BULLDOG
NEWSLETTER A publication of the Edmond Memorial High School Parent Organization
December 2017 Edition
Dear Bulldog Families, It is hard to believe we are already in the month of December and the first semester is coming to an end. Our teachers and staff are hard at work making sure your students are successful as we reach the final stretch of the semester. We ask your help in keeping our Bulldogs focused in making sure projects, assignments, and finals are taken seriously. Final exams are scheduled for December 19th and 20th. (Exam dates and times are posted on page 5 of the newsletter.) We want all of our Bulldogs to be successful and focused. Though Winter Break is close, students have several opportunities for learning while preparing for first semester assessments before grades are final and posted. On a personal note, I would like to thank our Edmond Memorial families and community for the support you have given to the school. Overwhelming support is evident through our community partnerships, booster clubs, parent groups and the Memorial Parent Organization. The Edmond Memorial Bulldog tradition of support each year is one of the many reasons Edmond Memorial remains outstanding! Despite funding issues in our state, Edmond Memorial continues to provide our students with excellent learning and extracurricular opportunities due to the tremendous support you give. We especially would like to thank you for your generous nature in providing the MPO with over $14,000 to devote toward teacher and staff grants. These funds are already being put to use in making an impact on learning for your students in the classroom. What we do here at Edmond Memorial High School is a team effort. Your support is invaluable as we strive to provide your child with the best learning opportunities possible. Before Winter Break, we would like to invite each of you to come and experience some of the exciting extracurricular activities Edmond Memorial has to offer. Our Bulldog Athletes are already hard at work for the winter sport season with wrestling, swimming, and basketball in full swing. We also have opportunities to hear our fantastic band, orchestra, and vocal music groups perform at their winter concerts this month. Please see the calendar on our website to support your Edmond Memorial Bulldogs family. Finally, we would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays and a great New Year. Enjoy your family time and we look forward to working together again next semester. Sincerely, Anthony Rose Principal, Edmond Memorial High School

A letter from your Senior Class President, Nawal Saya:
My name is Nawal Saya and I am the Senior Class president at Edmond Memorial High School. I am asking
for donations to help our school with Emergency Go Bags. The purpose of these bags is to provide teachers the tools
to aid students in case of unexpected, natural disasters. Tools would include: flashlights, batteries, gloves, helmets,
first aid kits and the bags themselves. The idea for these necessities was sparked by a discussion with a counselor
from Moore, Oklahoma affected by the deadly tornado that took the lives of Plaza Elementary students. After a tabletop
exercise with Memorial teachers in September, they discovered that, regardless of never really being prepared for a
catastrophic event, Emergency Go Bags would help in the preparedness and in the response. I personally do not
want Memorial teachers to be caught in a similar situation and if they are, these Emergency Go Bags will assist them.
I am writing to ask for support in helping the Class of 2018 leave a legacy in forming the Emergency Go Bags.
These items will go straight to where the bags will be assembled and then given to each teacher for his/her classroom.
If you can provide any sort of donation, either funding or items, any help would be greatly appreciated. We plan to
deliver these to the school by January 16.
Thank you in advance for your contribution.
Sincerely,
Nawal Saya

The Best of the Big Apple
By: SAMANTHA THOMPSON
Edmond Memorial DECA Reporter
For 23 years, the seniors of the Memorial High School DECA Chapter have gone to New York on a trip to
further their knowledge of successful businesses in the real world. This trip took place throughout November 15 - 19.
With a limited few days in the ‘Big Apple,’ the chapter advisor, Kim Walters, planned every minute of the trip, letting the
students see and experience the most in the city.
This excursion provided a once in a lifetime opportunity to see how big businesses and companies are run
effectively. The seniors were able to go on a behind the scenes tours of NBC Studios, where they not only toured the
sets but also inadvertently ran into rapper Eminem. Some of the student visited Madison Square Garden, where they
were privately taken into the Knicks locker room.
“The NBC tour was my favorite part of the whole trip,” senior Nawal Saya said. “It was such a cool experience
to go behind the scenes at the studios and learn about the history and see how much NBC has grown through
the years.”
To further their knowledge in the media and its role in marketing, the students explored the Paley Center for
Media where they took time analyzing the most popular ads and logos throughout the years. After this, they were able
to go on a walking tour through the Lower East Side, where they studied the financial district.
“We were able to visit so many places that really help my students to see marketing tactics and big
businesses,” advisor Walters said. “Each year I look forward to this trip because students come back with such
a plethora of knowledge and new ideas.”
This trip, while educational, was not only remarkable because of what the Memorial students learned. The
bonding experiences and unforgettable memories made a lasting impression on each student. These most memorable
moments included, ice skating in Rockefeller Center, eating delicious food from many popular restaurants in New York
and the trip to the famous observation deck, Top of the Rock.
“I loved ice skating with everyone at Rockefeller,” senior Anna Babcock said. “We were constantly with each
other and because of this, we were always laughing and making memories.”
In their last year of DECA, the seniors were able to make new memories in New York. This trip will be
something the class of 2018 DECA members can look back on and remember.

2017-18 Teacher of the Year

Congratulations Mrs. Walters!
This is a well-deserved honor.

The Bulldog Band ended the marching season
strong with a 7th place finish at OBA. They have
now switched gears and are knee-deep into
concert season! There are three full ensembles
honing skills and learning new music for their first
concert of the year. Their first performance will be
at 7:00 pm, Thursday, December 14th in the
EMHS auditorium, followed by cookies and
hot cocoa. Don’t miss it!
Take Note, the new all-women show choir,
performing at the Winter Concert.
The EMHS Choirs held their Winter Concert on December 5 and the beautiful music that flowed out of the auditorium
was both moving and joyful. All groups from the Vocal Music Department performed holiday songs to get the audience
in the spirit of the season. The night started off with the song and dance of the new all-women show choir, Take Note,
and ended with the combined choirs (JV Women, Varsity Women and Varsity Men) performing a very moving rendition
of "Silent Night" by signing the entire song with music, then silently with only sign language, and then with music,
signing and the entire audience. It was amazing! The night also included Act II, the long-standing show choir, as well
as solos and ensembles that performed in between set changes. It was truly an amazing evening of music.
Speaking of amazing, Edmond Memorial had 34 vocal students make the 2017-2018 OKMEA All State Chorus.
Congratulations to each of these students! EMHS is well known for performing arts and you can see why - we are
so proud of our students for their hard work and talent!

Have you ever looked up the definition of “THANK YOU"? Thank you means to "express gratitude, appreciation, or acknowledgment to and it also means a grateful feeling or acknowledgment of a benefit, favor, or the like, expressed by words or otherwise". So, when we say THANK YOU for donating to our iCARE Matching Challenge, it is more than just words to us - it is honestly difficult to fully express our gratitude! We had an original goal of $8,000 for this matching challenge - modest, but enough to meet our budget and double the $5,000 Teacher Grants budgeted amount. Because of your generosity, we raised $14,814.30 - Far exceeding our expectations! Your generosity allowed us to give every penny of that back to the school in the form of Teacher and Staff Grants. It is very exciting to be part of a school that supports its teachers and staff - We love our Bulldog Community! The MPO also provided pies to every faculty member at EMHS on November 21st - thanks to our Bulldog Families stepping up and donating pies. Happy faces abounded that day and once again, we thank you for lifting morale and bringing joy to our school. We will be doing a Christmas Staff Appreciation before school lets out for Winter Break - stay tuned!
The next MPO meeting is January 11 @ 12:30 p.m. - we don't meet in December. We invite you to join us! We sincerely hope that your holiday season is full of warmth, laughter, friends and family and we encourage you to reach out and touch another family who may be in need this season. Your generosity will allow their cups to overflow with holiday blessings.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
