From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto … Last Sunday, we, the St. Martha’s faith family,

celebrated Our Lord Jesus Christ’s triumphant Resurrection from the dead. Although confined at home, our two Easter celebrations (Holy Saturday and Sunday) with a sizable crowd on the web of 1,734 hits showed us clerics your faith and devotion.

The meaning of Jesus’ resurrection is the assurance of LIFE ETERNAL for all of us, the believers! If we pick up our cross daily and follow the good Lord with love, sacrifice and prayer, then we will live with Jesus ETERNALLY IN PARADISE, first with our soul, and after the second coming and final judgment, with our risen and transformed body! Alleluia!

All of us, dear friends, will pick up our bodies from the ashes and dust to which they were reduced, and we will assume our incorruptible and immortal soul and body, and live forever like angels! Let us live in Jesus now, so that we will live forever with Him in Paradise! Right now, we, the Catholic faithful, are proclaiming Jesus’ second coming every day at Mass: “We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.” A billion strong religious people, we Catholics have influenced world history more than any nation or kingdom.

Today’s Gospel has done more to our proof of the Resurrection than any other , and paradoxically, it does it through the lack of faith of Thomas, one of the 12 Apostles, who very crudely said: “I’ll never believe the risen Jesus unless I see the mark of the nails on his hands and put my finger in the nail marks and my fist into His side.” The ancient followers of Christ were not all cynical, like Thomas, but also the ladies who went to the empty tomb with Peter and John, if they had faith in Jesus’ prophecy of the Resurrection, why go to check it out? It is instructive to know that only Mary, the Mother of Jesus, did not go to the tomb. She knew, she believed!

The Congregation for Divine Worship decreed (May 23, 2000) that “Throughout the world, the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Chr istian wor ld to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that human kind will experience in the years to come.” Today is Divine Mercy Sunday and St. Martha will livestream a Holy Hour from our Church at 2 p.m. Devotion to the Divine Mercy was promoted by St. Faustina Kowalska, canonized by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000. We truly need the mercy of God in these tragic days of the pandemic. May the good Lord shorten our suffering through St. Faustina’s intercession.

The most common prayer of Divine Mercy is the famous Divine Mercy Chaplet. Other novenas are: The Miraculous Medal, St. Jude Thaddeus, St. Vincent Pallotti, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

It is so incredible to me that some Christians still are so much afraid of God’s justice that they miss completely the crazy love of our merciful Jesus.

Our Diocese has traditionally celebrated Yom Hashoah on the third Sunday of Easter, but Bishop Dewane had to cancel this year such celebration,

commemorating the millions of Jews exterminated in the concentration camps in WWII. Please offer your prayers that God helps us build a climate of understanding and love with our ancestors in the faith. One question asked by a pupil in St. Martha School was brought to my attention, “If Jewish people followed Jesus, why do we still have Jews today?”

A sizable minority of Jesus’ co-religionaries followed Him because of His miracles. The Jewish majority, which was divided into several religious, regional and political groups, did not; most notably hostile to Jesus were the Sadducees for political reasons (for fear of provoking a ferocious and

violent backlash by the Romans), and the Pharisees, who could not accept Jesus’ claim of divinity. All these Jewish groups ceased to exist with the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70 A.D. Mark, Luke and Matthew wrote their Gospels before or soon after the destruction of the Jewish Nation, preserving the historical flavor of Jesus’ times. A generation later, the final redaction of John’s Gospel was written by an eyewitness, but for a Gentile congregation not steeped in the teaching

of the Prophets of Jewish Scriptures, and just not cognizant nor interested in historical details, but considering only the remnant of old Israel: The Jews. The Jewishness of the first Christians was supplanted and eclipsed by the overwhelming Gentile converts and by the decisions of the Apostles to forgo circumcisions and Old Testament dietary laws. Besides John had by now reflected on Jesus’ teachings and expressed it in anti-ethical terms, like day-night, light-darkness, disciples-Jews.

Anti-Semitism then went from Pagan to the Christian world, and the antithesis Christian-Jews were brought to the most terrible consequences thru humiliation, killing and hatred of the remnant of Israel! The holocaust by the National Socialists (Nazis) in World War II was the culmination of countless years of persecution of our ancestors in the faith: more than half the people martyred in the Nazi extermination camps were Jews. On April 26, let us forge the bond of love and respect with our Jewish sisters and brothers so that the Holocaust will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN and that we, the followers of Jesus the Jew, will always be friends and bound to destroy anti-Semitism.

Wednesday, April 22, is Earth Day. Care of God’s creation is one of the basic principles of Catholic Social Doctrine. Observing Earth Day provides us an opportunity to highlight the importance we all play as proper stewards of God’s earth. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, in his Message of the World Day of Peace (2007), wrote: Experience shows that the disregard for the environment always harms human coexistence. It becomes more and more evident that there is an inseparable link.

Please don’t forget, every Sunday from Noon to 2 p.m. we will have distribution of Holy Communion at the gate behind the Church by the sacristy.

Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy:

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

We are committed to continuing the good work of St. Martha during this time of crisis. Our Parish is dependent upon

Prayer Against Coronavirus Lord Jesus Christ, our Divine physician, we

ask you to guard and protect us from Coronavirus COVID-19 and all serious

illness. For all that have died from it, have mercy; for those that are ill now, bring

healing. For those searching for a remedy, enlighten them; for medical caregivers

helping the sick, strengthen and shield them. For those working to contain the spread, grant them success; for the afraid, grant peace. May your precious blood be our

defense and salvation. By your grace, may you turn the evil of disease into moments of consolation and hope. May we always fear the contagion of sin more than any illness.

Do you own appreciated stock?

Did you know that you can avoid paying the capital gains tax associated with the selling of stock by transferring it to St. Martha (if you have held it at least one year)? Each year, St. Martha receives stock transfers ranging from $500 to over $25,000. For some, alleviating capital gains tax associated with selling stock has allowed them to be able to give very generously. Transferring stock to St. Martha is a simple process and usually can be completed over the phone or via email. Please contact Teressa McCoy in the Parish Office at 941-366-4210 or at [email protected] and we can provide you with details and instructions.

Thank you for your support of St. Martha Parish.

Our parishioners are our only source of funds and your contributions keep the lights on, enable parish ministries,

and support our outreach to the poor.

Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate

As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process

as a means of putting our faith into action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square - and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh language. We must bear witness to a better way. You are invited to join the Civilize It! campaign launched by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), to promote civility, model love for neighbor, and build community. Visit https://dioceseofvenice.org/offices/other/2020-election-resources-english-and-spanish to take the pledge, and to read the Election and Political Activities Guide released by the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Our Sympathy is extended to the families of all those who have recently passed. We pray for you and your loved ones,
