Hutchies’ Building Services and ESD team will manage the model coordination and design development process, taking into account the information demands placed on the model throughout design, construction, and the entire life cycle of the building. We start with the end in mind, ensuring the model is set up well from the beginning to be able to meet those demands.

This ability to import and export information between software packages is one of the key benefits of BIM as it avoids the unnecessary duplication of work and reduces the risk of errors and inaccuracies. There should ideally be a seamless flow of information from architect to the model to building analysis tools, to be used for activities such as scheduling, quantity takeoffs, costing, structural analysis and building energy analysis.

Hutchinson Builders achieves superior project outcomes through the use of BIM tools such as Revit, Solibri and Navisworks. This technology enables the virtual design and coordination of buildings before any work is done on site. It creates a visualisation and analysis of complex 3D geometry including time lapse videos showing the sequence of construction.

Hutchies has embraced these technologies for their ability to reduce errors, minimise re-work, diminish waste, and reduce conflicts and changes during construction. Our use of BIM results in lowering project costs, optimising schedule and improving service coordination, clash detection, and offsite fabrication.

We have maximised the benefits of BIM in the delivery of key projects like the Queensland Emergency Operations Centre, Maroochydore State Government Office Building, Ergon Energy head office in Townsville, Fairfield Shopping Centre, Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology’s laboratory, Skytower, and Global Switch Data Centre.

Our ESD team was formed specifically to provide industry with practical and innovative ESD solutions. Driven by strong technical capability, we take a pragmatic, cost effective approach to achieving ESD ratings, while optimising building performance.

Hutchies’ ESD team includes mechanical, electrical, integration, commissioning, and building management system specialists to ensure the successful delivery of targeted environmental ratings such as Green Star, LEED, EarthCheck and Enviro Development, as well as operational performance ratings such as NABERS.

Hutchinson Builders understand the importance of not only delivering a project from concept stage through to completion of construction but now ensuring that optimal energy performance can be maintained throughout the life-cycle of that building. Developing the ESD Team experience has enabled us to effectively understand and manage the unique ESD challenges and opportunities that all projects present.

Commissioning is a fundamental element of construction. It is a systematic process of ensuring that building systems perform according to design intent, code and legislative requirements, as well as the owner’s operational needs. Hutchies’ commissioning methodology makes sure all equipment and systems are designed, installed and commissioned according to manufacturers’ recommendations. We also apply best practice industry standards, and our own rigorous quality processes, including CIBSE Commissioning Codes and ASHREA Commissioning Guidelines.

The best commissioning processes are conducted as a cyclic program, occurring throughout construction, factory acceptance, site acceptance, integration testing, and warranty phases of a project. Experience has taught us that optimal commissioning outcomes are achieved when the process is collaborative. We’ve learned that success relies heavily on continued teamwork between Hutchies’ commissioning team, our subcontractors, consulting base, and the client.

We’ll get the team and systems right, and then work collaboratively to manage the process and keep it on track. We’ll ensure submissions and responses are timely and thorough, minimising lost time and decreased momentum.

Hutchies’ in-house Building Services and Commissioning Team gets involved from early in the design phase — and sometimes even earlier. We play an integral role in equipment selections and procurement, and stay involved throughout construction, and the pre and final commissioning and witness testing phases. We provide a staged handover, comprehensive client training, and meticulous building tuning.

Due to the varied and complex systems within each project, our team generates a comprehensive commissioning plan and program in collaboration with subcontractors, the project ICA, construction team, services consultants, and key client stakeholders. The plan and program are regularly reviewed as the project progresses to ensure any design changes are accommodated.

Developed over the course of delivering numerous complex and challenging projects, our commissioning documentation includes tailored quality plans, programs, and commissionable systems that define the operational intent and all PPR deliverables. We take a continuous improvement approach to our documentation which is constantly evolving to meet the demands of an ever-changing construction landscape.
