BUNCEFIELD LANE QUIETWAY HEMEL HEMPSTEAD 2
What is a ‘quietway’?Quietways are a network of cycle and walking routes that link key destinations through less heavily trafficked streets, joining up with off-carriageway routes where possible.
Quietways are: • direct and easy to follow• aimed at less confident cyclists and
pedestrians who want a safe, unthreatening experience
• for cyclists and pedestrians who want to travel at a gentler pace

1Whose work is this?
Hertfordshire County Council Highways (HCC) is working on proposals to create a consolidated, safe, easy and attractive pedestrian and cycle corridor, known as a quietway, in the Maylands Business Park.
Where are the proposed works?
A quietway in Hemel Hempstead is proposed as a north-south corridor on Buncefield Lane, extending from Green Lane in the south to the Nickey Line in the north (see map).

PHASE 4
Why is the quietway needed? In the past 10 years, Buncefield Lane and the surrounding area has continually evolved to a more service driven industry, with a significant number of large residential developments on their way. The quietway will (re)connect people between their work place and homes and can be enjoyed in a more leisurely fashion during weekends and evenings. The quietway will be a consolidated, safe, easy and attractive pedestrian and cycle corridor that connects to a much wider circulation network and the surrounding residential and employment areas. The key aim is a movement towards streets that are not dominated by cars, which is in line with Policy 1 of HCC’s Local Transport Plan 4.
Through the (re)connection and unlocking of the route, the ambition is to:
• inspire a modal shift towards sustainable modes of transport
• reduce the high volume of congesting vehicular traffic
• integrate the pedestrian and cycle route into the surrounding landscape context
• enhance the green infrastructure network, local character and identity
What improvement works are proposed?A quietway is proposed as a north-south corridor on Buncefield Lane, extending from Green Lane in the south, to the Nickey Line in the north. Improvements along the corridors of Buncefield Lane and Cherry Trees Lane will provide safe priority access to pedestrians and cyclists, whilst reducing the volume and speed of vehicular traffic.

Walking Cycling
• Reducing the speed limit and providing a signal-controlled crossing at Breakspear Way will be safer for pedestrians
• Layby lanes by the service stations will be converted to verge and footpath so they can no longer be used as kerbside parking for lorries. This will improve inter-visibility and make the environment safer
• New footways with dropped kerbs and tactile paving will make walking more pleasant and safe
• T h e q u i et way w i l l p rov i d e a s a fe, e a sy and pleasant cycle corridor that connects residential and employment areas
• Improved connectivity, reduced vehicular volumes and speeds, wayfinding signage and improved junctions will all contribute to a safer environment for cyclists

Local residents and businesses Environment
• Closing off sections of Buncefield Lane to vehicle traffic, while maintaining and improving vehicle access to local estates and businesses, will reduce ‘rat-running’
• Improvements to enable walking and cycling will promote a healthy lifestyle
• Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) will be created and new trees will be planted along the quietway
• Providing safe and pleasant pedestrian and cycle routes will reduce vehicular traffic and improve local air quality
What work are we doing in Phase 1a?
• New signal-controlled pedestrian and cycle crossing (“green man”)
• Speed limit reduction on Breakspear Way from 70mph to 50mph
• New shared used pathway for pedestrians and cyclists
• Bus stop relocation • Refresh road markings and new double yellow
line parking restrictions• New wayfinding signage
