April 26, 2015

Fourth Sunday of Easter

John 10:11-18 Jesus himself gave us the image of

himself as the Good Shepherd. In

trying to teach us about who he was,

his love for us, and his mission to

save us, he chose to speak in these

terms. The picture is a comforting

one. The shepherd makes sure the

sheep are fed, watered, rested, and, of

course, safe. This last element is what

separates a good shepherd from a bad

one. When a threat approaches his

flock, the good shepherd will do

whatever is necessary to save them,

even at risk of his own safety.

It's important, in understanding the

analogy, for us to realize that we, the

sheep of Christ's pasture, do face real

threats, though they may be the kind

that are hard to recognize. The

wolves that prowl around our souls

are the vices of anger, jealousy, lust,

greed, gluttony, vanity, and laziness.

We traditionally call these the seven

deadly sins, and they are truly deadly.

When we give in to them, we cut off

our souls from the source of real life:

God. But Jesus is the Good Shepherd,

who lays down his life for us,

literally. Jesus suffered and died on

the cross, taking away the deadly

consequence of sin. This selfless act

has saved us by offering the

forgiveness and reconciliation that

our souls, weak and weary from the

attacks of evil, desperately need.

What a gift to be in the care of such a

Shepherd!

John 10:11-18: How should

Catholics encourage Christian

unity?

PAGE TWO FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 26TH, 2015

Last week Bishop

Robert McElroy was

installed as the sixth

bishop of San Diego Diocese in a service at St.

Therese of Carmel Church. At the beginning of

Mass he said “It is with great joy and happiness

that I come to you today, and with great enthusi-

asm for all that lies before us.” Later in his homily

Bishop McElroy said, “The homeless, incarcerated,

elderly, the unborn and victims of human traffick-

ing needed to be brought into the Church, and that

it’s important to “build bridges” with the commu-

nity in conformance with the teachings of the

Church.” As we thank the Lord for Bishop

McElroy as our bishop, let us keep him in our

prayers that the gracious Lord may continue to

bless him and our diocese.

I am so pleased to see many of our children partic-

ipating in the children’s Liturgy of the Word at

the 11:00 am Sunday Mass. I thank the parents

and teachers for providing this opportunity to our

children. As you know, it is a great opportunity as

well as important for your children to learn and

understand the Sunday readings at their levels. I

therefore, urge parents to encourage their children

to use this opportunity to actively participate in

the Holy Eucharist.

This week I would like to reflect on the last week’s

topic, “Mass,” in which the focus was on active

participation at Mass. It reminds me of an inci-

dent, a week before my ordination, I went to meet

to my spiritual director for my regular spiritual

guidance. He gave me a piece of advice which will

ever remain in my heart. He said, “Make every

Mass as your first Mass.” I remember this every

time I celebrate the Holy Eucharist. I do not take

Mass for granted or treat it as an obligation. I

love and cherish each Mass I celebrate and pay

utmost attention and reverence whenever I cele-

brate it.

I am deeply saddened when people say Mass is

boring, or when parents don’t make an effort to

teach their children the significance of Mass. We

need to remember that Mass is a celebration of

Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross at Calvary. At Mass,

Jesus’ saving action of pouring out his life to the

Father is made present when we celebrate the Eu-

charist. Therefore, the Eucharist is an action; it is

the action of God the Son pouring out His love to

God the Father. The priest who speaks the words

of consecration pours himself out with Jesus—in

the person of Jesus. When the priest is praying

the Eucharistic prayer, the entire congregation

should be united with each word he speaks. The

congregation should be exercising its own priest-

hood and offering up the Son to the Father with

the priest. Therefore, a prompt, loud and clear

response to the priest’s prayers by every member

of the congregation is the most important external

sign of a well-participated holy Mass. This creates

an atmosphere of enthusiasm and community

prayer in the church.

Being active at Mass is not limited to participating

in a specific ministry at Mass. This, of course, is

necessary. A person might be a perfectly wonder-

ful cantor, or a clear and articulate lector, or a dili-

gent and dignified usher, or an active participant

in any other ministry. These are God-given tal-

ents which can, and should be used to serve God

and His holy people. But in order to participate in

the holy Mass in a meaningful way, everything we

do must be carried out in harmony with the interi-

or disposition necessary to remain ever aware that

we are taking part in nothing less than God’s sav-

ing action in Jesus, mysteriously made present in

our midst. With this disposition, our participation

at holy Mass will make Mass for us a meaningful

experience and increase our devotion and longing

for the Eucharist.

How do you actively participate and make Mass an

integral part of your life?

Fr. Devdas

Daily Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;

For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or

Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;

For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests;

For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you

The priests dearest to me; The priest who baptized me;

The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me

Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me;

All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way

(especially……………..….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,

And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity,

Amen
