BT: a sustainable ICT-provider

This world is our greatest riches and it must be handled with the greatest care. That’s why BT, besides being an ICT provider, is also a major practitioner of implementing sustainability strategies. We are committed to reducing the carbon intensity of our global business by 80 per cent by 2020. So far we have achieved 43 per cent reduction by becoming more energy efficient and by increasing our use of renewable energy.

SOS Children’s Villages

BT has been connecting companies all over the world for more than 30 years. Last year, we started with connecting communities in Africa as well. The ‘Connecting Africa’ project provides broadband Internet to more than 700.000 people. Children living in Children’s Villages now have access to extra education tools, e-learning courses and mentoring programmes developed by the charity.

Besides that, we’re using our skills and technology to raise money for good causes. For example, our unique Emergency Response Team responded to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines to help restore communications.

The 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games

Setting up a telecommunications network for the Olympic Games is a monumental undertaking. BT Global Services rose to the challenge with aplomb, running a seven-year marathon with many hurdles along the way. The result? London 2012 was the most connected Olympic and Paralympic games of all time, with tried and tested technology and incredibly extensive testing alleviating any possible risks.

More than 5.500 kilometres of optical fibre, 11.500 fixed telephones, 500.000 hotspots and 961 terabytes of information set the bar sky high for future iterations of the iconic sporting event.

NATO Summit Wales 2014, Celtic Manor

The 2014 NATO Summit in Wales was attended by 60 world leaders. Providing impeccable communications via a complex service mix including 350 telephone lines, 65 ISDN channels and foolproof security was a huge challenge. Not only did we succeed in that challenge, we assembled a secure core infrastructure in just six weeks time.

For the managers of the Royal Philips Electronics, staying in touch is both a daily affair and a logistical nightmare. With BT’s help, the Philips executive committee in the Netherlands set up a video-enabled boardroom.
