For More Than 40 Years, Weve Protected Shorelines,Rebuilt Beaches, and Reclaimed Land From The SeaFighting and controlling the power of water is a daunting task. But more than 40 years ago, we developed atechnology that could be used to stop storm damage, protect the environment, build custom structures, andeven build islands where they didnt exist before. Geotube containment technology is a proven, cost-effective

method for a variety of shoreline protection and marine construction projects. Geotubetechnology has beenused to produce sand dune cores; wetlands and other habitats; jetties, dikes, and groynes; underwaterstructuresand to even raise brand new islands from under water.

Developed using input from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Geotubetechnology is cost-effective,durable, easy to install, and highly flexible. Its been proven in applications around the world and is installedin more than 50 countries. Better yet, Geotubetechnology has literally saved millions of dollars forcompanies and individuals.

Sand Dune CoresStopping Beach Erosion and Property Damage

Geotube containment technology has proven to be exceptionallyvaluable for protecting shorelines from erosion, particularly during

hurricanes and tropical storms. The process is simple: a largetube made of a specially engineered textile is filled with sand andburied under the beach. When rough weather threatens, the tubeholds the sand and soil in place, preventing erosion and propertydamage.

Geotubetechnology uses geotextilecontainers up to hundreds of feet inlength. In most cases, installation ispermanentand invisible. However, when necessary, units can easily beremoved.

In fact, one of the advantages ofGeotube geocontainment technologyis that the gentle original slope ofthe beach can be recreated. Thisimproves the aesthetics of theshoreline and also aids wildlife by providing a natural-seeminghabitatand blocking lights from shore that can confuse seaturtles and other creatures.

    When erosion threatened Atlantic Citys

famous Boardwalk, millions of dollars of

property were at stake. Hurricanes cutaway so much of the sand that waves

were literally washing over the Boardwalk

    itself. But with Geotube geocontainment

technology installed to stop erosion and

allow the sand to build upon itself, there

is now more than 150 feet of beach

    (complete with oat-covered dunes)

between the Boardwalk and the water.

This project has been in place for over

10 years, and is still doing its job.

Along the Bolivar Peninsula in Texas,a Geotubetechnology project used18,000 linear feet of Geotube units to

protect homes from damage from aseries of tropical storms. After TropicStorm Allison in 2001, residents reporthat not a single dollar of propertydamage occurred behind the line ofdefense created by the Geotube

    units installed along the beach.

The project was so successful thatanother 15,000 linear feet were instalToday, more than 20 miles of Texasshoreline are protected with Geotubetechnology.

    Ideal for Individual Homeowners

The simplicity of the process lends itself well to commercialproperties and homeowner associations whose members arelooking for solutions to erosion problems. In fact, Geotube

technology has been purchased and installed by many

homeowners to protect their property and build up shorelines.A Geotube Shoreline Protection System can be installed ina short peroid of time. It has qualified for installation underemergency permitting allowed for repairing storm damage.Once installed, the Geotube

unit is completely buried, and helps contribute to agently sloping shoreline.

A single Geotube unit canactually protect severalhomes. In many cases, homeowners have worked

with each other to get theprotection they need andreduce their costs.Homeowner associationscan help coordinate effortsbetween members for propershoreline protection usinggeocontainment technology.

In many coastal areas, temporary permits are now in placethat allow immediate installation of Geotube geocontainmenttechnology to protect homes that are in danger.

Shamrock Island, off the coast of Texas, was literally eroding into the sea. To

reclaim the land, 3,000 linear feet ofGeotube units were installed alongthe islands shoreline to provide erosionprotection and to create new wetlands.

After the Geotube units were in place, sand was pumped in behind them tocreate wetlands areas. Marsh grasswas then planted to develop the area intoa bird sanctuary. The project has workedso well that it has been recognized acrossTexas and the nation as an example ofenvironmental success.

Wetlands CreationAn Effective, Sound Way To Build Habitats

Because Geotube containment technology is simple,cost-effective, and environmentally sound, it has been

used in many areas for rebuilding wetlands habitats forbirds and other species.

Geotube units can be installed quickly, and they can be used to create milesof artificial shoreline if needed, whileallowing sand to naturally collectbehind them. Units can be covered orleft exposed, with proper UV protection, and provide erosion protection in alltypes of weather.

Island CreationMaking Land Rise From The Sea

Geotube containment technology has been used for manyambitious projects, but perhaps none as bold as creating

    entirely new land. Geotube

technology has been used forisland creation because of its ease of installation, ruggedness, and cost-effectiveness.

Miles of Geotube containers can beused to produce durable shorelinesthat can be filled in behind the unitsto produce stable land for building.Skyscrapers have been constructedon property reclaimed from the seaby using Geotubetechnology.

    Geotube containers can be stacked

several high to produce the elevationnecessary for backfilling and landcreation. The containers can thenbe covered with rip rap, sand, or othersoil to hide them and produce naturallooking shorelines.

BreakwatersChanging Waters Force From Bad To Good

Wave action has long been a problem for many beach communities,as it can erode beaches or place sand where it is not needed. To

    address this, Geotube

containment technology has been used atlocations around the world.

Geotube containers can be placed offshore in areas where waveaction is causing damage. The units disrupt the water flow andwaves, and the size and location ofthe structures can be engineered soas to encourage beach replenishmentby the altered waves now reachingthe beach. Many communities haveadded yards of shoreline with thesimple, inexpensive installation ofGeotubetechnology installed

    offshore.

By using Geotubetechnology tochange wave patterns, millions ofdollars have been saved in reducedproperty damage or expense forrenourishing beaches.

west coast. Over the past 30 years, morethan $10 million has been spent onrenourishing Upham Beach, only to havethe sand begin washing away again withthe next storm.

But Geotubetechnology has eliminatedthe problem. Special T-head groynes200 feet long and 190 feet wide wereconstructed to break up wave action.Immediately sand began accumulatingbehind the T-groynes and renourishingthe beach. Beachgoers walk along the

No erosion occurred along the beachprotected by Geotubetechnology, anbeach width began increasing almostimmediately. Geotubetechnology prto be an extremely cost effective metof rebuilding the beach.

    GroynesSimple and Effective

Groynes are a quick and economical method of shorelineprotection that is ideal for Geotube containment technology.

These short, perpendicular extensions from the shoreline stoplateral drift of sand and allow beaches to renourish with littleor no maintenance.

Because Geotube units can be customsized, groyne applications can bedesigned for optimum performance.Geotube units can be filled withsand from the area when allowed, simplifying the construction process. If regulations require fill material tocome from another location, the unitscan still be filled less expensively than

other construction methods.Geotube containers being positioned

    JettiesVersatility In Construction

Geotube containment technology is often used for jettyconstruction, because of its flexibility in design, cost-

effectiveness, and speed of installation. In many areas, there is not enough rock nearby to allow jetties to bebuilt from stone, and Geotubetechnology can be usedso that sand and soil from the immediate area producea stable structure. This can savesignificant amounts of money overtrucking in materials.

Geotubetechnology also allowsgreat versatility in construction.Because units can be custom sized tovarious lengths and circumferences, less material may be needed. Also,

because Geotube units can be filledquickly in place, construction timecan be reduced dramatically.

To keep the individual 70' longGeotube units straight during filling (whilebeing pounded by waves), a steel positionframe was used. A total of 6,000 lin/ft of45' circumference Geotube units formthe core of the jetties which were thencovered with rock to provide permanentprotection. The Geotube units werestrong enough so that heavy construction

machinery could drive on top as thestructures were being built.

Underwater StructuresContainment Systems That Can Be Dropped In Place

Another aspect of Geotube containment technology is theGeocontainer unit, which is specially designed to be filled

before being placed in the water. Special split bottom bargesare used to fill the containers, which are sewn shut once filled, then reinforced with rope ties.

When the barge moves to the properposition, the bottom opens and thecontainer slides through and settlesto the bottom. Containers can beplaced in position with a high degreeof accuracy.

Geocontainer units used forunderwater structures can create

dikes, close openings, containdredge spoils or other materials,or change water and wave action.
