TO THE CHURCHES OF THE NORTHWESTERI\I UNITED STATES, FOUNDED ON GOD THE FATHER AND JESUS^ CHRIST THE LORD, GRilCE AND PExlCE FROM JH-I, SANDY, MISTIE AI-^D COREY IN UBERLiHNTDIA, BRAZIL. We are thrilled to hear of the many vi.ctories being won there as a harvest of souls is being brought into the body of Christ and many are growing in Him and learning what 'Experience Christianity' can bo like. Truly the Lord has helped us to rediscover this secret of early church growth and expansion throughout the known world. We had some wonderful times together, one of which was our fruitful search for a real Christmas tree, fSo finally found one in a lady's front yard and bought if for about $6 dug it up and took it home. And there were added unto them those who were being saved*"

    Dear Friendss

Much time has elapsed and many events occured, since last we visited withyou by mail, Yesterday was a day of rejoicing both here and in heaven.

Shortly after our last prayer letter our Christians had a retreat at Harry'sChacara (small piece of land). That same morning the beautiful 2|- year olddaughter of.Itaj who I baptized at Rio Claro in Septembers died of pneumonia,V/e were all at the Chacara when we heard of her sudden death. We all had prayerand Sandy and I were sent to represent the group and to help in anyway we could,Sandy stayed by Terresa'S side (then Ita's non-Christian wife) the whole day.The funeral was at Jose and Ana's homes Terreza's brother-in-law and sister. The entire group came to share in the Bible reading and prayer before the littlebody was taken to the cemetary. We prayed that the Lord would use the unhappyevent to convict others of their need to become as little children and receive

Jose and family appeared to be somewhat resistant to our overtures but afterseveral visits they concented to a regular Bible study. Valdoj Ita and I began"Cristo to Chama" (Christ is Calling You)5 a basic study that leads to a decision. At the conclusion I was sure they were ready to respond, they had been coming toour church meetings and Jose had been participating in our men's training sessionsSunday mornings, V/hon we confronted him with the need to decide for Christ hewas unable. Something was standing between he and The Lord, He had smoked formost of his life and to him it was a sin. I told him that whatever was a sin inhis mind was something that he needed to determine to forsake; he needed to showa repentant spirit. The next time I saw him he hadn't smoked for 30 houi's, thenthree days and a week. He also gave up coffee In Brazil?

Meanwhile Terreza had been showing signs of opening up. Ita had been guidingher closer to God and the loss of her youngest child had opened her heart. Itseems a broken hoart affords more inroads for the Gospel.

We pla.ntied a retreat at my Chacara on a National Holiday, 'Tiridentos Day",Ti(tooth pulling), a dentist, was famous for his roll in attempting toJoad a War for Indppendence. He was hung and became a hero of Brazilian Nationalism, We_iiopQd-to have several baptisms and Valdo and I spent an afternoon makinga dam on our creek idjicli gavo n.s al'p'it foot of wator for baptising and swimming.SOUTH lAKESIIOEE CHRISTIAN17^0 South S^i-th StreetTacoma, Washington 984/4^

  • The day before the retreat, his mother died, VJhen I met Harry at Geralda^s(the deceased) home, he said, "I guess the Lord wants us to think more aboutdeath than about retreats". After three planned retreats, the first last JuJywhen Anizial died, and three deaths within a few hours of each, we began to^think someone was trying to tell us something. Harry and I stayed up all nightat the "watch and had great opportunities to witness after midnight wnen themovement stopped and the thirty or so, staunch mourners, dug in for e nig Needless to say, the retreat was cancelled.

For sometime Harry and I had been alternating weeks at giving dai^ insi^inshots to i-Iarcalina, Anizial's widow. Because of opposition and turmoil withinthe family, we were forced to discontinue the shots. After three weeks withoutinsulin she was swollen from water retention so badly that she could notalk or swallow. V/e continued to visit, to have prayer and Bible reading butwere not allowed to help medically. The tension was great and Satan was wor ingpowerfully through the lives of the three generations of women in that house ifercalina, Maria and Ana I^-Iaria. Sandy has been praying and fasting on Tuesdaysand going there to have a special time of Bible study and prayer, Awee^: agoSunday was Mother's Day and we all went by after our meeting toto the vromen and sing and pray. On Tuesday Sanc^ and Elaine shared toge erwith them and that night Valdo and his wife stayed until midnight, realizingthat Marcalina could not live much longer. At ^sOO A.M., Valdo awoke .^vinghad a dream that he must go immediately to I-Iarcalina. I fear that my faimight be a little weak that early in the morning, with only four hours of sleep. However, Valdo left his home and arrived at Jlarcalina's only minutes before shedied. He immediately took charge and made all the funeral arrangements an ^spread the word to the rest of us. Since she died at 5-00 A.M., she was burieat 5sOO P.M., the same day. It was another open door to preach Christ to manyscores of people. This time a death occurred three days in advance of our nextplanned retreat and we were able to go ahead as planned,

I spent several hours during the week getting the Chacara in shape. We hadbeen warned of poisonous snakes in the creek so I cut away all of the brush fromboth sides (didn't see any snakes), I built a lovely little 'outhouse' and aVolleyball court. I also raised up a large piece of heavy plastic to serve asa shelter from the sun. Sunday morningjafter our men's meeting, I set up our .tent down by the creek to serve as a dressing room for those who were to bebaptized. With a few people that came :^rom a neighboring plantation, we numberedover 80, After a time of preaching on the ministry of John the 'Iramerser" andthe importance of Christian Baptism, we all walked slowly down the trail to thestream, singing, 'Hallelujah, Hallelujah', I waited in the water as one by^one-Jose, Ana, Terresa, Maria Jose, Delicia and Marildes each came to me to be joinedwith their Saviour in His Death and Resurrection. 'Oh Happy Day, Oh Happy Day,When Jesus Washed Sins Away'. And what a wonderful day it was for those six_new 'babes' in Christ and for all of us who again relived our own baptisms andreaffirmed our faith in Him,

Just a year and we'll be homo for a visit. We hope to arrive on Memorial' Day Weekend and spend our first Sunday at Jssaquah where we will be living during^bur seven month furlough.

While wo are busy here we are also looking to the future. Ti'jo possibilitieshave presented theiusolves for work in qur- second-^ra. Wo have been invited bynnollior wissioiiaiy couple, Bruce and.J.um3 Colson, to help open up a new work inCutaba, in the State of Mate Grosso (dense jungle). Wo plan to make a surveytrip to northern Mate Grosso in July, That is the jumping off place to theTransamazon and the possibilities are great for church planting in every direction out of Cuiaba. Before we received the invitation from Bruce end Juno wo hadbeen praying about the possibi];it,7 of going to Araguari, a small city close toUberlandia. There we would have the advantage of many contacts with relativesof Christians here in Uberlandia. Also our Christian films tfhich were televisedhere were also broadcasted in that city. We would continue to retain a relationship with the Christians here and become an out-reach of this group. The Scateshave also made it clear that they want us to stay and help here or in the vicinity. Pray with us that we will be sensitive to the Lord's leading.

    A NOTE FROM SANDYs

We are doing just fine but the children have been having fevers with theircolds, but Praise The Lord, they are bettor now. We're blaming this sickness onthe weather becaiTse it has been cooling off some it's probably down .in thelow 70'sj Mistio is still doing fine at school and last week her school gave alittle program honoring tho mothers - for one number they had Mistie sing,'Jesus Loves Me' in English - she loves performing!

    Love in Christ,

  • Bruce. June, Sandy and I had time to discuss our plans and feel now that Cuiabais_where we ought to be. VJe concluded that the next ten years wxll be criticalin*The evangelisation of the vast area North of Cuiaba and that the New TestamentChurch needs to get a strong foothold in an area that will soon spawn many largecities and perhaps new States, Bruce and I are planning an intensive suryey^^^^the road system out of Cuiaba after the rainy season next ye^rpprobably-just--before furlough time. We have discussed"the ide^of Sandy and the childrengoing to the States early and staying with her-folks during the month I wouldbe traveling in the interior, I would join her in Oregon the end of May andthen we would fly into Seattle together. Pray with us as we continue to seekthe Lord^s orientation for our future.

The new Christians are showing real spiritual growth. All are active in^ourmeetings and many are sharing their faith with others. The women's meetingshave been packed^ and the men are taking increased leadership responsibility.Jose was baptized at the chacara and recently took charge of leading the^Communion portion of our worship service. He is a natural teacher even if helacks formal education. He taught Ita and Thereza, as well as his wife Anna, how to read, when they were still living out on the farm. He shows real potential in the area of Christian Sducction but is not the 'forceful leader' type.Vie pray the Lord will help him to discover and use all the gifts God has givento him.

The day of the six baptisms at the chacara we had some visitors from a neighboring plantation. About two weeks later, Antonio, who was there with his wife,Lazara, showed up at our afternoon meeting. I made a visit on them afterwardsand found that he had been immersed but his wife was not a believer. I hadtalked to them both at the chacara and she had requested special prayer for hersmoking problem, I- That turned out to be the least of them. She is a very forceful person and has trouble respecting her husband's roll as leader in the home.He,.has not been able to maintain the best Christian example either. I beganregular Bible Studies with them some time ago and I am confident that Lazarawill soon come to Christ, I have seensome real hostility during the first ca

a real change in her since she was showing11s. The Holy Spirit is hard at work.

1"ha/ehad hopes"for two other couples we have, been getting to know. Eucleztnawas our maid during our first eight months in Brazil. VJe have continued ourfriendship with she and her husband, Cererino. He is a salesman for a manufacturer 0.L professional uniforms. VJhile visiting in their home one evening we metGeraldo and his wife, Cirlene, both of whom were-working with Ceverino. Onenight we had the two couples over for dinner and I was going to see if we couldn'tget a Bible Study started^ but the timing didn't seem right and I said nothing,(sometimes Our desire not to scare people'away, by moving too fast, can becomean excuse for our own lack of trust in the Holy Spirit's power to prepare hearts)Ve made several calls after that but Geraldo was traveling a lot and we couldnever find him at home. He had expressed interest in our Christian films and wasgoing to arrange to have them shown to all the workers at their factory.

Last Thursday, on 'Family Night', we decided to make it a family project to goand call on Geraldo and Girlene since their daughter, Neila, had missed threeweeks of Sandy's Sunday School. She had been coming regularly and bringing 5 or6 friends. They had not only moved, but we were shocked to find that Geraldohad died of double pneumonia, while on a sales trip to Rio, just two weeks before,VJe found out that Cirlene and Neila had moved to Girlene's parent's house, notfar from us, and we visited.her there. ' She was still in a daze from the loss ofher husband and we sought to conifort her. We pray that we can be used in thesituation to help accomplish God's will.

A couple of months ago we were invited to join a group of seven other couples, all of whom are Catholic, in bi-weekly meetings called the 'Christian FamilyMovement'. They knew we were Protestant Missionaries and wanted to learn more.'of our thinking. We too looked upon it as an opportunity to-learn more aboutCatholic- thinking as well as sharing our Bible-centered beliefs.

After several meetings in the homes of rthers, we had the opportunity to hostour own last week. The most promising thing that we had seen within the groupwas the desire to read the Bible and discuss it at eveiy meeting. I!feny werereading God's Word for the first time. Unfortunately, as was confirmed lastweek, most do not accept the Bible as much more than good philisophic literature.

  • I composed several discussion questions all dra\m from John l-lOj such as^How can we be authentic Christian in our society? Miat is a real Christian?and several other basic questions of Chriso.ian faith. The leader of thegroup 'blew mind' when he explained his 'Christian philosphy like thiss'Life is like a little bird flying in through a windowj taking a couple ofturns around the room and then back out again; not knowing where he came fromor where^he is going. That's Christianity? That's NothingismM Vie spentthe evening demonstrating the importance of God's revelation and the hope wecan find in God's plan. We are looking for fruit from these challengingmeetings.

Steve jyloreland should have our latest slide and movie programs, him for use of these materials.

    A NOTE FROi'I SANDT;

    Please contact

We continue to Praise The Lord for sending us to this beautiful country withits wonderful people. The children are speaking Portuguese like 'Magpies'and have become quite Brasilian, (Corey has even learned to fight with theneighbor girl in her ovm language). Histie is doing well at school and islearning how to read and write. Her teacher is a former nun and we werequite shocked when Mistie started repeating a prayer to Mary instead of herregular bedtime prayer vre immediately explained the importance of puttingJesus first. I have a Sunday School in ray home and have been averagingaround 20 students. These young people come from the upper lower class andI feel that it is a privilege to be planting seeks, I pray that these seedswill take root and grovr, Wej Elaine Scates and 1; have also started aWomen's Group and it is truely exciting to see the Lord working here,A major part of the meeting is sharing about prayers that have been answeredand blessings received. Our wonien believe in Answered Prayer and when they praythings happen!!

    Yours for Him.

It was beautiful as Harry and Ita (one of the men I baptized overa year ago) went into the water together to receive Alice and Divina as theycame in obedience to be joined with the Lord. However,it's the first time I've ever seen someone baptized.face down. Divina isscared to death of water and couldn't stand to be lowered baciward into thewatery grave. are showing- the entire iLiTe of Christ' series of nine films on thetelevision, every Saturday at about 12:30, V/o started in October andwill end up on Christmas Day with the Crucifixion and Resurrection ofChrist. The Federal censorships on most of the films will run out bythe first of the year so we thought it best to get them to the largetelevision audience once more. Our local network is just about all thereis for several good size cities. The cast--of television time is high,18,000 cruaeiros or a little over 1500" dollars. We pray that many willbe led to Christ through the powerful influence of the films. We are^vi^ng the cost between us with our mission paying $500*

Recently Sandy and I took the children to the city Of Ituiataba^ 9^j,000population) where we spent three days with a fast growing church. X-don.vtremember ever working so hard, I was preaching, leading Bible studies, talking on the radio and showing several films. There were morning, afternoon and evening meetings and when we weren't meeting or eating, we werevisiting. About 50 people made first time decisions for Christ in the meetings where I was participating. The radio l^oadcasts helped to draw attentionto our meetings and we averaged bGtwe^L.-3-or 5 hundred in the evening sessions. It was a real thrill to share again with that growing body of Christians.

-Our-annua^.rllssipn^ry Conference is set for Belem in January, The theme willinclude emphasis on Spiritism and also, to counter balance, we're going toemphasize prayer, Ben Alexander, former Medium, will be joining us^ from theStates. We will also have a Brazilian who is also an authority on this fastgrowing religious movoraent.

I have been researching a paper on the position of Roman Catholicism in regardsto Spiritism here in Brazil, I have Jjiterviewed a number_-of Catholic leaders, including the Bishop of this part of"bur State. I will share some of the conclusions of this research in a later letter,

ifey God bless and keep each one of you, making this a very meaningful. Spirit-filled birthday for our Lord, Jesus the Christ.

    A NOTE FROM SAITOXs

Here it is the Christmas Season and 'I'm so thankful that I'm God's child and Irejoice in the true meaning of Christmas and the Hope that it brings. It seems impossible that another year has flown by and before you know it we'llbe back in the States again. It'll be nice to see you all again, and 1 imaginethat we'll be quite snprjsod because of the changes. We do want to thank youall for your prayers that have lifted us up over these last 2 3/^ years.

This past year has been filled with )^les3ings and we'va been many friends, hereand there, drawing closer to our Savior. It thrills me to see how Jesus acceptsus all regardless of race or rank.

Wo were happy to witness the baptisms of two of our fine ladies. It alwaysgladdens the heart to see this act of obedience. Another one of our ladieshad a serious stroke but because of prayer she is recovering much faster thanthe doctors expected and we Praise The Lord for this.

May the Lord truly bless this Christmas Season and the events of the comingNew Year.
