College Planner & PoliciesWelcometothe2018schoolyear!

Yesterday all students remained in their home class for lessons 1 and 2. During this time, new and returning students were welcomed and teachers had the opportunity to remind the girls of general housekeeping matters. Each student in Years 4-12 also received a CollegePlanner. Class Teachers visited College expectations and student policies which are located at the front of the College Planner (pages 7-25). These included the:

- UniformPolicy- MobilePhonePolicy- HarassmentPolicy- DrugEducationPolicy- ChildProtection- ICTAcceptableUsePolicy- AssessmentandReportingPolicy- AcademicHonestyPolicy

I ask parents to please take the time and familiarise yourselves with these College

expectations and student policies and sign the College Planner on pages 15, 19 and 23 to

indicate that you have seen and read these.

SupervisionAs a school, we have a 'dutyof care' towards all our students. While the law recognises that sometimes accidents occur and can not be always prevented, the College takes the safety of students very seriously. We have a responsibility of ensuring the type of supervision which a parent would provide. Supervision is dependent on the age of a student and the type of activity which she is taking part in. I would like to give some reminders about several points which arise from the College’s 'dutyofcare' -

1. Each school day, students will be supervised within the College grounds from 8:30am (Reception - Year 6) and 8:20am (Years 7 - 12).

Students are also supervised during recess and lunch times.

2. During the school day, no student is permitted to leave the College grounds without permission from a parent

3. For safety reasons, students are not permitted to use the playground equipment unless supervised by a teacher

4. When dismissed in the afternoon, students are expected to leave the College grounds and proceed directly home.

Students attending activities organised by the College outside of regular school hours (sports, drama practice, debating, etc...) will be supervised.

Weaskthatparentscollecttheirdaughter/spromptlyattheendoftheschoolday

andattheendofCo-Curricularactivities.

5. When a student is absent, parents are asked to contact the College and advise of the absence. Parents will be contacted if the College has not been advised.

These measures allow both parents and staff to have a shared understanding and ensure a responsible degree of safety for the young people in our care.

PARKING: Parking and school drop off and pick-ups are always a problem! Remember that the restricted area outside of the Barnard Street gate is a KiSS AnD DrOP zOnE - The driver may not leave the car. After school, teachers will bring the children

to you at your car. Please be considerate of the neighbours and DO nOT pull up in front of driveways, including our own. Inspectors are always around at the beginning of the year and the fines are expensive! This area is for all parents! If you want to come in you must not park there during the restricted hours. This is fair for all parents and we ask that you respect this rule. A reminder too that you are not allowed to do a U turn in front of a school.

U N I F O R M : S t u d e n t s a r e reminded that the correct wearing of the uniform is a pre-requisite for attendance. Any student who is unable to wear the correct uniform should have a note of explanation from the parent in her Communication Book / Planner, and this is to be shown to her class teacher. All clothing and effects should be clearly labelled with the student’s name.

REMEMBER: We have a ‘no Hat no Play’ policy and so, please make sure your daughter has her sport hat named and with her every day or leaves it at school. Years 4 to 6

students have a School Planner, so it is important that you read the information and policies in the front. Please support us with this, as the policies are clear and are important for the school and for the girls. Reception to Year 3 students will bring home a copy of the Uniform Policy for you to keep. We ask that students only wear sport uniform on the days that it is required. The rules apply equally to everyone. If there is a valid reason while they are not in the correct uniform, then please supply a note in the diary or message book. Black or navy ribbons only and hair past the shoulder must be tied back.

Primary Newsfrom Ms. Cate O’Leary

Primary School Coordinator

“If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on

learning.”Carol Dweck

Yesterday we welcomed our students old and new to their new classes for 2018. There were many smiles

and a building sense of excitement as students eagerly waited for the bell to ring, so they could see their new classroom and meet their teachers. The beginning of the year can be a challenging time for students and for parents so always remember to come and ask any questions or express any concerns as soon as they arise. If you feel that you need a bit of time, then see your child’s teacher to make an appointment. It is busy in the morning and afternoons and teachers like to give the proper time and consideration to your concerns.

Our primary staff have been spending considerable time planning and preparing curriculum programs, looking at the specific needs of the children in their care and organising appealing and exciting learning spaces for them. We thank them for their continued dedication, professionalism and hard work.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT: Thank you to the many parents who joined us for Morning Tea yesterday. We appreciated the ‘old parents’ welcoming our new families.

NOTICES: at the beginning of every year there are always many notices that need to be signed. Please check with your daughter and return all notes signed, promptly.

LEARNING ASSISTANCE SUPPORT: We are always very grateful to our parents who are able to give up some of their time to support our students across a range of learning and sporting areas. If you are able to help, please let your daughter’s class teacher know ASAP. The more the merrier. If you often pop in with your daughter in the mornings, then perhaps you could ask the teacher if you could help with reading or be of some support in the classroom.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: Will begin in Week 5 and will be on a Tuesday this term and will rotate to a different day each term. If you hear reading or support in the class on that day. Reception and new families will receive a letter shortly.

NUDE FOOD: We begin the year again with Nude Food day on a Friday. If you can manage most days, that would be fantastic.

ATTENDANCE: Good attendance at school is paramount to success. Any absence of 5 days per term is considered chronic absenteeism unless a medical condition prevents them from attending school. It also sets good habits for the future and an attitude that school is important. If a student is absent from school through sickness or any other reason, parents are asked to notify the school office (8267 3818) before 9.00am. There is a voicemail should you call this number outside school hours, a mobile number you can SMS (0429 558 017) and also a dedicated Absentee Email: [email protected]. PLEASE EnSUrE you include your daughter’s CLASS and FirST + LAST nAME in any absentee notification. The school will contact parents of students who are away without an explanation. Following any absence, a note in the Communication Book / Planner should be sent to the teacher. For any absence over a THrEE DAYS a Doctor’s Certificate is needed. A note in the Communication Book / Planner is required for permission to leave the school property during school hours.

FOR YOUR DIARY: Don’t forget our Parent night on Tuesday, February 6th in the Hall. Come along for Wine and Cheese with the staff and other parents at 6:30pm and we will then start the more formal part of the evening at 7:00pm. At 7:15pm we will move to the classrooms and the teachers’ presentations will aim to be finished by 8:15pm. This is a very important night as this is the opportunity for you to meet in class groups and hear all about class routines and expectations. A reminder that this event is only for parents. We hope to see you all there. You will receive a formal letter regarding this evening, early this week.

SPORTS NEWSTerm 1 Sport NominationsThis week students have been asked to nominate for Term 1 Saturday Sport (Basketball, Tennis, Touch, Volleyball, and Water Polo). As always we ask that the commitment required for both training and games is taken into consideration when nominating to play.

Nomination forms have been e-mailed to all students and need to be printed and returned by Monday 5th February. Please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Tim Grant at the school if you have any questions about the Saturday Sport Program.

Secondary School Sport SA - State TeamsEach year the South Australian Secondary Sport Association enters teams in a number of different interstate competitions. Trials will be held throughout the year for the following sports:

Cross Country, AFL Football, Soccer, Hockey, Netball, Softball, Surfing,

Swimming, Tennis, Triathlon, Touch, Volleyball

These teams are of an extremely high standard and guidelines suggest that those wishing to be selected should possess a well above average ability and experience. Any students interested in trying out for one of the State Teams should see Mr Grant in the PE Office for further information about both trials and competitions.

All the best for 2018. We look forward to seeing many of our students representing St. Dominic’s in the sporting arena!

The preservation and development of mother tongue languages

“I am always sorry when any language is lost, because languages are the pedigrees of nations.”

Samuel Johnson

At St Dominic’s Priory College, we offer three languages: English, French and Italian. However, we are well aware that there are many other languages spoken in your homes. As an International Baccalaureate school we are particularly interested in the preservation and development of “mother tongue” languages. Many of you already have your daughters enrolled in a variety of language schools or community programs that will help to preserve the languages spoken in the home. We encourage you to continue to pursue these opportunities with your daughters.

“Learning a new language, just like opening a new window, allows you to see the world with intimacy.”

Pearl Zhu

If you would like to enroll your daughter in an externally delivered language class to continue to develop her oral and written communication skills, then please make contact with relevant providers. The School of Languages provides courses in many languages and might well meet the needs of your daughter(s).

Schooloflanguageshttp://schooloflanguages.sa.edu.au/

Phone:(08)83014800 Email:[email protected]

If your daughter develops her language skills in her “mother tongue” she may well be able to complete SACE studies in this subject in Year 11 and 12.

Foreign language texts in the Conway Library“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of [her] deep and continuing needs, is good for [her].”

Maya Angelou

We have a small collection of texts in a range of languages available in the Conway Library.

• Ifyouwouldliketoaddtothiscollection,wewouldlovetoreceivedonationsorrecommendations.

• Ifyouaretravellingoverseasthisyear,pleasepopintoabookstoreandfindanovel,picturebookorinformationbookthatyouthinkwouldbesuitableforourstudents.

It isn’t always easy for us to know if a book is suitable, especially if we can’t read that language,

so we really do rely on you to help us enlarge our foreign language section.

Thanking you in anticipation!

Parents & FriendsWelcome back to school for 2018. On behalf of the

Parents & Friends Committee, we hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year, and that everybody is refreshed and looking forward to the year ahead. The Parents & Friends Executive is comprised of Michelle Hogan and Jo Duffy as Co-Presidents, Maria Lappas as Vice President and Kate Jensen as Secretary and we look forward to meeting you throughout the year. We thank all the members of the Parents & Friends who help throughout the year at our events to continue to make St. Dominic’s such a great community to be a part of. We would like to welcome any new families to the school and the old scholars who are returning with daughters, as well as any families who are continuing at the school. We invite you to be part of the Committee and attend our meetings and assist us throughout the year.

Family Mass: We are beginning to prepare for our first community event this year, the Family Mass, on Sunday 11 February. The Parents & Friends provide Morning Tea, as well as sell ice blocks, soft drinks and a sausage sizzle after the Mass. This is a great opportunity for new families to meet and join our school community and for others to catch up again. Your help on the day would be much appreciated. We require assistance with preparing, serving or cleaning up. We kindly ask that you sign up online at http://signup.com/go/thMfrVA. Even if you could spare half an hour that would be great.

Parent-Teacher Information NightsWe will also attend your daughters’ Parent Information Night over the next few weeks to provide you with more details on the Parent & Friends activities planned for the year ahead. At these sessions you will be given a copy of the Events for 2018 brochure to assist your family in planning for the school’s social events. Please keep the guide as your reference throughout the year.As the year progresses we will ask for your help via the Bulletin prior to the events. In addition, you can leave your name with your daughter’s class teacher or the front office, accompanied by your offer of help or please feel free to contact us directly:

Michelle: [email protected]: [email protected]

Our first meeting will be held on Wednesday February 21st in the College Office – everyone is welcome, the focus of this meeting will be preparation for Sports Day.We appreciate any assistance that you can offer throughout the year and we thank you in advance. We understand that time is valuable but your help contributes to help make our school a better place for all of our daughters and create the college community. We look forward to meeting you at the upcoming parent meetings and Family Mass Michelle Hogan, Jo Duffy, Maria Lappas & Kate Jensen

for the Parents & Friends’ Committee

Why is it essential that parents attend the Information evenings?

You have entrusted your daughter’s education to teachers who will have a major influence on her education and well-being. You need to know who they are and their expectations. You will be helped by understanding the policies which directly affect your daughter’s learning especially the Academic Honesty Policy and the Assessment Policy.

Each of the Year levels has in addition a special program related to the specific needs of that group. In Year 12 that will be assistance from an educational Psychologist. In Year 11 that will include some attention to the research Project. In Year 10 there will be follow up in the areas of the MYP Personal Project. In Year 9 the agenda will include high quality assistance for parents with the world. In year 8 there will be many important aspects re the day to day world of her learning and well being.
