3. New Organization Dear Colleagues:

In August, the Center for Scholarly and Creative Excellence moved from the Brooks College to report directly to the Provost. With this

move, the CSCE was expanded to oversee the Office of Sponsored Programs (Grants Development and Administration), Research

Protections (Human Subject [HRRC] and Animal [IUCAC]), and the Office of Undergraduate Research. This change allows us to better

fulfill our mission of encouraging, facilitating, and supporting the Grand Valley community in its scholarly pursuits.

The CSCE is driven to develop an environment that facilitates world-class discoveries and innovations. We do this in partnership with

you. So give us your feedback. Let us know whether our office is meeting your needs.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Robert Smart

6. New Graduate Assistant We welcome Curtis Holt, our Technology Graduate Assistant, as the newest

member of our team. Curtis is responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of our website and all other technology-related needs. Initially,

Curtis will focus on designing a dynamic website for the Center for Scholarly

and Creative Excellence (CSCE) which involves merging six separate offices

under the CSCE umbrella. Curtis graduated from Western Michigan University with a BS in Computer Science and is well on his way to completing

a Masters degree in Computer Information Systems.

5. GLAD Team Meeting Our first GLAD Team meeting of the academic year is set for Friday, September 24th, 2010, at WGVU Studios, 301 W. Fulton

The Grant Leadership Advisory & Development Team (GLAD Team) is composed of faculty and staff who are considered to be

grant leaders at GVSU, such as successful grant proposal writers, grant managers, directors of grant-funded departments, and

finance and accounting representatives. The GLAD Team meets twice per semester to review internal policies related to grant

seeking and management, new trends in sponsored research, changes in government compliance issues, and many other relevant topics.

4. August GRC Meeting Office of Sponsored Programs staff attended a Grants Resource Center external funding conference held in Washington, D.C. on

August 22nd through 25th. The conference included one-on-one meetings with federal program officers, sessions on agency priorities and federal and private funding opportunities, and strategies for integrating research and sponsored programs with the

mission of your institution.

If you would like to receive the information provided at these meetings, please contact our office.

NIH Freezes Stem Cell Research

On August 23, 2010, Judge Royce Lamberth of the U.S. District Court in Washington, DC issued a preliminary injunction against

federal funding for stem cell research, which stopped the review of about 62 grant applications, and suspended another 22 grant applications slotted for funding in September. National Institutes of Health (NIH) director Francis Collins told reporters that the

Human embryonic stem cell research has been a contentious issue for two decades. President George Bush banned federal funding for the development of new stem lines in 2001, but allowed research using the 23 stem cell lines that were approved at that time. In

March 2009, President Barack Obama expanded funding, which fostered many new stem cell projects nationwide and NIH

approval of 75 new stem cell lines.

Collins said initially that scientists who have already received funds for studies involving human embryonic stem cells could

continue their work, while the U.S. Department of Justice announced plans to quickly appeal the federal court ruling. But as the

American Association for the Advancement of Science reported in the August 30, 2010 edition of Science, NIH has since ordered scientists to suspend their current work on stem cells. An August 27, 2010 letter from Michael Gottesman, deputy director for

intramural research, was obtained by Science

determined that the recent preliminary injunction ordered by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in the

matter of Sherley v. Sebelius is applicable to the use of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) in intramural research projects. In light of this determination, effective today August 27, 2010, all intramural scientists who use hESC lines should initiate procedures

competitive the funding was for these grants, the success of the AWRI faculty is truly impressive. The

outcomes from these projects help in the continued protection and restoration of the Great Lakes, as well as helping educate the public about critical problems facing the Great Lakes. Ultimately, our goal is to a make
