BROADWATER SCHOOL

Year 10 students enjoying the Careers Fair at Merrist Wood last week

Dear Parents

This is a short term and it seems like yesterday that we were coming back from the

Easter holidays. However, it is such a crucial term for our year 11 students as they

have now started their GCSE examinations. As always, there are mixed reactions

from students as they leave the examination hall but I am pleased to be able to say

that more are smiling than not. We wish them continuing success throughout all of

their examinations.

Last week I had the privilege of being able to award the new year 10 prefects their

ties and badges. It was a very high quality field and I would like to thank all of those

who applied. The next step will be to choose the senior prefect roles in each house.

This year I shall be interviewing all prospective candidates for these important

student positions of responsibility.

Our students continue to support younger students from the local infant and junior

schools in their sports leadership roles by providing opportunities for these younger

students to get involved in and enjoy sport.

You will see in this newsletter some of the poems from one of our year 10 groups.

In addition students achieved success in gaining the 3rd prize in a National Poetry

Competition.

Finally you must all read an account from an ex-student of Broadwater School from

1967. It is interesting that some things are still the same such as the uniform rules.

However, I am pleased that girls and boys have the same access to courses in the

school regardless of their gender.

How times have changed!

Best wishes,

Chris Lee

PE & SPORTS NEWS REPORT

Wednesday 14th May saw the Annual Year 1 Multi Skills Festival take place at Broadwater. Approximately 140 Year 1 pupils from Farncombe Infants, St James, Moss Lane and Loseley Fields Junior schools took part in the festival. Pupils participated in multi skills based activities which ran on a circuit basis, ensuring all pupils had a go at lots of different sports stations. Around 30 Year 7, 8 and 9 students from Broadwater were leaders on each of the stations and showed the younger pupils what to do and helped to coach them. The Young Leaders did an amazing job and had an excellent rapport with the younger pupils. They were excellent ambassadors for the school. The year 1 pupils thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and we hope to run the event again next year.

We are currently playing in a tennis league and have started playing Inter school tennis matches. So far Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students have played schools including Tormead, George Abbot, Lingfield and the Royal School. No team wins so far but some exceptional individual performances. A special mention to Lizzie Rhodes in Year 9 who has been awesome! Rounders: We have had an excellent start to the Rounders season. So far the Year 10 team have won their district tournament, beating Woolmer Hill and Rodborough, which means they go through to the next round to play the winner of the Guildford tournament. Both the Year 9 and Year 10 teams beat Rodborough in a friendly match. The Year 7 and 8 teams both beat Woolmer Hill in a friendly match. Well done girls! Let’s hope we can have some more tournament wins over the rest of the season. At the start of this term we held a special Sports Assembly. During this we gave out sports badges to students who have represented the school in fixtures and who have been committed to sports clubs. Well done to:-

At the minute we are running an Inter Form Rounders Competition most lunch times. It is being played in a knockout format and we have had some great matches with lots of pupils involved. Broadwater Cricket Club is out on the field most lunchtimes practising. If you would like to join please see Mrs Fowler or Ben Barnett or just go along and join in the fun at lunch time. After half term we have a swim fixture; please see Miss Palmer if you would like to be involved. We also have a trip to the Kia Oval planned to watch a cricket match and to take part in cricket skills beforehand; this should be a great day out for the pupils involved. Rounders practice is most lunch times and we have lots of matches coming up, so come and join in, open to all years. The Inter house Competition is very close this year. This half term we have Inter House rounders and next half term we will have inter house tennis and cricket. Sports Day is being held on Wednesday 24th June. All students will be involved. This is during National School Sports Week, so I am sure there will be lots of sport to get involved in during the week. Students need to keep their eyes on the notice boards to ensure they get involved and don’t miss out. NEW YOUNG AMBASSADORS FOR SPORT WANTED! If you are in Year 9 and are interested in becoming one of our Sports Ambassadors please speak to Mrs Fowler. We need two keen and enthusiastic pupils to take on this role which involves promoting sport and helping out the P.E department, as well as a training day outside of school. All applicants welcome, girls and boys needed.

Also, well done to: Harvey Penton Stewart Megan Broad Poppy Campbell Scott Mackenzie who received trophies and medals for being top performers in the Inter form cricket competition which was held before Easter.

Waverley Athletics Trials: Broadwater had a very successful day at the Waverley Athletics Trials on May 12th, with 4 of our students winning first place in 5 events. The highlights are: Scott Mackenzie winning 100m 11.9 sec and 200m 24.4 sec Ollie Dunn winning Javelin 37.7m Anthony Bean winning Long jump (5.63m) and Triple Jump (11.67m) Jo Jo Fyffe 3rd in 100m 12.8 sec Tim May 2nd 400 m 58.1 sec Ollie Stemp winning 800 m in 2.28 min We wish all our athletes success at District Sports and hope that these Broadwater students are selected to represent Waverley at the County Athletics Meeting in Kingston. Well done. Athletics practice on the track and the long jump pit takes place each lunch time so all are welcome to train in preparation for the district sports and sports day.

In tennis, the KS4 team have started well with a win over Woking High but lost to Charterhouse. Tim May, Ollie Spencer, Will Kirk and George Edwards are in the second year of playing together as a team and they are already playing stronger tennis than last year. The KS3 team of Harvey Penton Stewart, Tommy Stephens, Will Sansom, Josh Gilbert and Joshua Dirks are playing well and showed promise away to Woking High but lost the important break points and the result didn’t reflect the play. Well done to all who have played and good luck in the next few matches.

All students are welcome to use the tennis courts at break and lunch but tennis practice is every Wednesday at lunchtime. Please come and play or try if you have not played before.

In cricket we have had some standout performances from across the year groups. Charlie Le Masurier, Tom Lawson, Tom Parrish, Harvey Penton Stewart and Kyle Fulker have stood out in matches with good bowling and several retiring after reaching the required number of runs. Broadwater Cricket Club are out on the cricket strip most lunchtimes practising and KS3 practice is on Monday lunchtimes and KS4 practice is on Tuesday lunchtime. All are welcome to play.

Finally, Mr Lemmer took a group of Year 10 GCSE students to a golf experience session and used it to demonstrate how technology could be used in sport to improve performance.

Mr Lemmer is leaving Broadwater at the end of this half term to develop his teaching career after a year of supporting the PE department and students in matches, practices and lessons. The PE department would like to say thanks to Mr Lemmer for all his work over the year and wish him luck in his future teaching career. Mr Stuart Cook and Mrs Kerry Fowler, PE Department

Broadwater Cricket Academy (BCA) Year 9 Games and fixtures: The year 9 team have being taking part in some cricket games for the school. The fixtures of the cricket matches that we have taken part in so far are: Woolmer Hill and Glebelands We have still got the following fixtures to take part in: Rodborough and Kings College We have only won one game so far and are trying to extend that lead. The scores were Broadwater School 67 – 60 Woolmer Hill and Glebelands 120 – 29 Broadwater school. KIA Oval Trip: We have been given the opportunity to go to the Kia Oval in London to take part in fun activities and get the chance to watch a live cricket match. This is taking place on Tuesday 2nd June. This will be a good event for people who aren’t comfortable at playing cricket to actually be involved in some fun and exciting activities. It will be a good day out as some of the BCA members have been on this trip before. All of them loved the day out and took part in all opportunities offered. Cricket Whites and Equipment:

As we are the Broadwater Cricket Academy, we have being ordering equipment for the girls and boys to play cricket at lunch time on the Cricket Strip to train for the oncoming cricket matches and hopefully become more comfortable about playing cricket. As well as ordering the equipment for the boys and girls to play cricket, we will also be ordering cricket whites. These cricket whites and the equipment that has been ordered is going to be used when there are cricket games which involve us using our own equipment.

English Department News Mrs Matthews’ Year 10 class have been working on original poetry inspired by The Mirror by Sylvia Plath.

The Engagement Ring By Crystal Beagley

Protected by apprehensive hands I have no stubborn edges Only pure beauty I create forgiving highs I am love, trust, commitment I have seen death I have felt death Yet I am eternal- Unlike my holder Here comes the white All dressed in smiles All seeing shone Not there the first But the next and the last I'm lost without her love I will wait Again

They Surround Us by David Voller They surround us, wherever we go We are aware of their amity Together they watch us grow, Emotionless they witness accounts of calamity. They surround us, showing us the world they see inside and out, missing nothing even when we wept and furled, As you though we had lost everything They surround us, speechless they watch Only when we shut them out they sleep They overlook us and witness every botch never stop staring especially when we weep They surround us, assisting us, They are open to anything we want, We take them for granted but they don't fuss, They guide us through every jaunt They surround us.

Page 11: Broadwater News May 2015

The Compass by Zoya Timonova When you are lost, you seek my help To tell you where to head, I can’t I have solutions to this maze Reveal the secret way to north To break an oath I’ll pay the price Betray my friend and make him known To save the life of helpless soul Will I become a heartless traitor? Decision must be made today Before the sunset kills the chance To carry on the way I am Or else affect the three of us. To see the outcome I cannot Our fate is still unclear to tell The weight of it will bring me down My arrow pick the winner here.

The Belt by Elaoise Benson Do not judge me. I am only what you see, The outcome swayed by your toxic mind. I am only flawed in your eyes, But you are blind to this. Do not defend yourself. I am choking from the pain, And you seem pleased. I was forged by the truth tellers, May their tried and tested rules be abided. Do not be joyful, Another notch clicked in. The pleasure is only temporary; we’ve been through this before. I am your salvation, Don’t let those nagging thoughts creep in. Do not cry. I am tired of your destructive nature, The blame does not lie with me. I am a voice of reason, Deafened by your company. Do not protest. I am the way, the truth and the life, Tainted by darkened minds. I am a humble servant of society. To be free but trapped, We are not so different, you and I. Do not forget. I am always here, Like a dog to its companion. I am understanding of the thorns that ring around your head, But never can I cut you free. Now it is done. We are united, As the last notch is clicked. We are joined at the hip, So I may feel your bones grind against my skin.

National Poetry Competition Success Broadwater Students recently took part in The Poetry Games, a national competition for students aged 11-18. The competition required students to write a poem on any subject that mattered to them. We are delighted to announce that 75 students were published in the anthology. We are also delighted to announce that as a school we came third winning £250!

Hiker’s Trust by Sean Brown Time to time useless it seems to weaken us ‘till strong we’re not. ‘Tis us who rid you of the filth and grot of the omnipresent mucky ground. Yet you enjoy the paths and streams And many notes the blackbird sings and oh so many countless things that on your journey you have found. On and on you extrude your strengths and to great lengths you now can get. On and on you urge us both we swear no oath there’s more to come yet The flautist’s rhythm, the drummer’s beat, The decrescendo of your stride, The endurance of both you and we Shall grant us all our well-earned pride.

The way is full of resting places where your friends remove our kin. Yet you care not, you wear us in Regardless of the throbbing pain. On the feet of those still kind faces Has begun an epidermis war Yet still they stand, prepared for more Their only fear the likely rain. Twists and and turns mean naught to us we make no fuss, we’re resolute. Blisters and burns tell you “go forth.” East, south or north with the mental flute. The flautist’s rhythm, the drummer’s beat, The decrescendo of your stride, The endurance of both you and we Shall grant us all our well-earned pride. Sean’s complete poem will be published on the school website: http://www.broadwater.surrey.sch.uk/English/

Broadwater School in the Sixties

I am an ex-pupil of Broadwater School, who started here in 1967. When working here recently as an exam invigilator, I was given a tour by Mr Young and it was lovely reminiscing about old times and how things have changed. Here are a few things that I can remember:

We had separate playgrounds for boys and girls. This explains why there are two, at different ends of the school.

The girls were not allowed to do woodwork, physics or chemistry. The boys were not allowed to do home economics (Food Technology) or

sewing.

When an adult entered a classroom, everyone had to stand up, until given permission by the teacher to sit down again.

There were 1000 pupils at the school. In assemblies, we all had to sit on the floor so we could all get in the hall.

We had lunch in two sittings in the dining room and had no choice of food – just a hot meal and no catering for special diets.

If a girl had to be punished, she was sent to the Deputy Headteacher, who was a woman, and was given the ruler hard across the hand. The boys were sent to the Head and either had a slipper or were caned on the bottom. (Mr Young remembers being present on one of these occasions).

Uniform Rules

Ties had to be worn at all times.

Girls were not allowed to wear trousers, make-up or jewellery.

Skirts had to be a certain length or pupils were sent home.

High heeled shoes were not allowed.

Boys had to have short hair or else they were sent home and not allowed back until it was cut.

Boys and girls had to keep their blazers on in the classroom, even in the summer, unless they were given permission to take them off.

Broadwater School PE Kit & School Wear

Further to our letter last year regarding the introduction of the new PE kit, I am pleased to confirm that parents and students have reported very favourably on both the styling/fit and overall performance. Current year 7 students are wearing the new PE kit and all other students have been ordering the kit on a ‘need to be replaced’ basis. As of September 2016, we request that wherever possible, all remaining students adopt the new style PE kit.

Uniform and PE kit can be purchased either directly on-line from Valentino’s in Knaphill or ordered via the school Reception.

Valentino’s are running a promotion from Monday 11th May until Friday 5th June 2015 whereby parents can book an appointment to have school uniform fitted and obtain 10% off of all purchases.

Valentino’s will also be running their annual 10% off Schoolwear promotion between the dates of Friday 5th and Saturday 20th June 2015. This is open without the need of a prior appointment; however you must take a printed copy of the voucher with you, which is available below or to download from the school website http://www.broadwater.surrey.sch.uk/uniform/Index.htm

Page 15: Broadwater News May 2015

Finally, Valentino’s will be in school selling uniform on the afternoon of Monday 6th July from 2.00pm till 7.00pm. If you are arriving during school hours please report to reception. If you arrive between 5.00 pm and 7.00pm please go directly to the drama entrance.

If you have any queries regarding school uniform, please do not hesitate to contact any of our Reception staff.

Year 11 Prom

We are pleased to say that our year 11 ‘Prom Night’ has become increasingly popular with parents and friends wanting to see the students arrive for their final celebration. However, this has caused a lot of congestion in the car park and on Summers Road, and we are anticipating the same this year. Well-wishers are always welcome but we would like the

evening to begin smoothly so if you are intending to come along to the school to see our students ‘suited and booted’ on Fri 26th June, please be aware that there is limited parking available.

Student Services Update New Medical Conditions Policy As part of accepted good practice and with advice from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, relevant voluntary organisations and the school’s governing bodies, our school has established a new medical conditions policy for use by all staff.

Page 16: Broadwater News May 2015

As part of this new policy, we will be asking all parents of children with a medical condition to help us by completing a school Healthcare Plan for their child/children. If you receive a Healthcare Plan please complete the plan, with the assistance of your child’s healthcare professional, and return it to the school. If medication is needed in school a form will now need to be completed and handed in, along with the medication which needs to be in its original box. Forms are available on reception, call Student Services on 01483-520642 to request one, or download one from the school website: http://www.broadwater.surrey.sch.uk/downloads/BWMedicationForm.pdf As from Monday 1st June medication cannot be administered to a student without a completed form. Water Bottle Reminder As the warmer weather approaches please ensure students have a water bottle with them at all times. Lost Property Any uncollected items in lost property will be donated to charity on Friday 5th June.

ATTENDANCE Please note below guidance that has been issued by Surrey County Council that I need to draw to your attention.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances:- 1. Pupils identified by police and education welfare officers engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.

2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more). Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2013, which becomes law on 1st September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted. In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body have to judge whether there are exceptional circumstances and may request that the Local Authority issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised. Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised. 3. The issue of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance. This will be considered if the attendance is below 85% and there are 10 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration. If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you take action without delay to secure their regular attendance. If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement, please contact the school or the Education Welfare Officer.

Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours. This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion. Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the recipient will be prosecuted in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued. Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised absences; for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty Notice. If there are two parents and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penalty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 28 days. Advice and support is available from an Education Welfare Officer by contacting your local Education Office as follows:- South East - Tel: 01737 737600
