LIFELINES [It] is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States come to realize the grave threats to the Church’s public moral witness presented by a radical secularism which finds increasing expression in the political and cultural spheres. … Of particular concern are certain attempts being made to limit that most cherished of American freedoms, the freedom of religion. Many of you have pointed out that concerted efforts have been made to deny the right of conscientious objection on the part of Catholic individuals and institutions with regard to cooperation in intrinsically evil practices. Others have spoken to me of a worrying tendency to reduce religious freedom to mere freedom of worship without guarantees of respect for freedom of conscience. ~Pope Benedict XVI, Address to the Bishops of the United States on their Ad Limina Visit, January 19, 2012

LENTEN INSERT

2012 REGULATIONS FOR LENT All faithful of the Diocese of Scranton are reminded of Diocesan Statute No. 41, which addresses the penitential aspect of Lent: “The season of Lent is penitential in nature and during Lent penance should be not only internal and individual, but also external and social (Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 5, 109). Pastors are obliged to avoid scheduling activities in the parishes which in any way could possibly detract from the external and social penance required by Lent.” The following fast and abstinence regulations are observed: • Good Friday, April 6, is a day of fast and abstinence. • Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. • All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Good Friday and on all Fridays during Lent. • All Catholics over 18 years of age to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Those

bound by this rule may take only one full meal and two smaller meals unless dispensed or excused. LENTEN REMINDERS

Lent is a time for sacrifice and for spiritual renewal as we reflect upon our baptism and the call given to each of us to walk as disciples of the Lord. We are provided with three personal challenges associated with our individual observance of Lent: • Almsgiving – generously giving to those in need • Fasting – practicing self-discipline and self-denial • Prayer – reading, hearing and reflecting on the Word of God Lent is also a penitential season. It is a time to seek forgiveness, to look inward, and to admit our shortcomings and failures. It is a time to regroup and to prepare. How can you spend your time during Lent? • By “giving up” things you hunger after, such as sweets or alcohol; or activities you desire, such as vacations, concerts

or movies. • By “doing” things to help others, such as offering an extra donation to the poor or helping those in need by providing

food or clothing. • By “adding” to our normal routine, such as going to daily Mass, praying the Stations of the Cross & going to confession.

SCHEDULE FOR STATIONS OF THE CROSS Tuesday, March 6th—following 8:30AM Mass at St. Augustine Church

Friday, March 9th—following Noon Mass at St. Francis Church Friday, March 9th—6:30PM at St. Augustine Church

ROSARY DURING LENT The Rosary will be held before all weekday Masses. Volunteers are encouraged to lead the Rosary. You don’t need to wait for Fr. Cas, as he may be hearing Confessions. If someone would like to lead the Rosary, please do so.

EASTER FLOWER ENVELOPES Easter Flower Donation Envelopes are in your envelope boxes. Space available on the back for memorials.

LENTEN READING MATERIALS In the back of our Churches are several items for Lenten reading. Please feel free to take a copy home with you and use as part of your daily Lenten meditations. Little Black Books for Lent are also available.

OPERATION RICE BOWL REFLECTION: CALL AND RESPONSE In today’s first reading, Abraham responds faithfully to God, and God bestows blessings on him and all of his descendants. During Lent, we are called to listen to God’s voice in our lives and to respond in faith. This week through Operation Rice Bowl, we learn about adults and children in Vietnam who struggle with disabilities. We pray that we may recognize the inherent dignity in all of God’s people, and we fast so that our sacrifices may bring new life to others. We give so that CRS can continue to help people with disabilities receive a quality education and find productive work. The Rice Bowl Collection will be taken up on Holy Thursday.

Page 4: Bulletin March 04, 2012

Lent continues until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.

FOOD CARDS/FOOD PANTRY It is time once again to think about those with needs greater than our own. For some families in need we will be giving GIFT CARDS to an area grocery store so that recipients can get the groceries that they truly need, for others we will be giving an EASTER FOOD BASKET. EASTER FOOD CARD DONATIONS: We have a total of (16) families on our Food Card list. If you know of any family or individual who needs help, please call the rectory or put a note in the collection basket. If you have put someone on the list in the past and they no longer need help, please let us know. You may put your donation, (check or cash), in the collection basket in an envelope marked “Food Cards” or mail it to the rectory. All donations are needed and are greatly appreciated. In this economy, those who need help need it more than ever. To date we have a total of $ 50.00.

MARCH During the month of March The Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic Women would like to remind the faithful that the Feast of the Annunciation on March 26th celebrates the actual Incarnation of Our Savior the Word made flesh in the womb of His mother, Mary. Please pray that we come to full understanding of the Pro-Life Teachings of the Church and make every effort to support the protection of the unborn. Families with children should teach them the value God places on human life by explaining Mary’s Fiat found in the Gospel of Luke 1:26-56. Help children to discover God’s plan for them by teaching and praying with them the prayers that relate to this passage: the Hail Mary, the Angelus and the Magnificat. Also, March 19th is the Feast of St. Joseph please remember Bishop Bambera in prayer on that day.
