ST. PAUL’S EPISTLE Vol.XVIII ed.12

St. Paul’s Parish Mission Statement: to be a thriving, loving, Christ-centered parish; a parish who knows Christ and makes Christ known.

We take seriously our Baptismal Covenant that says we will respect the dignity of every human being.

You are welcome to worship with us, to join with us in fellowship, and in our ministries, regardless of age, economic status, marital status, nationality, race, sexual orientation or gender identity, ability or disability, and wherever you are in your spiritual journey.

the dignity of every human being.

DECEMBER 2019

2019 2019

A Word from Mother Liz

Advent is upon us and we have not even

finished the Thanksgiving leftovers although the

outside world has moved on. Stores open on

Thanksgiving, Black Friday, secular songs piped in

from every conceivable direction, it can be

overwhelming especially if we slow down and try to

observe a bit of the season of Advent.

Advent can begin as early as November 27

and as late as December 3rd

. We know that when it

is late and December 1st is on the later side the

countdown to Christmas seems rushed. Advent is a

time of preparation, of preparing not only for the

arrival of the Christ Child but also the sign that

God’s kingdom has broken through, a kingdom that

will not be fully realized until Christ comes again.

We all know about the preparations for

Christmas, the Christmas lists, the shopping, the

crows, the deliveries from Amazon all marking the

time till the festivities suddenly come to a halt about

6:00 pm on Christmas day which is when most of

the radio stations stop playing Christmas music. I

am not a member of the Advent police and will

confess that I have already set up my Christmas

trees. The decorations will take longer but there is

much joy in anticipation.

Nevertheless as Christians we have a chance

to experience that time differently, to savor the

darkness, to prepare for the coming of our king. I

encourage you to mark this time by making an

Advent wreath to mark the weeks or using an

Advent calendar to mark the days, and perhaps

reading Forward Day-by-Day to let scripture and

reflection draw you more deeply into the great

mystery that is coming.

Vestry Highlights

Patchogue Village Code Enforcement has been

called several times to check St.Paul’s property and

remove any homeless people sleeping on the

porches.

Pledges are coming in, hoping for many more to

establish the budget soon.

New cross for the younger acolytes is now being

used and is very attractive.

Nominating committee established for new vestry

members needed to replace retiring members. If you

2

would like to serve St.Paul’s please speak to Conni

Still, Scott Harris or Martin Minogue.

Building and Grounds oversaw repairs to electrical,

plumbing and construction work in kitchen,

bathroom and back of church.

Adopt-A-Family for a seven member family will

provide clothing and gifts from vestry and cash

donations from congregation. Deadline 12/13/19

STEWARDSHIP

Participating in our community of faith

through giving

I have been thinking all month about writing this

column for my turn for the newsletter. I usually have

a plan, I write the stewardship column, then I

organize the rest of the newsletter and put it together

to send to Mo Liz for her “Words” to send to you

all. But for some reason, time crunch made me do

the newsletter work part first and I am so glad I did.

I don’t have to tell you all about St. Paul’s

participation in our community of faith through

giving! Just read the rest of the articles. Because of

our FAITH in our Lord, we have had the strength

and love and care to give in everything we do here.

We bought a new, lighter weight cross so the young

acolytes can carry it to lead the procession with

great pride.

We are bringing in our Pledges of our treasure to

keep this church that we love with a balanced

budget.

We are giving our time and talent in working and

cleaning and making coffee and planting.

We are donating food to the food pantry, clothes and

books and linens and warm sweaters to the thrift

shop for them to sell and sometimes give to

someone who needs a blanket or a warm jacket.

We had a parishioner who moved away who gave us

a beautiful Grandmother’s clock that we hope to

raise money that will go towards a good cause that

Mo Liz will decide.

Our Faith in our Lord is wonderful, it makes us want

to Give to our community and to Him! Amen.

Conni Still, Laura Cooley, Scott Harris, Martin

Minogue, Conni Still, Phyllis Voegeli

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

Continued work all around the parish. New clocks in

the meeting rooms, plungers in all of the bathrooms.

Bulbs planted in the gardens for Spring surprises!

Trimming and cleaning, a dedicated crew.

Raise the Roof

Thanks to all who have contributed to this and

who continue to do so; we’ll have updates for

you in a couple of months. It’s not too late to

3

begin to pledge, the work is ongoing, see the office

for a pledge card.

Thanks and Acknowledgments

Everyone who contributed towards the

Thanksgiving Baskets, particularly those who

handled the pick up and delivery of the turkeys, and

the storage and sorting of the donations, and the

organization of the food baskets themselves. Great

work!

Tracy Classon and others who helped to drive

Emeka to and from church when he was unabe to do

so on his own.

Prayer for the Parish

Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in

heaven and earth, hear our prayers for this parish

family. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless,

and restore the penitent. Grant us all things

necessary for our common life and bring us all to be

of one heart and mind within your holy Church;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thrift Shop Doings

We have observed that the foot traffic has gradually

increased over the past couple of months from an

average of 20 to 25 people per day to an average of

25 to 30 people per day. However, while it may, it

doesn’t always translate to an increase in revenue.

Jeannine Cranor and Conni Still

Volunteers are needed to host the coffee

hours after the 8 and 10 o’clock services. Sharon

Minogue will give you all the instruction on how to make

delicious coffee and where all the equipment is kept,

Food Pantry

During the month of October we fed 275 families at

our Thursday morning Food Pantry. The basket in

the Narthex accepts your Sunday morning donations

and carloads of food are donated from Long Island

Harvest and Long Island Cares and many other

generous donors. Our volunteers arrive early on

4

Thursday morning and the folks line up waiting for

the doors to open at 10:30.

The swing storage space was overflowing with the

trimmings waiting to be matched with turkeys. On

Tuesday, November 26, more than 80 turkeys were

distributed and the few that were left over were

donated to the Eastern Farm Workers.

St. Clare’s Guild

Due to lack of participation and cold weather

coming we have decided to put St. Clare’s Guild on

hiatus until further notice.
