Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program 2021

What is BYOD?  

All secondary students at Emmanuel Anglican College are required to bring their own technology to 

school each day. 

 

With  the growth of  readily accessible  technology  in  the home,  students choosing  to use different 

platforms  such  as Mac  and  PC  and  the  broad  range  of  user  needs,  from  general  users  to  highly 

specialised users with specific learning interests, it was decided that it is no longer effective to provide 

all  students with  the  same  laptop and  so  the College moved  to a Bring Your Own Device  (BYOD) 

program for all secondary students. 

  

What type of device can we bring?  

The table below sets out  the minimum and maximum specifications that the College recommends 

when  families  are  choosing  a  device  that  best  supports  their  child’s  learning. We  recommend  a 

Windows device but  recognise  that some students prefer an Apple device. Students studying HSC 

Music, Photography, Design Technology or Industrial Technology Multimedia will require a device with 

the higher specifications set out below.

Where to from here?  

A range of devices in a range of price categories meet the minimum required device specifications.  

Families may  purchase  a  suitable  device  from  any  supplier  they  choose.  The  School  Locker,  our 

uniform supplier, has created a web portal which can be accessed via their website. Devices which 

meet the minimum specifications can be viewed on the portal. Don’t forget to  log  in and add your 

existing card or generate a Student Advantage number in the My Account section so that you receive 

special education pricing.

The purchase of a device is a major decision and a significant expense but remember a good quality 

device should last three years. The School Locker are able to offer finance and leasing options. Please 

speak to one of their staff in store for additional information. 

 

If  you  are  concerned  the device  is  going  to be broken or  lost,  you may wish  to  consider  specific 

accidental damage  insurance for the device. You may be able to specifically  list the device on your 

home contents insurance or you can purchase an Accidental Damage Protection when you purchase 

your device. 

 

   

  

  

What is expected of you?  

Students are expected to:  

bring their device to school each day; 

charge the device at home each night; 

look after the physical condition of the 

device; 

maintain a  current anti‐virus  software 

licence; and  

back‐up all data.  

 

Students are expected to adhere to the Student Electronic Communications Code of Conduct and User 

Agreement that they have signed upon enrolment or at the commencement of Year 5.  We encourage 

parents to discuss the expectations set out in the code of conduct with their child.  

 

The parents’  role  is  to supervise  their child on  the device at home  to prevent students viewing or downloading content that is age restricted and may not be suitable for them. The College does not recommend that there are any games loaded onto devices as it is an educational tool. Applications such as iMessage and Facetime are not allowed during College hours. This can be restricted on your child’s device, which we strongly recommend as it can cause social issues. Apps like Instagram, Snap Chat and other social media apps are not recommended.  We encourage parents to educate their child about the dangers of social media and the Internet. The College will provide educational opportunities for parents to support safe and proper use of technology.   

Anti‐Virus Software  

Please also note that current anti‐virus software will have to be installed on the device before it will 

connect to the College network. If the student's private device does not have a purchased and up to 

date antivirus software  installed, the College  is authorised to  install antivirus on the private device 

using the College's site license.  

What is provided by the College?  

We will provide:  

connection  to  the  College  wireless 

network; 

internet  access  for  use  while  at  the 

College; 

training and support for students;  

Microsoft Office Professional Suite; 

Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.

Once students have been allocated a network username and password they can connect their own 

device to the network by clicking on “Connect Your Device” on the “Online Services” Menu on the 

College website at www.eac.nsw.edu.au or by clicking on the following link.

The  College  will  provide  reasonable  support  to  ensure  students  are  connected  to  the  network, however, the College does not manage, support, own or warrant the device – it’s your device.  If you have any problems, the College IT staff will be available during the first few days of term to answer questions and provide assistance connecting students to the network.
