From the Pastor

To the parish family of St. Martha, The Gospel reading for the 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time provides us with an opportunity to un-pack the message contained in the miracle story told by St. Luke concerning the widow of Nain.

Biblical scholars point out that many Scriptural texts contain “code words” that indicate a deeper meaning be-hind a story or an event that is recorded. In this account from Luke 7: 11-17 we discover several important “code words.” The miracle occurred at the city gate, which is key to understanding the deeper meaning of the Gospel text for our lives. The city represents the place where human life takes place, where meaning is found in the lives of ordinary folks as they struggle with relationships and community responsibilities. The cemetery to which the dead man is being carried represents the ultimate termination of relationships and life in the community. The gate is the place that is neither inside nor outside the city. In biblical stories the gate is where beggars, lepers, and other sick people gather. They are not accepted in the city because they are not whole. They cannot be taken to the cemetery because they are not yet dead. These people stand at the gate begging, appealing for mercy, longing to be made whole, desiring to enter the city where they can live out their lives in the normal give-and-take of community. The gate is a “code word” for those in-between places in our lives where we are tested and decisions are made, where we long for a change, and pray for a miracle that will make us whole again.

In this Gospel account Jesus stops at the gate and looks not so much at the dead man being carried to the cemetery, but on his mother who is a widow. This is another “code word” used in the Bible and it signi-fies someone who is at the mercy of others because the person has no means of support (without a husband or a son). In this masterfully told story Jesus sees her, is moved to pity for her, speaks to her, and, after call-ing the son back to life, gives him back to her. This story reveals how the place of the gate is really a place where important decisions are made by us and for us. It is the place where God’s gift of salvation is experi-enced and lived out. More importantly, the Gospel story illustrates the possibilities of what can happen when, at the gate, we who follow Jesus Christ make the decision to choose life, to walk the way of mercy and healing, and to take the time to notice the widow, the orphan, and the refugee in our midst. St. Luke’s story concludes today with a proclamation of faith by the crowd: “God has vis-ited his people.” We gather today for Eucharist, a blend of many crowds, standing at many gates. May we recognize the power of God that can transform us into the Body of Christ and enable us to bring the gift of salvation to all those who seek to be made whole. Through our witness and commitment, may God visit his people.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT “And when the Lord saw her, he

had compassion on her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’” Luke 7:13

This verse is a great reminder that the Stewardship lifestyle is one of service, putting God first and to “love one another.” Unfortunately today, many people have “passion” for activities they enjoy - their job and off-work activities. Many times our “passion” to excel is at the ex-pense of someone else. Maybe we need to focus on a little less passion for our individual concerns and a lot more compassion for others.

SECOND FAMILY CARE TEAM® MINISTRY NEEDS HELP

Second Family is a Care Team® ministry that uses the special God-given gifts of compassion, love, and grace to offer friendship and encouragement to those in need in the parish and in the community. Working through St. Martha Social Ministries and in partnership with Interfaith Care-Partners®, Care circles of volunteers may choose to visit someone who is ill or lonely, provide an occasional meal, help with errands and transportation, or share a devotional and the gift of friendship. In other words, Second Family Care Team members are like old-fashioned neighbors, serving together in a team approach to make a differ-ence. Not surprisingly, as relationships deepen, Care cir-cles become “family” and with your “bite sized” commit-ment blessings flow both ways. We hope you will prayerfully consider joining the St. Mar-tha 2nd Family Ministry to plant and grow a team in our community. Include a member of the community in your life and make a commitment of love in His service and in His name. Currently the St. Martha 2nd Family Ministry is in need of new team members to visit a new parishioner who moved to Kingwood to be closer to her daughter. This wonderful lady is lonesome and because of health issues cannot get out on her own right now. An hour once a week or once a month is all that is required. We also have a request to take someone grocery shopping to Kroger’s once a week. Summertime only is fine if you have a job that gives you time off in the summer. If you would like to volunteer to visit weekly or monthly or take someone to the grocery store or for more information, or to learn about how to become a Second Family Care Team member, please phone Peggy Wehe – Ministry Leader – 281-360-3244 or e-mail [email protected] .

If you or a loved one are in Kingwood Hospital, and would like a Communion Minister to visit, call the church office at 281-358-6637 to let us know. Hospital regula-tions require us to have the patient’s name and room number before we send someone.

Rosary Guild The Rosary Guild will meet on Sunday, June 9, from 2:00—4:00 p.m. in Room 2 at the Wood-

land Hills Campus. Anyone interested in joining or learning about our work are welcome to our meeting. Contact JoAnna Loup at 281-361-

0391 or e-mail [email protected].

SENIOR CITIZEN LUNCHEONS The St. Martha Senior Citizen Luncheons (1st, 3rd and

5th Wednesdays) will not meet during the summer (through Labor Day).

The schedule for the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at First United Methodist Church remains unchanged.

Healthcare Options in Our Community: Where do I go from here?

Healthcare options can be difficult and confusing. That is why we have designed an expert panel comprised of long-term acute care hospital, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitative services, nursing home, skilled and long-

term care; home health services, caregiver support services, assisted living and memory care, hospice and

end-of-life care to help you understand each process. There will be a brief panel presentation

followed question and answers. Wednesday, June 19th, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 2

at the Woodland Hills Campus. For more information contact Theresa Johnston

at 281-222-3700.

CATHOLICS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Immigration Reform in the US

Catholic Social Teaching on Migration and Refugees The Catholic Catechism instructs the faithful that good government has two duties, both of which must be carried out and neither of which can be ignored. The first duty is to welcome the foreigner out of charity and respect for the hu-man person. Persons have the right to immigrate and thus government must accommodate this right to the greatest extent possible, especially financially blessed nations: "The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the pro-tection of those who receive him." Catholic Catechism, 2241. The second duty is to secure one’s border and enforce the law for the sake of the common good. Sovereign nations have the right to enforce their laws and all persons must respect the legitimate exercise of this right: "Political authori-ties, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adop-tion. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens." Catholic Catechism, 2241. Source: USCCB website: http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/immigration/churchteachingonimmigrationreform.cfm Application of the Social Teachings to the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Moderni-zation Act of 2013 (S-744). This bill addresses many of the elements of comprehensive immigration reform outlined by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The bill was recently approved by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and now moves to the full Senate for debate and approval. S-744 does the following: Requires major advances in border security Requires immigrants to maintain a steady work history, clean criminal records and pay fines and back taxes in or-

der to stay legally in the U.S. Promotes fair competition for jobs by increasing fees and salary requirements for employers hiring temporary for-

eign workers in order to discourage outsourcing jobs to reduce labor costs Mandates that employers use the E-verify system to verify employee immigration status Creates a 13 year pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented individuals that currently must live in

the shadows of our society Provides a process for future flow of immigrants that protects the rights and dignity of all Action for Catholics: Learn about the bill and get involved. While the bill is not perfect and will face amendments in the full Senate, it is a big step to improving a difficult issue. On the weekend of June 15-16 there will be a table in the Narthex for those interested to sign cards supporting immigration reform to be sent to our Senators. Please stop by then and express your interest.

STEWARDSHIP—A WAY OF LIFE

Fruits of Your Labor… RECEPTION COMMITTEE: The Reception Committee has been busy helping with many Church events. Reception served refreshments on Stewardship Weekend, Day of Prayer and Reflection, Rite of Election for the Archdiocese, Con-firmation, and March of Remembrance. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration is personal time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in our Adoration Chapel, located in the back of the church. Adorers commit to one hour each week to spend time in the presence of Christ, strengthening their personal relationship with Him. In the month of May, we had 1,167 hours logged with our regular committed adorers. In addition to this, we had 353 visitors. Our visitors pray for varying amounts of time, so it is impossible for us to give an exact number of hours devoted by them. However, their presence is still a huge statement to the power of prayer and the devotion of our parish to this ministry. We are also so proud of the children who come to pray on Tuesday mornings during their weekly adoration hour! All involved in Eucharistic Adoration bring blessings to the entire parish through their devotion and prayer. Your family is encouraged to attend together at any time.

MARTHA’S KITCHEN Thank you for your continued support to Martha's Kitchen, a twenty-year-old ministry to the commu-nity that could not feed those in need of a meal each weekday without your loyal donations. Your generosity may be expressed through using your Martha's Kitchen envelopes, Faith Direct, or the special Memorial Cards in remembrance of a loved one that are available in the church office. Thank you in advance as we enter into the hot summer months for your prayers and dedication. God Bless! Note: Martha's Kitchen will reopen on Monday, June 10.

For the first time in our nation’s history, the Supreme Court is considering two cases about whether or not marriage should be redefined to include two persons of the same sex. These cases involve the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8, both of which define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The Court is expected to rule on both cases by the end of June. A broad negative ruling could redefine marriage in the law throughout the entire country, becoming the “Roe v. Wade” of marriage. The United States Conference of Catho-lic Bishops has joined with many other organizations in urging the Supreme Court to uphold both DOMA and Proposi-tion 8 and thereby to recognize the essential, irreplaceable contribution that husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, make to society, and especially to children.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

PRAY, FAST, SACRIFICE

The Bishops have encouraged Catholics to participate in a Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty during this Year of Faith. Visit www.usccb.org/life-marriage-liberty to learn more and commit to pray-ing and fasting for life, marriage, and religious liberty. The Bishops have also called for a second Fortnight for Freedom June 21-July 4. Visit www.Fortnight4Freedom.org. Please consider contributing time, talent, and/or treasure to local or national efforts seeking to protect the unique meaning of marriage.

ADVOCATE FOR MARRIAGE Lead messages

Be a witness for the truth of marriage in word and action. Take advantage of opportunities to speak about marriage’s unique meaning in conversation with friends, family, neighbors or co-workers. Share the truth in love. Everyone has inviolable dignity and deserves love and respect. There are many ways to protect the basic hu-man rights of all, but redefining marriage serves no one’s rights, least of all those of children.

What is marriage? Marriage is the permanent and exclu-sive union of one man and one woman, for the good of the spouses and for the procreation and education of chil-dren. One man, one woman—for life. (See Second Vati-can Council, Gaudium et Spes, no. 48). The difference is the difference. Men and women mat-ter. They are equal but different. Sexual difference is es-sential to marriage. Mothers and fathers matter. They aren’t interchange-able. Every child has a basic, natural right to come from and be raised in the loving marital union of his or her own father and mother. Protecting marriage matters to everyone. It’s Catholic social teaching 101: pro-woman, pro-man, pro-child. Re-defining marriage in the law says many false things: women - mothers - are dispensable; men - fathers - are dispensable; what adults want trumps what a child de-serves and has a basic right to.
