COMMODORE’S CORNER

Bill Barnes, [email protected]

The Cruising Season is in full swing. Judy and Doug Rose have done a wonderful job organizing the

schedule. June is a busy month with Sarah’s Creek, Summer Sailstice, and Two Week cruises coming up.

BBSA was well represented at Southern Bay Race Week. All participants, winners and non-winners, did a

fantastic job and represented our organization well. Further racing reminders are Broad Bay Regatta

June 27th for one design, and Leo Wardrup Memorial Cape Charles Cup coming up Aug 15-16. If you are

not racing, please consider volunteering for these events. A lot of “behind the scenes” stuff has to

happen to make these events a success and it can only be done with help from the membership.

The Cock Island Race is only a couple of weeks away, on June 20th. This is a wonderful event for both

Cruisers and Racers alike.

Our next scheduled meeting is July 15th. There is no meeting in June.

Whether racing or cruising safety must always be a consideration. Wearing a PFD should be mandatory

for children and a serious consideration for adults.

Good luck, good health, and happy sailing.

RACING NEWS Scott Almond, [email protected]

Jerry Pattenaude, [email protected]

PHRF Racing News:

BBSA was well represented (22 boats out of 94) in the highly competitive Southern Bay Race Week held on the weekend following Memorial Day. Three great days of racing in nice breeze and plenty of sunshine made everyone drag their feet into work on Monday morning (and made some of us hit the Advil bottle a little more than usual). Congratulations go out to Mike Veraldi (QUICKY) for 2nd place in the J/24 fleet, Walter Boatwright (PUFF CARD) for 1st place in PHRF N, Cary Hardesty (LONA) for 2nd place in PHRF C, Larry Bryant (WHISPER) for 1st place and Bob Howell (CYMRU) for 3rd place in the Cruising 1 fleet, and Bill Barnes (RESTLESS) for 1st place in the Cruising 2 fleet. Kudos to all of our BBSA skippers who participated in THE TOP SHELF of our area's competitive regattas! Full results can be found at: www.blacksealcup.com .

Congratulations goes out to Ken Copeland, Carl Gade, and Alvin Girardin (BLACK WIDOW) for coming in 1st place in PHRF C and winning the Cape Henry Cup, BBSA's first big race of the year that was held on May 16th! BBSA skippers came in 1st place in three of the five fleets. Weather couldn't have been much better (unlike at the 140th Preakness Stakes) and the race committee (Hank Almond, Don and Monica Larsson, and myself) enjoyed hanging out on the beach at Ft. Monroe waiting for the 30 boats to finish the race and still made it home in time to watch American Pharoah spank the field following a huge downpour right before the race. A very special thank you to BBSA's Cruising Captain, Doug Rose, for his help on the race committee and for providing the signal boat for the start of the race! Here's BBSA's top finishers (full results are posted on our homepage: www.broadbaysailing.org ):

BBSA’s Broad Bay Regatta (June 27th), from Jerry Pattenaude: Dear BBSA club members; I would like to put on a respectable Small boat regatta for BBSA and in order to do this I need some help from our members. I would like to see sailors on the water but I also need some club support on the shore and a few race committee helpers. If you can spare a little time on Saturday to help our club, I am sure you will be satisfied with the results from your effort. I would like to have someone be the Grill Meister for hotdogs after the regatta. One person to help with registration. One or two persons to help with handling the small boats on the dock, when we are launching and retrieving. Perhaps we could have an activity guru to set up a volley ball game. This could even be going on while we are on the water. 2 Sea Lawyers for Protest Committee. On the water Scott Almond will be our Race committee. Thank you Scott. We could use 3 to 4 more crew for committee duties, i.e. flag raiser, time keeper, photographer and official scorer. Does anyone know someone with the skills to run a safety boat? (Does anyone have a safety boat? That would be awesome) If there is one of these activities that you could lend a hand and do for the club, I know we would all have an enjoyable afternoon. I would like to take this time to remember Randy Pugh who offered to help me with this regatta even though his health wasn’t the best and then went on to meet his Maker before he could help. May his soul Rest in Peace. The specifics about this regatta and my contact information is in this month’s Banter. Please take the time respond.

Copied from Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use, from John and Lin McCarthy: SBRW 2015. MAD HATTER, Bob Fleck’s Olson 911s, takes home 2015 SBRW BLACK Seal Cup. Bob Fleck, residing in Hardyville, Virginia, put his name on the Black Seal Cup winners list for the third time at Southern Bay Race Week this past weekend. Bob, sailing his S2 7.9, Horizon, shared the Cup with Ben Weeks (Rumble) in 2012, the “tornado year”, and won it outright in 2013, again with Horizon. This year Fleck sailed Mad Hatter in PHRF B, and won the most competitive fleet of 15 boats by one point. The top spot came down to the last race on the last day. The wind gods brought an easterly racing wind for the three courses each day after delays early on. Ninety-four (94) boats raced in the event. RESULTS: PHRF DIVISION – PHRF A (15 boats): 1. Craig Wright, Afterthough; 2. Sledd Shelhorse, Meridian X; 3. Eric Schwab, Dorothy Kate. PHRF B (15 boats): 1. Bob Fleck, Mad Hatter; 2. Ben and Michele Weeks, Rumble; 3. Rusty Burshell, Cool Change. PHRF C (13 boats): 1. David and Jacki Meiser, Easy Button; 2. Carey Hardesty, Lona; 3. Paul and Julie Ann Wash, Cheeky Monkey. PHRF Non-Spin (7 boats): 1. Walt Boatwright, Puff Card; 2. Jake Brodersen, Midnight Mistress; 3. Don Barfield and Steve Smith, Checko. ONE DESIGN DIVISION – J24 (6 boats): 1. Ron Medlin, Bash; 2. Mike Veraldi, Quicky; 3. Alan Bomar, Roundabout. J70 (8 boats): 1. Jenn and Ray Wulff, Joint Custody; 2. Thomas Bowen, Reach Around; 3. Latane Montague, Full Monty. VIPER 640 (10 boats): 1. Tyler Moore, Tumbling Dice; 2. Mary Ewenson, Terminally Pretty; 3. Henry Amthor and Dave Eberwine, Viper 227. CRUISING DIVISION: CRU (10 boats): 1. Larry Bryant, Whisper; 2. Jim Beaudry, Black Dog; 3. Bob Howell, Cymru. CRU2 (10 boats): 1. Bill Barnes, Restless; 2. Andrew Arola,Nu, Pogodi!; 2. Chuck Thompson, Packer Tacker. Event Chairman, Jack Pope; Principal Race Officer (Event and PHRF Div), John McCarthy; Race Officer (One Design Div), Brian Deibler; Race Officer (Cruising), Tom Connors; Official Scorer, Dariene DeRyder; Signal Boat (PHRF), Bill and Eleanor Brown; Signal Boat (One Design), Jim Shoemaker; Signal Boat (Cruising), John Ritter; Mark Boats, Dave Hamilton, Joe Lupton, Bill and David Gibbings, Tom and Jane Fowler, Marshall Findley, Noel Clinard. Chief Judge, Eric Rasmussen. For complete, detailed results, please go to http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=1250 SBRW Regatta Notes: When the US Navy Submarine entering the harbor on Saturday “challenged” the SBRW boats finishing the distance race… he won. When announced as PHRF Boat of the Day award winner, Checko co-owner, Steve Smith (with Don Barfield), in his excitement, literally dashed his full beer cup to the ground and scaled the awards platform. “Heck”, the Checko Syndicate, said later, grinning, “We’re an inspiration – if we can do it, they all can!” Volunteers manning the drink tickets table and the beer truck taps have calluses on their fingers and bulging biceps, respectively, this morning. The Friday Scavenger Hunt (conducted on the water while awaiting wind) involved thongs and tramp stamps – now, from the racers comes a suggestion for a regatta T-Shirt to commemorate the SBRW Hunt, much like the keeper Tornado tee of 2012. On the final day, racers eased the pain for motorist backed up on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel – 94 crewed up sailboats paraded past on their way to the Sunday race courses, all off of Ocean View (Norfolk). If you have a Black Seal foam hat, WEAR IT - distance race finish line caller Buddy DeRyder did! The HYC Saturday night fajitas bar was a racer gastronomical favorite. SBRW Bag Ladies handed out more than 200 welcome bags to skippers and event sponsors. Everyone knew to refer to the special area by the small hoist as the Viper Nest. Thomas Bowen’s (Reach Around, J70) travel rig become a landmark on the host HYC property… and known for its Mudslides. For more SBRW tall tales, talk to your racer friends. Each year southern Bay sailmakers, North, Winters, Doyle, Ullman, and Baxter sponsor the SBRW Boat of the Day awards (and more), thank them when you visit them. Next year, the weekend after Memorial Day, SBRW 2016 will open Thursday night June 2, racing June 3-5, 2016. Y’all come racing!

Cape Charles Bloody Mary Cruise Recap, from Andy Spittler The voyage from Bay Point Marina (Little Creek) was as expected... I sailed until I ran out of wind and patience. So, thanks to Mr. Yanmar, and Otto the Autopilot... it was an uneventful trip to the Cape Charles Town Harbor. The following vessels were present: Seaquel, Sea-ductive, Modus Vivendi, Virginia Breeze, Summer Wine, Nuance, L’Attitude, E, Coriolis, and one drive by Larry Hold and Karen Ives. Afternoon entertainment was provided by the Crabby Blues Festival, attended by the crews of Modus Vivendi, Virginia Breese, and Nuance. I hear we proved ourselves well in the crab consumption category. I (Andy) took a nap. Later on, the evening started out with hor d'oeures and drinks on Coriolis. Coriolis being a dog friendly boat, was soon filled with sailors and their furry crew. Rummy (the ships dog) had a great time hanging with the other maritime pooches. Tons of food took its toll, and Coriolis begged off Kelly’s but finished up with an ice cream. The patient foodies got a table at Kelly’s for a late dinner. After dining and dessert, Virginia Breeze was accepting guests and the conversation, snacks, and drinks continued to flow… Have to admit, that weekend was a diet buster. Sunday morning, a Bloody Mary breakfast as promised. Thanks to the Admiral (Carmen) we had muffins, croissants, fruit, and the required dining on the dock buffet ancillary snacks. Ya'll lucked out, if it had been up to me, it would have been all alcohol. Finally, the fleet untied the lines and we were underway. Sergio on Modus Vivendi, and Chip on Virginia Breeze reported a pleasant day sail back to Little Creek. Thanks to everyone who came and participated. As always, it's a great time because of the wonderful friends we have through BBSA. Andy and Carmen s/v Coriolis

Memorial Day Weekend Cruise Recap, from Doug Rose After weather forecast induced fits and starts, the Memorial Day Cruise got under way under flawless skies heading for an evening anchorage in Deep Creek off the James River. The wind was erratic, delivering rail down sailing as well as a measure of motor sailing. Attending boats were Mariah, Modus Vivendi, Dreamtime, Shangri-La, Rhumba, Summer Wine, Nuance, as well as new members Eric and Kathy Brinsfield on their Beneteau "Flight Risk". Everyone found a comfortable spot to drop the hook and the group gathered on spacious Shangri-La for a happy hour followed by dinner aboard for most. Sunday was another easy day cruising to the Norfolk Yacht & CC. We lost Nuance and Summer Wine to other destinations, but picked up Joel and Donna Penne on their Caliber 40 "Seaquel". The day included the NY&CC Memorial Day flag raising ceremony, followed by our dockside happy hour and an excellent group dinner in the club for most. Monday found everyone heading to their respective docks in a moderate southerly breeze. If your timing was good you were in the vicinity of the carrier piers when the outbound Mexican tall ship "Cuauhtemoc" passed the pier with all ceremony flags flying and the cadets at attention on the yards. A salute to the decorated carrier and a return salute put a nice touch to the end of the weekend. Doug Rose
