I grew up in a marginal Jewish home. Believe it or not, we had a Christmas tree when I was 5 years old, and the first Passover Seder to take place in our home in Syracuse was one I conducted when I was a college student. I became the observant Conservative Jew I am today over a period of time, not beginning until my Bar Mitzvah. Therefore, it’s a long and winding road from there to here, and many twists in that road brought me to where I am today. They include among other things USY and Camp Ramah and changes I began making in my own pattern of Jewish living and observance. There was some dispute in the family about when I decided to become a rabbi, but little disagreement among family members who were not all that excited about the prospect. You will hear about that, including why I became a rabbi, and much more which is all part of history now- a journey that I look forward to sharing- with all of the twists and turns. HIGH HOLIDAY HONORSAs our synagogue has grown much larger, it has become more challenging and

important to be inclusive and personal. We realize that some families have been membersfor many years and have never had a High Holiday honor. In this spirit, we would like toinvite any adult member of Congregation Beth Shalom who has never received a HighHoliday honor to let us know if you would like one. Don’t worry if you can’t readHebrew, it will be a non-speaking honor.

We realize that the size of the response will determine when your turn will come. Weshall begin with those who have been members the longest. Please remember that honorswill also continue to be given to those who serve the congregation in various capacities. Therefore, we ask your patience. In time your opportunity to come to the Bima will come.We look forward to the day when we can say that all who wish to be honored have beenhonored.

We look forward to hearing from you. Please fill out the attached form and return it tothe synagogue, or e-mail it back to the attention of the High Holiday Committee byAugust 2nd.

If you would like to blow the Shofar on the High Holidays or learn to blow the Shofar, please contact Cantor Stoehr at [email protected] by August 2nd.

Sincerely,

Carl Wolkin, Senior RabbiLily Zoberman, President

TISHA B’AVTisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av, is a day

that commemorates a number of different calamities in Jewishhistory. Among these sad events is the destruction of both Templesin Jerusalem, the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E., thesecond by the Romans in 70 C.E. According to tradition, bothevents took place on the Ninth of Av. In addition, the Expulsion ofthe Jews from Spain occurred on this date.

The day is observed as a fast. Also, the Book of Lamentations(Eicha) is chanted in a mournful tune. This book, one of theMegillot, is a description of the tragic events surrounding the ruinof the First Temple. Tradition ascribes its authorship to the prophetJeremiah. Tisha B’Av is the only day when Tefillin are not worn atthe morning service. This is connected with the fact that in themorning the sadness of the day is too much with us to wear theTallit and Tefillin, symbols of joy. All in all, Tisha B’Av is a sadday of national mourning by Jewish people; we must activelyrecollect the past to insure the future.

In addition to the reading of Lamentations on Monday evening,July 19, the service will be enhanced with dramatic and poeticreadings, describing different periods of persecution from ancienttimes until today. Tuesday morning’s service will also include aselection from the Book of Eicha.
