Our Research and Experimentation Area

The research and experimentation area is the main sector of the investment for our group.

Whenever a client’s request offers the chance to explore new solutions, preliminary evaluation are

performed and, in the event that they are perceived as research opportunities, aimed at a new approach

for the enhancement of existing enterprise resources, once they are structured, they are proposed to

clients.

Once the cost assumptions are valued, the client can decide whether to share the research and the

experimentation or, otherwise, to leave room to our group to take chance by their own initiative.

The researches done during 25 years of work by the Group have led to the development of major

innovative solutions that reflect in achievements of great interest.

Among these it is worth mentioning the innovations in key areas covered by our research:

Jewelery Sector:

Treatment aimed at the recovery of copper from exhausted nitric acid solutions using potassium-based

hydroxides recovery for the use with pure fertilizer without production of scraps. (Patented system).Using

complex salts, in substitution to nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, soda for pickling, flight metals with use of

titanium reactors (3 Patents currently sold to third parties).Use of anhydrous salts to animate the reeds to

achieve lightness jewelry of considerable saving of copper, iron, aluminum (over 60%), their respective

acids or pickling solutions and as well as many non-waste products (solutions proposed over the years

1998/2003 in the three centers of excellence in the jewelery sector; Arezzo, Vicenza and Valenza and

corrently use).We also marketed in our own 52 reactors witch are currently in operation, between 2001

and 2003 with excellent references and satisfaction of our customers.

Agriculture Sector:

Study and design of thermos-assisted hydroponics, aimed at re-use of water organic waste, saving energy

and protecting the environment. Study and design of composting plant for livestock manure. Study, design

and construction of gasification for energy exploitation of agricultural waste.

Waste Recovery Sector:

Tire treatment by depolymerization process. (4 patents including 2 international coverage of the rights of

exploitation in most of the world).

Currently it is being prototyped an additional system that finalizes the energy recovery of the tires with

biomass.

The purpose of the project is to use waste and biomass locally in order to produce energy.

Our project involves the

construction of a plant for micro

cogeneration that is based on

using a technology that allows,

through a process of gasification

of raw material, the production of

syngas.

Such gas, fed in endothermic

engines connected to alternators,

produces electricity with high

performance both in terms of

energy and environment;

Additionally, the plant is also able

to produce thermal energy in

parallel (cogeneration), using the

available heat in the parts

of the engine or in the fumes it

issues.

Gasification is a thermo-chemical process by which the fuel is converted into synthesis gas (syngas) through

a partial oxidation.

The system can be designed in different sizes (from 50 to 200 kWe on the basis kWe mono-reactor or up to

1MWe with more parallel models) and for different kind of productions ( electricity only or CHP).

OUR GASIFICATION PLANT

Its particular technology allows, unlike others on the market, the use of power in the system of any type of

product with organic matrix (Wood chips, pruning residues, organic waste, etc.) mixed with wood chips with

tenors of humidity up to 50%.

After the process the syngas obtained is purified. The syngas generated feeds one or more

endothermic engines(according to the size of the plant) producing electricity; in parallel, if you

choose to operate in cogeneration, we can predict a section of heat production.

The maintenance of the parallel and the constancy of the electrical power generated is guaranteed

by the presence of a control unit of the engine of innovative conception.

There are two types of systems that differ in matrices of power supply:

- Virgin biomass plants

- Biomass and waste carbon-based plants

The gasification section is composed by:

• The power supply system: with storage area and auger that transfers biomass from storage

to reactor.

• Gasification reactor: fireplace covered with refractory material with high resistance.

• The gas purification system: with scrubbers wash, filter and a cyclone deminster.

• Section cooler and condensation: that retains water vapor and undesired products from the

syngas to be used clean in combustion engines.

BIOMASS

The European Directive 2009/28 / EC defines biomass as "the biodegradable fraction of products,

waste and Residues from biological origin agriculture (including substances vegetable and animal), forestry

and related Industries including fisheries and aquaculture, as well as the biodegradable fraction of industrial

and municipal waste."

The biomass used for energy purposes consists in all those organic materials which can be used as fuel or

processed into other substances, solid, liquid, gaseous, easier to use in conversion plants. The biomass and

fuels derived from them emit in the atmosphere, during combustion, an amount of carbon dioxide more or

less corresponding to that which is absorbed previously by the plants during their growth process.

The use of biomass for energy purposes does not cause the release of more carbon dioxide, the main cause

of the greenhouse effect. Moreover, given their nature, biodegradability is a further advantage for the

environment.

HOW WE USE BIOMASS

Our plants are designed to take advantage of these resources and through the technologies developed we

are able to solve the most common problems that arise in their use.

The technology developed allows in fact, unlike other in commerce, to use power in the system, of any type

of product of organic matrix(wood chips, pruning residues, organic waste, etc.) mixed with wood chips having

a moisture content up to 50%.

The main biomasses usable are many, with a base of wood chips a mix may contain up to 50% moisture and

a presence of fine parts up to 30%.

We list some kinds of biomass that can be used in the gasification plant.

Usually, for all these products, we need a base of wood chips; the mix can contain up to 50%

moisture and a presence of fine parts up to 30%.

OUR GASIFICATION SYSTEM

When we use vegetable biomass to produce energy in a combustion process we give back the

CO², previously captured from atmosphere, and produce ash that can be used in the topsoil,

that contains mineral salts. With our system benefits for the environment are much more. We

transform biomass into synthesis gas with a process that supports itself, almost without using

conventional fuels and we use gas to produce electricity, heating and cooling.

What do we get from the process? Charcoal in huge quantities, that can be suitable to be

incorporated into the soil as a soil improver, increasing its characteristics of permeability,

porosity, aeration and ability to retain humidity.

an agricoltural point of view;.«Until a

century ago - says Franco Miglietta, a

farmland contained 130 tons of carbon per

hectare, today almost half.

Our gasification plant, with its innovative technology, is able to produce charcoal that can be used inside the agro-industrial

chain.

BIOCHAR; THE ADDITIONAL RESOURCE OF OUR GASIFICATION PLANT

Adding 700 kilos of biochar per annum, you may increase their fertility and store there for

centuries the carbon dioxide, that plants have taken from atmosphere in order to grow.

If, by assumption, this solution is adopted by the entire Italian agriculture, the country would take

away 45 million tonnes of CO² per year from atmosphere. For this reason more researches are

focused on finding an economically and viable systems to capture and "kidnapping" the carbon

dioxide, underground, produced by industry, to reduce greenhouse emissions into the

atmosphere; CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage). In Italy there is a legislative decree, some

patents, but no operational site yet. In other cases they have been used molecular sieves to

capture the CO² that will be placed in the ground.

Greenpeace, the worldwide environmental organization, said that the CCS is not a solution for

energetic and climate problem; for several reasons. Meanwhile, at best, that technology is not

expected to be available on an industrial scale before 2030.

In addition, CCS plants consume a lot of energy in turn, reducing efficiency of the plants to

which they apply, and they have really high costs.

As a viable alternative, the CNR and Greenpeace researchers support renewable energy

sources, toward which the environmental organization proposes the investments diversion.

Otherwise our system, in addition of producing energy, supporting itself with a positive balance

of energy and obtaining emission levels close to 0, allows to “kidnap” carbon dioxide from

atmosphere and fixed in form of organic carbon in soil.

As a practical example about the environmental benefits of our plant, we can say that we

produce 4 MW of total energy with 1 ton of biomass (electricity, heating and cooling).

This production, compared to a traditional plant, avoided more than 400 kg. of CO² with 1 ton of

biomass.

We also fix into the ground, through biochar, 400 kg. of CO² per ton, that plants had absorbed

from the atmosphere. (Source I-Char).

This is the answer to the past two decades of researches that

combines so many expectations;

- Energy production from renewable sources (biomass)

- Reset of using fossil fuels

- Increase of the organic substance in soil and therefore of its

fertility

BENEFITS AND MANY USES OF CHARCOAL

Different studies have demonstrated significant

agronomic benefits, such as increased crops

production, inside soils improved with biochar. Its

application helps to improve the fertility of the soil

and to increase water and essential nutrients

retention for the plants, in particular calcium,

potassium and phosphorus.

Thanks to its porous structure and a high surface

area, Biochar influences the physical properties of

the soil, for example by helping water retention and

by increasing the surface area.

Another positive effect is the increase in the pH of the soil, caused by the presence of basic

substances in the char. This is particularly useful in acid soils, in which the increase of pH leads to

an increase of the solubility of important elements for plants, such as phosphorus, calcium and

potassium.

Also, after placing in the ground, the surface of the char undergoes oxidation with the formation of

carboxylic and phenolic functional groups, that confer negative charges pH dependent to the

surface.

This produces the improvement of the chemical characteristics of the soil, such as an increase of

the cationic exchange capacity (CEC) and of water retention, nutrient and agrochemical products,

available to plants and crops. The CSC is, in fact, indicative to the ability of the soil to retain

cations in an available form for plants and to minimize losses due to leaching.

The use of biochar as a soil improver therefore leads to a reduction of the leaching of important

nutrients with the consequent increase of the soil fertility and, at the same time, it reduces the

pollution of aquifers. All this also allows less use of chemical fertilizers with important

consequences both for farmers, subjected to lower costs, and for the environment. In fact, a lower

consumption of energy and resources also leads to a lower environmental impact.

But there is more. In fact, thanks to its high absorbents capacity, biochar can contribute to the

reduction of diffuse pollution derived from agriculture through its distribution in soils of polluting

elements.

It may also be possible to use its absorbent capacity to eliminate contamination in the process of

water treatment.

Several studies demonstrate its effectiveness in the removal of nitrates, phosphates, heavy

metals, pesticides and organic compounds both from soils and from aqueous solutions.

Our cogeneration plant can produce electricity, heating and cooling and it is a good and a cheap

solution for all those productive units that need, within their structures, these energy sources.

Its possible animal fats or vegetable oils feeding allows to produce cheaper energy than using

fossil fuels.

Moreover, our system is the perfect solution that can make a productive unit completely

independent in terms of energy.

With our plant you can feed horticulture and floriculture greenhouses and refrigerating rooms for

food storage.
