Lenten Prayer We are a people called to rise from the ashes to new life, the life of God. Therefore, during this sacred season, let us wait and work and pray: Let us rise from the ashes of complaining to center our lives on gratitude. Let us rise from pessimism - to become a people of hope. May we leave harsh judgments in the ashes - and focus on kindly thoughts. May we relinquish worry - to trust in God. We ask also to be taught how to give up discouragement — to be full of hope. And how to give up bitterness - by turning instead to forgiveness. May transformed hearts arise from the ashes, so that we may give up hatred — to return good for evil. And surrender our negativity — in order to become positive. Let us give up anger, and become more patient, and give up pettiness, and become more mature. During these forty days, let us leave in the ashes, gloom to enjoy the beauty that is all around us and may we reject jealousy, as we pray for trust. Let us leave gossiping in the ashes, as we strive to learn self-control. May we surrender our sin, to become converted to virtue. Most of all, during this Lenten season, we seek God’s help to give up giving up, knowing that new life is always within our reach.

BRUCE GREY CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD – VISION STATEMENT

Committed to a vibrant Catholic education, we ensure quality learning experiences through community partnerships that nurture each student in mind, body and spirit and embrace the

teachings of Christ, giving witness to Gospel values.

Lenten Prayer We are a people called to rise from the ashes to new life, the life of God. Therefore, during this sacred season, let us wait and work and pray: Let us rise from the ashes of complaining to

center our lives on gratitude. Let us rise from pessimism - to become a people

of hope. May we leave harsh judgments in the ashes - and

focus on kindly thoughts. May we relinquish worry - to trust in God. We ask also to be taught how to give up

discouragement — to be full of hope. And how to give up bitterness - by turning instead

to forgiveness. May transformed hearts arise from the ashes, so that we may give up hatred — to return good for evil. And surrender our negativity — in order to

become positive. Let us give up anger, and become more patient, and give up pettiness, and become more mature. During these forty days, let us leave in the ashes,

gloom to enjoy the beauty that is all around us and may we reject jealousy, as we pray for trust.

Let us leave gossiping in the ashes, as we strive to learn self-control. May we surrender our sin,

to become converted to virtue. Most of all, during this Lenten season, we

seek God’s help to give up giving up, knowing that new life is always within our reach.

School Council Meeting March 22nd, 7:00PM

Saint of the Month

St Patrick

(March 17th)

St. Patrick, who was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave when he was a boy, later escaped and became a priest, then a bishop. Filled with compassion for the people of Ireland because they did not know God, Patrick went back to those who had once been his captors, to bring them the faith. Although he suffered very much at their hands, Patrick continued to love and reach out to them, asking God to forgive them for their harmful words and actions.

“Blessed Elisabetta Canori, pray for us,

that our difficulties will not lead us to

selfishness, but to empathy

which seeks to listen, understand,

and bring peace to everyone.”

Amen

March Virtue Compassion

Empathy is being able to identify with, and feel the concerns, feelings and needs of another person. A person of empathy is able to listen sensitively, under-stand and lovingly “be with” another person. Empa-thy is at the heart of the ministry of Jesus who first sought to love and understand the people he later healed, and empathy is also at the heart of disciple-ship.

“The heart is happiest when it beats for others”

You can reinforce the virtue of Empathy by using our Catholic Culture of Deep Caring Calendar

Week One

•I believe that God listens lovingly to me.

Week Two

•Like Jesus, I notice when someone is hurt and needs a friend.

Week Three

•I listen with my ears and my heart to under-stand and encourage others.

Week Four

•I learn about the needs in our world and commit myself to helping all who are

suffering.

ICS Chess Teams An amazing congratulations goes out to the ICS

chess teams! They represented our school with good manners and great sportsmanship. Our senior

team came home with silver and the juniors and intermediates with GOLD!

Legislative Page Program Are you a high-achieving grade 7 or 8 student? Would you enjoy participating in an educational program at the Provincial Parliament in Toronto? Do you like to work hard and meet people your age from all over Ontario? If you answered yes to the above questions, the Legislative Page Program may be for you! Alli Meyer, a grade 8 student at ICS, applied for the leg-islative page program and was accepted. To apply she wrote an essay on why she would make a good candidate for the page program. Determination, outgoing, responsi-ble and committed are the qualities that Alli has that made her a great page candidate. Alli is able to speak both French and English and was able to communicate with other pages or Members of Parliament. As a page, Alli had to memorize the seating plan for all the MPP’s, know their names, faces and riding. Alli spent 3 weeks at the legislature. There were many other activities planned for the pages such as skating at Nathan Phillips and go-ing to the ROM. Alli’s biggest fear was giving messages to the wrong person. Alli had lots of fun and recom-mends her friends to apply. Pictured with Alli is the Ser-geant-at-Arms, Dennis Clark, on the day that Alli was Page Captain.

Congratulations Alli! Well Done!

On Wednesday February 1st, the Immaculate Conception Senior boys volley-ball team travelled to Sacred Heart high school to compete in the board compe-tition. The boys started out the tournament by winning two sets to none against: Walkerton, Hanover, Kincardine and Owen Sound. This put the boys in first place after round robin play. For the semi-finals we played against a very com-petitive team from Durham. Durham jumped out quickly in the first set taking a 15-5 lead. Despite this, the boys battled back with some great serving to take the first set 25-22. They carried the momentum over to the second set winning easily. In the finals it was a rematch against Notre Dame from Owen Sound. The boys played very well, making great serves, digs, sets and hits. ICS won two very close sets with Collin Zettler putting the exclamation point on the tour-nament by smashing down a great spike on championship point. Congratula-tions to the boys on playing so well throughout the day and being the board Senior boys volleyball champs! Team members were: Ryan Bester, Collin Zet-tler, Wes Diemert, Brennan Wagner, Justin Donelley, Lucas Slosser, Michael Dirven, Patrick McArthur, Keaton Rich and Blake Wideman.
