United States Blocks Honduras in NORCECA Opener Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA (Aug. 27, 2012) – The United States opened its title defense of the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-16 victory over Honduras Monday evening at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Gregory Petty paced the United States with 13 points including four aces, while Matthew Tarantino added nine points in just two sets of play. Seven Americans tallied a block, while seven different players scored at least one ace and 11 of the 12 Americans scored at least one point. Jose Vasquez led Honduras with five points and Alex Padilla added three points. Honduras had eight different players reach the scoring column.

Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada and United States Open Pool Play with Victories Match 1: Puerto Rico Trims Spirited Curacao in Opener Puerto Rico started the 2012 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship with a 27-25, 25-13, 25-23 victory over a spirited Curacao on Monday afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Puerto Rico captain Cristian Rivera paced his squad with 12 points, while Giovanni Llinas chipped in 10 points. Pedro Fernandez added nine points. Luis Beltran tallied 16 of his team’s 40 digs. Curacao received balanced scoring with Quinten Anthony scoring 11 points and Derrick Alexandre adding nine points. Puerto Rico saved two set points in the opening set to win 27-25. Puerto Rico gained steam midway through the second set to claim a 25-13 victory to go up 2-0. Curacao rallied from a four-point deficit in the third set to take a 17-16 advantage, but Puerto Rico bounced back with five unanswered points for a 21-17 lead. Puerto Rico held on for a 25-23 victory after Curacao closed to 23-22. Puerto Rico held slim advantages of 37-25 in attack points, 12-9 in blocks and 2-0 in aces, but took advantage of 26 Curacao errors to its own 17 errors. Match 2: Mexico Aces St. Vincent and the Grenadines Mexico won its opening 2012 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship match with a 25-7, 25-10, 25-15 victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Mexico, with nine different players scoring, was led by Marco Rodriguez’s 10 points, while Jesus Perales chipped in nine points. Irving Gonzalez tallied five aces in the match for Mexico in a non-starting role. St. Vincent and the Grenadines was paced by Ijahlon Butler’s eight points. Mexico reached the second technical timeout of the opening set leading 16-5 and cruised to the 25-7 victory. Mexico controlled the entire second set with a 25-10 victory ending with consecutive aces. St. Vincent and the Grenadines pulled to within two at 10-8 in the third set, but Mexico erupted for a 6-1 run en route to a 25-15 victory. Mexico’s service kept St. Vincent and the Grenadines out of system with a 11-2 ace advantage, while also producing a 6-4 block advantage. Mexico limited its errors to 15 and benefited from 18 St. Vincent and the Grenadines errors. Match 3: Canada Powers Past Guatemala Canada used a 17-3 block advantage to defeat Guatemala 25-15, 25-13, 25-21 in its opening 2012 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship match on Monday afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Canada was sparked offensively by Dany Demyanenko’s 17 points in the victory. Alexander William Russell added 12 points, which included four blocks and four aces. Gerardo Antonio Gonzalez Pas led Guatemala with nine points, while Erick Noel Colindres Ipina tallied eight points. With the score tight in the opening set, Canada dominated the end for a 25-15 victory. Canada continued the pressure in the second set without allowing Guatemala to come close in a 25-13 victory. Guatemala scored the first two points of the third set and led 9-7, but Canada propelled to a 25-21 victory with the final five points. Aside from a dominating block, Canada produced a 7-0 margin in aces to offset 21 miscues to Guatemala’s 18. Match 4: United States Blocks Honduras in NORCECA Opener The United States opened its title defense of the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-16 victory over Honduras Monday evening at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Gregory Petty paced the United States with 13 points including four aces, while Matthew Tarantino and James Shaw added eight points in just two sets of play. Seven Americans tallied a block, while seven different players scored at least one ace and 11 of the 12 Americans scored at least one point. Jose Vasquez led Honduras with five points and Alex Padilla added three points. Honduras had eight different players reach the scoring column. The United States built an early 10-2 lead in the opening set and pushed to a 25-12 victory as the Americans tallied five blocks and four aces. In the second set, USA raced to an 8-1 advantage at the first technical timeout and cruised to a 25-12 victory. Honduras scored the first two points of the third set, only to have the U.S. rattled off four straight points for a 5-3 lead sparking the Americans to a 25-16 victory. The United States produced an 13-0 service ace margin and out-blocked Honduras 11-5. Honduras limited its errors to 12 for the match, compared to 22 of the USA.
