ASTRA2Connect – Show case "eSchools in Albania"
Purpose: to provide all primary schools with basic internet
access.
Targeting schools outside the reach of terrestrial coverage;
typically these are in most need of assistance, due to:
- lack of finance and know-how;
- located in underdeveloped and deserted parts of the
country;
- low cost access to education;
- access to SW and basic training.
Solution: In Albania, ASTRA2Connect is used by Starsat to
deploy a World Bank funded eSchool network.

ASTRA2Connect – Show Case "Internet Kiosk" in Africa
Purpose: to bring internet access to the otherwise remote
communities.
Many African communities have little or no access
to basic services, due to:
- geographic and social isolation;
- 90% live without electricity;
- 98% have no internet access;
- other social services, like education health,
community development etc are not available as a result.
Solution: The RIK is a self contained solution developed by
Intersat Africa, using ASTRA2Connect.

ASTRA2Connect - Solution Overview
30
ASTRA2Connect for Communities - Product definition
The product is aimed at providing broadband access via satellite with one single satellite dish to aggregation points of traffic. This enables access to broadband internet for all end users connected to the aggregation point via a last mile layer!
The developed solution works independently of last mile technology and enables broadband access over wired and wireless layers
DSLAM (the 'multiplexer„) over standard copper line
Cable TV head-ends over coax
Wireless access point over WiFi/Hyperlan
Multi-dwelling units
Community„s satellite dish installed at the aggregation point
The product is integrating backhauling features with an ad hoc developed intelligent SW layer over IP (end-to-end = from ISP CRM to end user modem) which allows the ISP to be invoiced per connected subscriber
Target group:
Small communities in rural areas (e.g. up to 250 homes) which cannot get a broadband backhaul connection to the intern, where DSL connection is cost prohibitive up to date due to insufficient customer numbers!
