From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

DECEMBER 17, 2017

My Dear Friends, Have you noticed in the Nativity scene how the baby

Jesus keeps His tiny hands? Usually it is with half-outreached arms with empty palms up, and do you know why? Because He is thinking: “Look at these good Catholics ... it is MY birthday and look who is getting the gifts! NOT ME but them!” Listen to Jesus my good Christians. If you have a birthday party for your child - maybe at McDonalds - and all the friends bring a gift, and they give gifts to each other

and no gift to the birthday child ... what would the birthday child think of those friends? But what can we give to Jesus? In our hearts, Jesus is buried under a ton of material burdens and sins; a humble and contrite heart, purified by confession, is the best gift we can give to Jesus (Confession, Holy Communion and Almsgiving).

All of us are sinners, from the Pope, to the Bishop, to us priests, to all human beings. All of us need God’s forgiveness. And Jesus will forgive us every sin: murder, hatred, malicious gossip, abortion, missing Sunday Masses, neglecting the poor, drunkenness, excessive gambling, hazardous behavior toward creation, reckless driving, etc., etc.!!! I know that sometimes we worry about nonsensical things like, “I don’t go to confession because I don’t remember my act of contrition!” Any verbal expression of sorrow is OK, like “Jesus, I’ll sin no more” or “It is twenty-some years since I’ve been to confession” (twenty-some years?) Well, welcome back home! Are we sure we are going to live another year? Let’s go now to confession before Christmas and receive the peace of Jesus. The Confession schedule is listed in this bulletin.

Today’s Gospel focuses again on John the Baptist, and his confrontation with the Jewish religious authorities, a confrontation that, three years hence, will be repeated against Jesus, with lethal consequences for Him.

It does seem strange, such insistence in the Gospel of John about John’s secondary role in the history of our salvation. The consensus of biblical scholars point out the fact that for a few centuries there has been a group of devotees of John the Baptist, independent from Christians, (see Acts 19: 1-7), although the religious leaders of Jerusalem (Sadducees, Pharisees, Scribes) were opposed to both the Baptist and Christ groups. It was important for the Evangelist to point out the exact words of the Baptist in answering the question, “Who are you?” With his own answer: “I am not!” And then, after denying any other recognition as the prophet Elijah, who ascended into heaven in a fiery chariot (2Kings: 1-18) without dying, just like Enoch (Gen 5: 24). In quoting Isaiah (Is 40: 3),the Baptist is saying that he is the voice announcing the Good News of the coming Messiah (Christ) with a true Baptism. At the time of John, the Baptism ritual was common among the Jews. The Scribes used the clean washing as a gesture and as an introductory for the pagan

converts to the religion of the one true God. For us the lesson is twofold: first to recognize that only

Jesus is the true Savior of all of us; and, second, to straighten-up our sinful or lax lives to accept and contemplate the mystery of Jesus’ incarnation.

So, among the Christmas preparation, let’s put forward the best gift we freely give Jesus: our love! If we need returning back to our Jesus, then let’s do it! If it means to bring back to Jesus, our friends and relatives lost to God, let’s talk with courage, inviting them back home to Holy Communion to become again lovers of Jesus.

As you know, parishes are very dependent on a very generous Christmas and Easter Collection, even if nowadays times are so difficult. If you will be away, please use your Christmas envelope, either before you go or after you return. Or you can use our Online Giving system through our website at www.stmartha.org. If you do not normally use an envelope, or are a visitor here at Christmas, please use the envelopes in the pews or at the entrance of the Church and Hall. Make checks payable to St. Martha Church. Thanks a zillion!

Christmas is a time of family parties. Enjoy your Christmas. BUT if you drive, please do not drink; or have a designated driver (your spouse is the ideal one, right?).

I would like to remind you dear parishioners that when you begin your Christmas list, don’t forget “Charity begins at home.” Below are many ways of giving (instead of to the IRS) to those who really need it. Remember the blessings given to you by God this year: 1. Our children in St. Martha School. Our children are

truly our future; support tuition for the poor pupils! 2. Support for Catholic Charities, Caritas and St. Vincent

de Paul Society which ministers to the hungry and poor. 3. Support for our people with AIDS in our Bethesda House. 4. Help for St. Martha’s Day Care babies. 5. Cardinal Mooney High School. 6. Support for the Pallottine Missions and Seminarians.

The deadline for the 2017 Catholic Faith Appeal is January 4, 2018. If you have not finished your pledge commitment, you can do so until January. Remember St. Martha receives 100% of all money over our goal! This can help our parish tremendously, and thank you for your generous contributions to the Catholic Faith Appeal.

The Holidays are an extremely busy time for everyone, especially our pr iests and religious. If you would like to make an appointment with one of our dear priests, please call our church receptionists to leave a message for your favorite priest. Each priest makes his own appointments.

Thanks to a generous donation from one of our parishioners, the 2018 parish calendars have arrived and will be distributed this weekend, December 16 & 17. Be sure to pick one up for you home or office.

Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy:

He is always with us. Jesus promised this when he gave the disciples the same mission he gives to each of us: Go, walk with each other. Do not be afraid to embrace God’s gift of life. Whatever storms or trials we

face, we are not alone. He is with us.

Miracles happen. But they need prayer! -Pope Francis

ADVENT JOURNEY TO JESUS THROUGH MARY Third Sunday in Advent

“Let us ask Our Lady, in a very special way: Mary, mother of Jesus, be a mother to each of us, that we, like you, may be pure in heart, that we, like you, love

Jesus; that we, like you, serve the poorest for we are all poor. First let us love our neighbors and so fulfill God’s desire that we become carriers of his love and compassion.” -St. Mother Teresa

The third Sunday in Advent is known as “Gaudete Sunday” which means “ rejoice!” Our third Saint in our preparation for total consecration to Jesus through Mary is the perfect example of living this life of joy. St. Mother Teresa is known all over the world for her generous and loving heart, especially for the poorest of the poor. The service and missionary work that she did was all with such deep love constantly accompanied by a joy which radiated forth from within her.

To come to understand St. Mother Teresa, the founder of the Missionaries of Charity, is to meditate on the words of Jesus on the Cross, “I thirst.” The deepest desire of the hearts of both St. Mother Teresa and the Mother of God is to satisfy the thirst of the Heart of Jesus for love and for souls. While St. Louis de Montfort and St. Maximilian Kolbe show us deeply the theological significance to dependence on the Mother of God, St. Teresa shows us these truths in simplicity through her life of love. Mother Teresa always entrusted her prayers and mission to Our Blessed Lady, knowing that only through Mary could she truly love and serve Jesus.

“Loving trust and total surrender made Our Lady say ‘yes’ to the message of the angel. And cheerfulness made her run in haste to serve her cousin Elizabeth. That is so much our life: say ‘yes’ to Jesus and running in haste to serve him in the poorest of the poor. Let us keep very close to Our Lady and she will make that same spirit grow in each of us.” In fact, Mother Teresa’s love for Our Lady was so great that on one particular occasion a younger sister came to her and asked, “Mother, why do we always focus on Mary so much? Shouldn’t we focus more on Jesus,” to which Mother Teresa turned to her and with a smile said, “Yes, but if there is no Mary, then we will have no Jesus.”

She had a simplicity in her joy, and this led to the beautiful service she did. The entire focus was to love Jesus and to love Him through loving others by bringing His love to them. St. Teresa had this understanding that the best way to prepare ourselves for the love of Jesus was through Mary. Therefore, the best way to prepare this Advent is through the great Mother of God.

As we continue our Advent Journey to Jesus through Mary, let us remember the words of Mother Teresa: “How much we need Mary to teach us what it means to satiate God’s Thirsting Love for us, which Jesus came to reveal to us. She did it so beautifully. Yes, Mary allowed God to take possession of her life by her purity, her humility, and her faithful love…Let us seek to grow, under the guidance of our Heavenly Mother…”

¡Buenas noticias!
