Message from our Pastor

Todays Readings First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13). Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23). Richness of the Spirit Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful dis-ciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God. Welcome

Dear Parish Family, Saturday marks a special day for me in my life. It is my 11th an-niversary of ordination to the priesthood (or 4019 days if you prefer that count!) I am very grateful to God for the incredible gift of serving him and His people and I feel so blessed to be able to serve as a priest here at St. Martha’s. I appreciate all of your

prayers and support and together we can give thanks to God for his kind-ness and generosity. We also thank God for the birth of the Church that we celebrate on Pentecost Sunday. When the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, it gave them the courage and the strength they needed to share the Gospel with all the world. We remember that incredible moment in our salvation history because the Holy Spirit began to inspire the Church and still is present in our midst today! We pray the Holy Spirit continues to lead and guide us as we seek to grow in holiness.

Fr. T.J.

Feast of Pentecost - May 31 The Holy Spirit Gives Us Strength

As recounted in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, Pentecost occurred when the followers of Jesus were, filled with fear, clustered together in a room and were suddenly surprised by the dynamic presence of the Holy Spirit in their midst. Strong wind and flame seemed to sweep the room, and the Apostles were so filled with the gifts of the Spirit that they emerged with new confidence, energy and a newly discovered strength. They experienced a new life in the Holy Spirit. In our secular culture, Pentecost goes largely un-observed. “Pentecost” cards don’t pop up on store shelves weeks in ad-vance, and there’s no mer-chandising that remotely compares to Easter and Christmas. Yet make no mistake. To Christians, Pentecost is a great cele-bration, sometimes called the birthday of the Church. The word Pentecost has its roots in the Greek word for “fifty;” Pentecost comes fifty days after the Res-urrection on the seventh Sunday after Easter. Why was Pentecost such a watershed event in the life of the Church? As Christian stewards, we know we are called to live a life using the “fruits of the Spirit.” This calling has its roots in the momentous events of Pentecost. Up until that time, the followers of Jesus were still a somewhat disorganized band of

believers, still in shock over the events of the cruci-fixion, still confused about the meaning of the sight-ings of the Risen Lord. Pentecost abruptly and forever changed that. Sud-

denly, missionary disciples were born, followers both called and sent forth. Like us, they were called togeth-er, in community. They became aware that their great mission was to reach, not just their Jewish broth-ers and sisters in Palestine, but the disparate crowds who visited Jerusalem and beyond. Like us, they were called to bring Jesus to the world. The Holy Spirit brought courage to replace fear, understanding to replace confusion, faith to replace doubt. The same Holy Spirit moves in our own lives, perhaps not always with the drama of that first Pentecost, but with the same spiritual energy. The Spirit calls us within our Church community to share Jesus with others,

just as the disciples were called. Our task is to embrace the strength and energy of the life of the Holy Spirit moving through us. Let’s celebrate Pentecost this year as heirs to this great moment in the life of our Church, as stewards in-spired to be people of hope for others in this world desperate for God’s presence.

To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open your heart and invite Him in! Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts, words, and actions eve-ry day! Be grateful for all the gifts God has given you! Regard-less of our individual circum-stances, God has given all of us many blessings. What we do with those gifts is our gift back to God! By generously sharing eve-rything we have and everything we are, we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered” and our lives truly reflect God’s light, love, and mercy. We continue to see an over-whelming display of stewardship with our Sharing is Caring Capi-tal Campaign, even during this difficult time, with gifts and pledges total-ing $4,326,952 and we are getting closer and closer to our goal of being debt free

and honoring our commitment to the Archdiocese. We are blessed to be part of a beautiful

faith community and are called to continue building God’s kingdom at St. Martha. To realize this vi-sion, we truly need your help. To-gether, we will continue to build a stronger church financially and lay a solid foundation for the fu-ture. To make a commitment, fill out the card below and drop it in the collection basket or mail to: St. Martha Catholic Church, 4301 Woodridge Parkway, Por-ter, TX 77365 or fill out the online commitment card at: https://www.stmartha.com/commitment-card.

A gift, in any amount, will bring us closer to our goal and allow us to fulfill our mission.

Pentecost Sunday “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)

Stewardship of Treasure

Stewardship

This weekend we celebrate the feast of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit among the fearful believers of the early Church. Saint Paul re-minds us of the special power the Holy Spirit has bestowed upon us to give us confidence and how that power gives us the potential to live extraordi-nary lives of faith. Good stewards recognize this power and use their gifts, through God’s channel of grace, to transform their lives and the lives of others. Good stewards know that it is through the Holy Spirit that they can proclaim: “Jesus is Lord.” How do we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us to give us strength, confidence and hope?

For the weekend of May 23 & 24 your Stewardship Gifts of Treasure resulted in:

Great News ! Martha’s Kitchen is slowly re-opening following the mandat-ed Covid-19 shutdown. Limited “Carry Out” meals are being served and will continue throughout May. The Kitchen’s goal starting in June will be to serve “Eat In Meals”. So far the meals have been prepared by limited teams of eight volunteers. As our services expand many of our cur-rent volunteers are in Covid-19 high risk categories and may not choose to work. Due to these circumstances volunteer op-portunities should be available. If interested contact Sister Car-men at 713-224-2522. The safety and protection of our volunteers and guests is our upmost concern. The Kitchen is following all local, state, CDC and federal mandates for operating a safe food service in these difficult times.

May God Bless You!
