted by law

I. five (5) days, per year, for family activities verified by parent/guardian An unexcused absence is any absence not covered under the definition of excused absence or an exception to compulsory attendance. An out-of-school suspension shall not be considered an unexcused absence. Repeated instances of unexcused absences may result in disciplinary action up to suspension or expulsion of a student. Truancy is defined as absence from school without permission of the parent. The Superintendent or an attendance officer having jurisdiction shall report a child who is habitually absent from school to an intake officer of the juvenile court or the Department of Child Services. The Superintendent shall develop administrative guidelines for the attendance of students which:

A. ensure a school session which is in conformity with the requirements of the law;

B. ensure that students absent for any excusable reason have an opportunity to make up work they missed;

C. govern the keeping of attendance records in accordance with the rules of the State Board;

D. ensure that any student who, due to a specifically identifiable physical or mental impairment, exceeds or may exceed the Corporation's limit on excused absence is referred for evaluation for eligibility either under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Such guidelines should provide that a student's grade in any course is based on his/her performance in the instructional setting and is not reduced for reasons of conduct. If a student violates the attendance or other rules of the school, s/he should be disciplined appropriately for the misconduct, but his/her grades should be based upon what the student can demonstrate s/he has learned. Such guidelines also shall provide for the reporting to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles those students who have been suspended for the second time during a school year, expelled, or excluded for misconduct. The Superintendent shall ensure that the administrative guidelines on attendance properly address the matter of truancy by including a process which:

A. identifies the habitual truant, that is, a student who is chronically absent by having unexcused absences from school for more than ten (10) school days in one (1) school year;

B. investigates the cause(s) of his/her truant behavior;

C. considers, when appropriate, modification of his/her educational program to meet particular needs which may be causing the truancy;

D. ensures that truant students are disciplined in accordance with the Corporation's policies and administrative guidelines on student discipline;

E. provides for reporting to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles those students who are habitual truants. The Superintendent also shall ensure that the Board's policy on attendance and the Corporation's administrative guidelines are made available to all parents and adult students. © Neola 2017

Talk about the importance of showing up to school

everyday.

Make attendance an expectation.

Help your child maintain daily routines.

Expect homework completion, good night’s

sleep, etc.

Don’t cause your child to be out of school.

Avoid appointments during school hours, and don’t let your child stay

home by choice.

More than nine school days missed can lead to disengagement, and cause a student to get off track to graduation.

By grade six, absenteeism is one of three signs a student may drop out of high school.

By grade nine, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than grade eight test scores. Missing 10 percent, or about 18 days, of a school year can drastically impact a student’s academic success. Students who were chronically absent in kindergarten and grade one are far less likely to read proficiently at the end of grade three.

Know the school’s attendance policy and check on your child’s attendance to verify absences are not piling up. Talk to teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior in your child. These changes could be tied to something happening at school. If you are having trouble getting your child to school, ask for help from school officials, after school programs, other parents, or community agencies.

DID YOU KNOW?• Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.

• Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.

• Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.

• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.

• Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work.

Help Your Child Succeed in School:Build the Habit of Good Attendance EarlySchool success goes hand in hand with good attendance!

WHAT YOU CAN DO• Set a regular bed time and morning routine.

• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.

• Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.

• Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help her transition.

• Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.

• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.

• Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.

• Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

When Do Absences Become a Problem?

CHRONIC ABSENCE 18 or more days

WARNING SIGNS 10 to 17 days

SATISFACTORY 9 or fewer absences

Note: These numbers assume a 180-day school year.

Our season is divided into two stages: Build Season and Competition Season. In

order to accomplish our mission, each stage provides students with the opportunity

to be on different sub-teams.

STAGE 1: BUILD SEASON Supply Manager—members of this sub-team are in charge of maintaining a

clean build station and keeping the parts organized at all times. They also work

directly with the Design & Build Team to assist in retrieving needed parts for the

robot.

Awards Team—members of this sub-team study and dissect all of the possible

local, state, and world event awards. They read rubrics, watch online example

videos, create Q&A scripts, and present information to the rest of the team. They also

film and edit the team STEM Research Project.

Documentation Team—members of this sub-team create and maintain the

team’s engineering notebook (composed of design notes, programming notes,

strategies, game rules, schedule, and competition details). An organized and

appealing engineering notebook is required to qualify for the Design Award and the

Excellence Award (both Worlds-qualifying awards).

Design & Build Team—members of this sub-team brainstorm game strategies

and robot designs to put the team in the best position to succeed. Once designed,

members of this sub-team build the robot using parts from our VEX IQ kits.

List, in order of preference, which sub-team (for the Build Season) you would want to

be on.

STAGE 2: COMPETITION SEASON Driver—members of this sub-team know the ins and outs of the robot. They drive

the robot during practices and competitions. They must have good sportsmanship

and driving skills and be willing to give up some recess time to practice sometimes.

Strategizing with alliances is essential as well.

Scout Team—members of this sub-team research rankings of competing teams

especially the week prior to a competition. At competitions, they meet with alliances

to discuss their robot capabilities.

Score Keeper—members of this sub-team intently watch each of our matches,

breaking down and tallying up the points we (and our alliances) score.

Pit Crew—members of this sub-team check over (using a checklist) the robot after

each match. They fix any issues they find with the robot. One member of this sub-

team will be appointed “Pit Boss,” which is the leader who administers the final

check before sending the robot back out to competition.

Competition Manager—members of this sub-team work closely with the coach

during the competition. They only leave the coach’s side to run errands or to find the

drivers for their next match. These members pay close attention to the competition

schedule and notify the drivers of when their next match begins.

List, in order of preference, which sub-team (for the Competition Season) you would

want to be on.

Robotics Scenarios

Scenario: You had many ideas and none of them were chosen by your teammates.

What steps could you take to move on and still be a productive member of your

team?

Scenario: At practice, you have finished your specific task for the day. What would

you do next?

Scenario: At a competition, you overhear coaches, adults, or students speaking

negatively of Bremen Robotics (cheating, misbehaving, etc). What would you say or

do that would represent Bremen proudly as well as defend the Bremen Robotics

Team?

Scenario: You are on a team with more than one strong personality (maybe even

your own). Things become heated while discussing changes and modifications to the

robot. How would you keep your team calm and guide teammates to work well

together?

Bremen Robotics Team.

• Students will be chosen based on the quality of their application, experience,

letter of recommendation, academic standing, classroom behavior, and grade

level test scores.

• Students must attend regular team practices and competitions.

If chosen, in order to maintain a spot on the team:

• Students must consistently attend team practices and competitions.

• Students must be attentive and respectful to the coach and teammates.

• Students must maintain good grades.

• Students must have positive classroom behavior.

• Students are expected to work diligently and collaboratively with other

members of the team.

• Parents must provide transportation.

I give my son/daughter permission to participate in the after-school Bremen

Robotics program if chosen. I understand that my child must follow all requirements

to maintain a spot on the team if chosen.

Parents:

As the coach, I have the task of selecting team members based

upon the above criteria. Because of the high demand but

limited space, your child may not be chosen despite being a

good candidate or despite being on the team previously. If

this is the case, please use it as an opportunity to teach a

valuable life lesson about overcoming adversity. Calling me

or the school to complain will not give your child a better

chance of making the team.

Thank you for understanding.
