in the Unit and/or District, demeanor at the bridge table, and courtesy and kindness to partners and opponents – all qualities which promote the goodwill of all bridge players and the enjoyment of the game. Larry and Ann are prime examples of all the above and we are proud to have them represent Unit 219.

TALLAHASSEE–LIFE MASTERS CELEBRATED The Tallahassee Duplicate Bridge Club

is proud to welcome three new Life Masters to its ranks – Cyndi Collins, Steve Ross, and Ann Canterbery.

The TDBC held a game in their honor with chilidogs for dinner, organized by Jill Meyers and crew. Congrats to these players and we look forward to seeing them at the tables for many years to come!

PENSACOLA SURPRISE We have special people in all of our clubs. You know the type…always doing something for someone else and of great help and encouragement to the new players. We have such a person at the Pensacola Bridge Center: Murray Hall. Murray is a Director (he directs two games, one of which he initiated to provide playing time for those folks with fewer than 500 points). Well, guess who

had a surprise party? Many of the 199er’s and the Sunday group got together and provided a wonderful surprise party in recognition of Murray’s kindness and effort on their behalf. The pictures tell the story. Congratulations!!!

Greetings fellow bridge players, How wonderful it is to feel the cool breezes of November. How blessed we are! Please remember to give thanks for the men and women fighting to protect our freedom, for family and friends, a place to live, food to eat and the ability to play bridge. This is also the time of year when we start to welcome back our snowbirds. So make sure you give them a warm welcome to our bridge tables. Let them know how much we value their return. Hopefully you have made your plans to attend our Orlando Regional, which is January 4-10, 2010. It promises to be great tournament and you won’t want to miss it. Come early and play on Monday afternoon at 1:00 and you’ll get a free play for Tuesday. We’re also giving away $2 coupons to be applied to hotel food. There will free celebrity speakers, registrations gifts, a hospitality room and you’ll even have a chance to win a three day/two night stay at a luxury LXR Resort and much more You can call 1-866-397-6516 to reserve your bridge rate room for $125 (single/double). The resort fee is waved for bridge players; after all we are there to play bridge. It is almost time to prepare the ballot for the next Unit Board election. If you are interested in seeing how our Unit is run and possibly serving on the board, please contact Pam Himes, our Elections Chair. Her phone number and email address are on page 50. Visit our website at www.acblunit240.com for the latest details on the Regional and other upcoming events. Have fun at the bridge table and may all your finesses work.

Instantly Play Better Bridge By Ron Andrews All right, I have your attention, even if you do not believe it is possible. I might be stretching the word instantly a bit, but I do think you can improve your results and your enjoyment very quickly. How? By finding your focus, especially your short term focus. Focus is about narrowing your attention. If you can tune out the non-bridge related activity and stay in the moment you will notice more, remember more, and have more time to make better decisions. I am not suggesting that you can or should concentrate on nothing but bridge from the moment you walk into the club. We should all enjoy the company of other members of the bridge community, but reserve a few minutes to go over your card to remind yourself of your partnership agreements. Welcome players to your table but then bring your attention back to the game. There will be moments during your bridge day where all your brainpower must be brought to the task; the problem is we do not always know which deals will require our greatest effort. Developing your ability to concentrate on each hand in turn, and within each hand to note and remember as much as possible, will prepare you for the hands that need utmost care. Pay attention during the auction; see each bid, if your mind wanders force it back on task. Do not forget to constantly re-consider your hand within the context of the auction so far. During the play, memorize the opening lead, take time to count losers & winners, and to develop a plan. These steps will help you concentrate on the things you need to notice during the play. As you “play your plan,” note the cards played. Are the distributions as you hoped? Keep track of the high cards. In order to count, you first have to notice. When the hand is over, good or bad, do what you need to do to put it behind you. It is now time to bring your focus of attention to the next board. Repeat this process. At the end of each hand, prepare yourself for the next deal. At the end of each round, prepare yourself for the next round. During the break, pay attention to your physical and social needs: relax, hit the restroom, breathe, socialize, eat, drink, and basically do anything but bridge. Then once again, as you return to the table, prepare yourself to focus on bridge. By the way, as a good partner, part of your job is to help partner concentrate. A little analysis between hands might help you each put a hand out of mind but too much will be distracting and take away time from the next hand. As dummy be quiet and efficient and avoid being a distraction. So instead of adding a new convention to your card, work on improving your ability to focus. As you make fewer mistakes and your results improve, so will your enjoyment of the game.

I hope everybody had a good summer and I want to welcome back our snowbirds. It is always good to have you back with us. It is that time of year again when we ask you to participate in our yearly election for officers for Unit 243. If you will notice, this issue has the ballots

for the Elections. Please read the biographies and vote for the candidate whom you feel will do the best job to promote bridge for Unit 243. The candidates that are running have indicated their willingness to serve as your representatives. These are non-paid positions, and involve hard work by all the members. Please vote for NO fewer than three (3) candidates and NO more than six (6). Please make sure to put your name and ACBL number on the envelope when you vote. IF your Name and ACBL number are not on it, YOUR VOTE WILL NOT BE COUNTED. There are ballot boxes located at each club. If you prefer, you can mail your ballot to the address listed on the ballot. Voting will start on November 1st and finish on November 27. Please vote, as it is your way to be heard! I am happy to announce that your board has just finished negotiating with the Hilton Hotel in Deerfield Beach, to hold our annual tournament there through 2013. So this way you will be able to make your plans for the next 4 years! Our next big event will be our Annual Silver Point Sectional held at the Skolnik Center in Pompano Beach, December 18-20. As usual we will have free food included in the price of the entry. This is always a great tournament and the last chance to get your Silver Points for the year. Please come out and support your Unit. By the time we have the tournament you will also have your new board of directors, so it should be a good time.

Look forward to seeing you there.

PRESENTING…YOUR UNIT 243 2009 BOARD MEMBER CANDIDATES

Barbara AugustThe reason for my running for the Board of Directors is that I am a people oriented person. I would be there to greet our guests with a smile, and see to it that they find their way and enjoy their experience of a large event. I will be glad to work in the hospitality area or on the hospitally desk.

Kay EgnerI have served as a board member of Unit 243 for six years. During this time, I have assisted at our tournaments and have been a goodwill ambassador promoting bridge at all levels. I was elected secretary by my fellow board members, functioning in that capacity for the past three years.

Charlotte Garfield I want to help Unit 243 continue its good work and try to help improve its functions, such as bigger and better

tournaments. To this I bring my experience from the Goodwill Committee when I first joined as a teacher and director in 1996. My managerial skills for running export business and dances plus multi-lingual skills should help to serve these goals.

Keith GellmanBeing on the board will allow me to share my love of our game with everyone and start giving back to this community. My play schedule is 10-12 times a week, in three local clubs, and all levels of tournaments. I will work hard getting out our Board of Directors information so we can encourage our new players to get into tournaments as soon as possible. I’m a Life Master, newly ACBL accredited teacher and a member of Unit 243 Goodwill Committee.

Philip HeasleyActive hard-working participant in all areas of board business; Chairman of STaC committee and member of the District 9 Flight C Grand National Team in the past.

Harvey Hoffenberg Since retiring from Real Estate business, Bridge has become my #1 passion. The ACBL’s community service and encouragement of newer players like myself fits in with my goals for the future. Making tournaments fun, accessible and affordable have kept me coming back.

Bella Ionis‑Sorren I love bridge at all levels and I am willing to help make sure our Unit Board has knowledgeable players. Vote for me and I will help make our local tournaments better run and player friendly. Bridge has made my life much more meaningful and I would like to share that with new players.

David LongUnit 243 is fortunate to have a very talented Board of Directors. I wish to join the

Board to add new perspective. I am a creative problem solver and think outside the box. I learned basic Goren bridge in 1954. After retiring in 2005, I studied modern bidding, joined ACBL and won the Ace of Clubs and Mini-McKenney three years in a row thanks to many excellent partners. I am presently a Bronze Life Master.

Margery Pecoraro I have lived in South Florida and played bridge here for 31 years. I became a certified ACBL director 30 years ago and have been directing many games in the area. I have been on the Board of Directors of Unit 243 for many years, co-chairing the tournaments and partnership desk. I am currently on the committee to negotiate a contract for our regional tournaments for the coming years.

Paula PolsynMy name is Paula Polsyn and I am a Bridge addict. I am passionate about the game

and will do all that I can to promote and preserve it. I have been living in Florida since 1971 although I didn’t start playing duplicate bridge until I retired in 1999. Of course, I got hooked and now I am running for the Unit Board in order to do my share to maintain, protect, and preserve this most wonderful game.

Bill RauldCurrent and past president of Unit 243 for four years; I have been involved in bridge in South Florida for 15 years. I am constantly trying to get new people involved in duplicate bridge. I would like to continue serving you as your representative on the board.

Jean SpectorI have been a current board member of Unit 243 for the last eight years, chairman of the prize committee and partnership desk. I am a very hard worker and would like contributing to the success of bridge in South Florida.

T.J. SingerI have been on the Board for 3 years and an active participant in board business including: actively maintaining the Unit 243 website, manning the partnership desk at our Unit-run tournaments and working on getting sponsors for our local tournaments. I am a bridge director and was Unit 243's Rookie of The Year in 2005.

Jim WalkerI have served for the past two years on your Unit 243 board of directors and have been a “main-stay” at the partnership desk at our unit tournaments. I would be pleased to continue serving for the next two year term.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Ms. Altus, I was thumbing through the pages of SUNSHINE BRIDGE NEWS when I came across the page with the photos of Bob Ferguson and his sister, Betty Johnson. I read (and re-read) the article with a great deal of interest because the Fergusons are near and dear to my heart. It was in the late '50s that I took bridge lessons from Marge Ferguson (Jim Ferguson's wife) and many a time Jim would amble into the room (we played in the Ferguson home) and share his expertise with us. Of course both Jim and Marge Ferguson were experts…not only in bridge but in sharing warmth and hospitality with others. It's true that at that time their children showed no interest at all in the game. I loved Marge Ferguson. I always said that when I grow up I want to be like her. After the completion of the lessons, I played weekly in their local game which attracted good players from as far as 30 miles away. And, the Fergusons encouraged me and my partner to attend the tournaments. And there you have another story of a person whose life changed because of the wonderful game of bridge. I have been living in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands for the past 35 years (yes, we do have a club here) and over the past years on occasion I returned to Western Pennsylvania to visit family. While there, I played in various bridge clubs with both Betty (just occasionally) and Bob (quite often). Bob, as you must know, is a quiet, unassuming man with a heart of gold. He would ever so diplomatically share pointers with me and I still think the world of him. Just as an aside, Jim and Marge Ferguson owned a pricey ice cream/candy shoppe and a visit to their store was reserved for special occasions. As far as I know, Bob still owns several candy shops that are extremely successful and famous in Western Pennsylvania. Thank you for writing that wonderful article about them. They are great people and I want the world to know it.

Sincerely,Justine Flashman

CONGRATULATIONS!

Penny Ericson won her first gold points, playing in her first knockout event, and winning her bracket, at the Naples Regional. Penny is from Sebring and so are her partner Diane Tocci Kelsey and teammate Caroline Duncan. Their fourth was Don Dvorak from Jacksonville.DISTRICT 9 POLLING QUESTION Thank you to those readers who participated in our survey about attending NABCs. Most of you who answered have attended many of these exciting tournaments. Some of the things you like best: the large games, the platinum points, seeing old friends, playing against the best players, the speakers, the great hotels in nice locations at discounted rates.***********************************Now, please go to our website, www.District9ACBL.org to respond to the new survey question(s):

This year, did any of your •local bridge clubs issue an official statement reminding players to stay home if you are experiencing any flu-like symptoms? In previous years, did any clubs •issue this same reminder?
